My MIL has decided to come visit us this Thursday - for 17 DAYS!

And, we don't have a big home so there is nowhere for me to hide (1000 square feet for me, DW, DS12, DS6 and MIL).

Be afraid, be very afraid...

11 nights down, 6 nights to go.

At this point, pretty much everything she does is annoying...

We've made mention of the "stealth fart" technique for dealing with people who insist on sitting in the middle of the row in theaters at WDW, forcing you to step over them. I advocate this technique for annoying MILs as well. :lmao:

Yeah...I guess the Stealth method would work best for MIL's...as the stomping of toes might get the "spousal unit" a tad upset with you. :lmao:

Neighbor hears cries for help, shoots pet bear
By Robert H. Orenstein

Of The Morning Call

1:33 PM EDT, October 5, 2009

A neighbor shot and killed the pet black bear that fatally mauled a Monroe County woman who was trying to clean the animal's cage.

Scott Castone, who lives next to the victim, Kelly Ann Walz, said he heard a cry for help from some girls who were playing outside Sunday afternoon. He went out and shot the bear with a handgun.

"I did what anyone else would have done, said an emotional Castone, declining to give any more details.

Walz, 37, of the 7200 block of Dogwood Lane, Ross Township, was mauled to death about 5 p.m. by the 350-pound bear, according to state police at Lehighton.

Walz kept the bear inside a 15-by-15 foot steel and concrete cage near her residence, said Tim Conway, information education supervisor for the Pennsylvania Game Commission's Northeast region.

Conway said Walz threw a shovelful of dog food to one side of the cage to distract the bear while she cleaned the other side of the cage. At some point, he said, the bear turned on her and attacked.

Police are still at the Walz property as the investigation continues.

Conway said Walz's husband, Michael, is an exotic pet dealer and was operating with an expired license.

Conway said his license to keep and sell exotic animals expired in June of 2008, but he called the lapse a technicality.

Walz, who has been licensed since 1994, reported to authorities in 2007 that he kept a lion, cougar, jaguar, tiger, black bear, leopard and two servals on the the family's property in a rural area in the Pocono Mountains.

tis is my next door neighbor and friend, I held that bear cub in my lap and played with it when they first rescued it in 2000, and my grandson Tom use to work for them cleaning cages and feeding The animals. so what would be an appropriate thing to take up there, maybe help out. the article doesn't tell that Mike and Kelly have 2 kids. :confused3:confused3

Stories from the Corn 1.

Mr. Fender spends allot of money to have his cornfield planted/cut out into a maze. And people in general come to have a good time and do.

But then you have those who seem to think that the Maze is there for their own personal enjoyment and no one else matters. These people tend to be destructive and have a total disregard for rules.

I had a group of about 7 cut through the corn in site of the watch-tower...I see one come through and I yell "Please stay on the paths"...number 2 pops out "Please don't cut through the corn"...then 3, 4, 5 come on through....I make my way off the tower...ready to mark there bands...(which renders their bands null and void for any other farm activities.)

When I get there they act like they've done nothing wrong...and this hippy looking ladys is like "well now I don't know where to go now." I say "that tends to happen when you don't stay on the paths and cut through the corn."

See here is the thing...our maze is divided into Phase 1 and 2...phase 1 is simple...has 4 signs (of 10) for the Passports you use to help guide you through the maze...well they had just cut from phase 1 into phase 2...which really isn't that hard except that we have a fence between them!!! Mind you it's not barb wire or anything...just 2 pieces of orange ribbon-string. pretty clear that it means "Don't go through here!"

Then an older lady with the group says..."I need to get out...I need my insulin." I said "lady all you have done is put yourself further from the exit than where you were...I'll consider this a 'medical emergency'" I have her follow me out...and tell the rest of the group the direction to the next sign and tell them not to cut the corn anymore...and motion for Jared (another corn cop to follow them.) The lady and her husband were really nice...and apolgetic...she was just really wanting to get out before she got in a bad way...I get that...I tell her if she goes back in...just yell for help.

So I got back in the Exit and I meet up with Jared following the group (BTW Jared is about 17-18...very nice young man..good role model for my ds14 who also Corn Cops) He's said those people really bad mouthed me for a really long time...called me a horse rear. I'm like "really...a bunch of ignorant people come crashing from phase 1 into phase 2 and I say "no" and I'm the Horses Rear??? This is only the 3rd week of the season and it has to last another 4...Carol (owners name) has thousands of dollars invested in this field...and it's our job to make sure that idiots like them don't tear it up...if that make me a Horse Rear then so be it."

