They allowed the choice of dessert or apps. What do you think the reasoning behind not giving us a choice. there is really no cost issue. last year on the plan we didn't use a app and a dessert each night. it would be nice if i could order the app and the wife gets the dessert and we split it up. This is the way it should be!!!! Who wants 4 apps on the table like the old plan was. it was a waste of food and space. As for the tip....whats an extra 15- 20 bucks for a great meal and great service.

The extra 15 to 20 a meal is alot when you have a 17,000 paycut in your future!

I do agree about the choice thing though!

i agree with ya, but it's like everything else in life in my book. if the government cant control the gas prices, i will still pay what i have to pay per gallon but i might not spend that money at mcdonalds or starbucks. if disney wants me to tip my servers, i will but instead of buying that last unneeded round of drinks at dinner or ice cream on the way out of the park, i will tip the server instead.

imo some of the reasoning for not offering either/or is revenue...

if a guest comes into a restaurant hungry, w/his eyes bigger than his stomach, he will likely order the appy out of pocket... then when the dessert comes and his top button is undone, if dessert were oop, he would skip it... that translates into selling more food... ergo, more revenue...

Actually, there is a cost issue. Desserts are generally more cost-effective (i.e. less expensive to make and keep) than appetizers - which, unlike a slice of Chocolate Whiskey Cake, usually can't be made in advance, or made in bulk.

In addition, not allowing a choice of courses cuts down on the amount of time the Guest spends in the restaurant and thus allows a greater table availability (giving more Guests the opportunity to dine).

And, NOT that this affected Disney's decision but, offering a choice of courses somewhat discriminates against solo diners. A couple, family, or group can order some apps and some desserts, and share. The solo diner would not have that option.

And finally - actually, we DO have a choice. Disney WILL allow Dining Plan Guests to order an appetizer AS their entree. A value for the Guest? Absolutely not - but if you've got your heart set on a particular appetizer, well... Wait, we have another option. We can PURCHASE one or more appetizers.

I think ......
1.cost - desserts usually are cheaper as they don't have any meat in them
2.time - it takes longer for a kitchen/cooks to cook or prep an app compared to a dessert. So, you can get people out a little quicker if they do not order app.

i think you might have hit it....it might not be a cost issue but a time issue, with the dining plan its a 4 cousre meal, cut the apps out and you are moving people out 25 min. quicker and maybe getting 2 more ressies a day at that table. thats huge money for disney and the servers!!!

The way I see it, people are more likely to skip dessert (especially when the CS, TS, and snack option all allow dessert) than to skip an appetizer. I think it's purely a cost saver for Disney. That extra 15-20 buck tip is a 15-20 buck increase in price of the DDP.
