I know it was started with good intentions (and it sounds like the secret handshake thing is not going to move forward anway), but I just wanted to chime in. I am a *very* new member to DIS. VMK brought me here, and I had been very excited to find a board with adults who enjoy Disney and VMK like I do. But I felt really sad when I saw the posts yesterday. Because I knew I would be excluded based solely on my "newness." I know it takes time to develop relationships with people and just putting DIS in my sig isn't an automatic "in" to creating friendships. In real life and in the VMK world I am quiet--it takes me awhile to make connections. But that doesn't make me untrustworthy or a bad person. The way this thread was going I figured I might as well just stop coming to the DIS board if no one was going to trust me because I'm new (it's hard enough for me to connect with people as it is!). I feel better now though with the turn this thread took. I think it all got talked out and thought out. Thank you to the members who stood up for us newbies!
Unfortunately, there will never be a fullproof way to be safe from scammers; I wish there could be. This is just one way the real world and virtual world are the same--you have to be careful no matter who you are dealing with and like the others were saying, use common sense. If it doesn't feel right, don't do it.
I haven't yet traded anything (well, except with my mule). But that's mainly because I don't have anything extra to trade!
Eventually, I will have to jump into the trading arena and I admit, it's a little scary. But you know what? I will ask if there's anyone on this board who wants to trade first before asking the general VMK public. I hope that someone here will feel comfortable enough to trade with me.
Sorry about the novel I wrote...
