A neighbor shot and killed the pet black bear that fatally mauled a Monroe County woman who was trying to clean the animal's cage.
Scott Castone, who lives next to the victim, Kelly Ann Walz, said he heard a cry for help from some girls who were playing outside Sunday afternoon. He went out and shot the bear with a handgun.
"I did what anyone else would have done, said an emotional Castone, declining to give any more details.
Walz, 37, of the 7200 block of Dogwood Lane, Ross Township, was mauled to death about 5 p.m. by the 350-pound bear, according to state police at Lehighton.
Walz kept the bear inside a 15-by-15 foot steel and concrete cage near her residence, said Tim Conway, information education supervisor for the Pennsylvania Game Commission's Northeast region.
Conway said Walz threw a shovelful of dog food to one side of the cage to distract the bear while she cleaned the other side of the cage. At some point, he said, the bear turned on her and attacked.
Police are still at the Walz property as the investigation continues.
Conway said Walz's husband, Michael, is an exotic pet dealer and was operating with an expired license.
Conway said his license to keep and sell exotic animals expired in June of 2008, but he called the lapse a technicality.
Walz, who has been licensed since 1994, reported to authorities in 2007 that he kept a lion, cougar, jaguar, tiger, black bear, leopard and two servals on the the family's property in a rural area in the Pocono Mountains.