I said all that where they could hear me...they didn't make a peep the rest of the way.

Sorry...needed to vent.

Still baffles me how people can spend $10 each to do the maze...then not do the maze? :sad2:

Equally lost on what I'd do...Condolences and Prayers for Walz Family.

Obviously, the big picture here is that a family lost a wife and mother to a tragic accident. Unfortunately, its not out a far stretch of the imagination to assume that groups like PETA could start making noise about this. The article didn't paint the couple in the best light (expired license, etc). None of us (or them) know the family like you do. It's probably cliche, but I would bring over some kind of meal. Something like a casserole or lasagna that can be easily stored in the fridge and can be heated with little effort. It helps the family out in some very trying times and lets them know that you're thinking about them.

Grumpy John,

Every person is different, so it's hard to say what's best. But along with meals and practical needs, I'd say the best thing you can do is grieve with them. You don't even have to say anything...just show that you're taking it hard, too. And don't disappear after the first couple of weeks. Stick with them. I know they'll appreciate everything you do.

Prayers for the family...

Hey Nate,

http://www.fiferorchards.com/events/mazeinfo.php

Just did this maze with my son's kindergarten class last week. It wasn't much of a challenge, though--they gave us a map!

Even with that, I was in a group with 2 moms and they were amazed at how quickly we were moving through the maze. They kept saying they'd be lost on their own. Heard some of the other groups didn't even find all the stations inside! Sigh...:sad2:

I don't know what you can do except let you know you're thinking about them and care about them, and there if they need you. Bad, bad situation...prayers for the family:sad1::sad1:

Nate, Welcome to my world.......

Some people today never think they do anything wrong, and there seems to be a very big sense of entitlement amongs the population nowadays--heck, read some of the reports and reviews on these boards, you'd swear people expect the clouds to open up, the choir of Angels to start singing, and God himself to lay out the red carpet of Disney World to insure their vacation experience is "one for the record book"...after all, it's Disney right? A lot of people think Disney is the "Can't miss Magic Place". But this is the real world, everyone misses sometimes. I read it on these very boards just about every day "Disappointed in...." "Where's the pixie dust..." "Avoid XXX......"

Look at your average college football fan...screaming and cursing at a Freshman wide receiver who drops a tough pass in the rain, or cheering at a quarterback being knocked senseless and being taken out due to concussion---or that quarterback's own fans calling him a wimp, and slamming him on the call in show......Have people forgotten that's an 18 to 20 year old Kid out there???? NFL players are one thing, they get paid big bucks to perform...College players, regardless of how "great" their program is, or how much they get hyped, are still "kids" out there, playing a "game"...

In 2006 I hovered over an 18 year old who had just gotten shot through the neck by a sniper, who when captured admitted he was aiming at me (I looked like an intel officer)......He died, right there in front of me while I tried to help stop the bleeding---and the press has the nerve to criticize what these guys do on a regular basis...and my OWN FATHER has the nerve to call the military "heavy handed"...tell that to that kid's mom and dad. I met them...must gut wrenching experience of my life. I wonder if dad would've felt differently had it been me lying there...

Sorry, but some people think the world revolves around them. I will say this. In 18 years of law enforcement, I have people who still remember me, and hate me, for writing them a DUI or a speeding ticket---but people who I arrested for robbery who thanked me later because it straightened their life out.

The Difference? The speeders didn't believe they did anything wrong. The others knew it, and they could get over it..:confused3

thanks for the advice, we took up a few things from the kitchen, (couple of roast chickens and some salads, other things.) and it was much appreciated.
your right about the way they present the whole thing, Mike is educator, going to local schools and youth organizations to teach about animal husbandry, and wild life conservation. Kelly was an outstanding mother,a good teacher, and cared for all the animals. the bear in question was a rescued cub at 6 or 8 weeks old it's mother was a road kill. if Mike and Kelly had not kept it it would have been destroyed.

Wow, what a rant....sorry guys, the deployment must be getting to me???:confused3:confused3:lmao::lmao:

thanks for the input and rent away bro. you are on the money about peoples thinking. I've been called "baby killer" a few times when I still wore my navy blues. got to wonder :confused3:confused3
