When I was in college, I was on the debate team. Now mind you, we were the first group to ever debate so we were not the best in the world. Anyway, our topic that year was illegal immigration. I had a proposal to stop immigration called "The Great Wall of Corn" which was kind of like the Great Wall of China except it ran across the US - Mexico border and was, well, made of corn. I figured we could help the farmers in both Mexico and the US by buying their corn, help the economy by building this big ol' wall, and stop illegal immigration in one fell swoop. :dance3: Why that idea never took off, I wll never know!:sad1:

Interesting piece here about poll numbers as we see Obama nudged up a point or two. McCain is gaining in every electorate group, and Obama is losing, yet the polls have Obama up a point or two. Why? Well, because the pollsters — in this case, the Gallup Poll, has changed its weighting for parties, and are heavily over-sampling democrats, even though Republican favorability has risen to the point that 50% of voters have a favorable view of the Republican Party in a new Pew poll http://people-press.org/report/?pageid=1377

So, the piece I mention looks at all the Gallup poll and changes the party identification samples to something closer to averages over the past 10 years. Look what it shows:

The actual published polls, with heavier party weighting to democrats:

Aug 21: Obama 45, McCain 44
Aug 28: Obama 48, McCain 41
Sep 04: Obama 49, McCain 42
Sep 11: McCain 48, Obama 44
Sep 18: Obama 48, McCain 44

The same polls, re-weighted for where party identification actually is:

August 21: Obama 39.94%, McCain 43.43%, Undecided 16.63%
August 28: Obama 40.04%, McCain 43.60%, Undecided 16.36%
September 4: Obama 41.06%, McCain 41.77%, Undecided 17.17%
September 11: Obama 42.04%, McCain 42.45%, Undecided 15.51%
September 18: Obama 39.62%, McCain 45.71%, Undecided 14.67%

Obama loses in every single poll — badly — including the most recent one (Sept. 18) which shows that with more historically realistic party sampling, the current Gallup Poll would be McCain UP by 6 points. Even if the Republican sample were nudged down a little, McCain would still be up. I'm suspicious enough to suggest that as McCain began to climb in the polls, the pollsters reconfigured the party identifications in their sample to benefit Obama.

Here's a quote from the analysis:

"So, put it all together, and in the past week Obama has stayed steady or lost support in every party identification group, yet Gallup says his overall support went up four points. And McCain stayed steady or went up in every party identification group, yet we are supposed to accept the claim that his overall support went down by four points? Anyone have an answer for how that is even possible?

Well, actually I do. There is one, and only one, possible way that such a thing can happen mathematically. And that way, is that Gallup made major changes to the political affiliation weighting from the last week to now. Gallup has significantly increased the proportional weight of Democrat response and reduced the weight of Republican response. Bear in mind that this assumes that people change the foundation of their political opinion like a showgirl changes costumes, which has no scientific basis or historical support whatsoever."

I think we're going to have another election in November where lefty elitist columnists on the East Coast will be writing column after column saying, "I just don't get it. I don't know anyone who voted for McCain. All the polls said Obama would win. What happened?"

I'm gonna have to mail a couple of 'em a big box of tissues. :rotfl:

Thanks for this AND the link, a VERY interesting Read!

Am I wrong to find such amusement in taking a teacher down a notch or two when they profess to be such a great human, but can't get a single thought out without the most horrific of grammar? They're just such an easy target...but since I have no degree, apparently my views are "dismissable":lmao:

Anyone care to laugh with me at them on the Joe Biden patriotic thread? :rotfl2:
That thread really bothers me. I'm the poster who talked about her husband's practice and how we can't get paid this month. That Twilight teacher lady is insane and is no way a teacher.
yeah I have been laughing at her for awhile but now she's made it personal by attacking my husband. Gloves are off. :) I'll probably rack up a few points for the posts I made there, but lets just say that she's damned lucky (and I don't curse) that she's not within reaching distance. This is one pregnant lady that would have to respectfully beat the stupidity out of her...then I'd force her to read the constitution.:)
I haven't read the thread today, so I didn't see that yet, but I'll go grab my bat if you'd like. :)

Oh, and today I went grocery shopping and Sarah Palin was there. I saw her licking the donuts and putting them back in the fridge AND she didn't put her cart back in the cart corral when done shopping. Disgraceful.

(My 9 year old son is hilarious. He woke up late today and he told me that it was Sarah Palin's fault. He's been hearing his momma talk too much. He's really offended by all of the Sarah Palin hype he hears).

Yes, but your response totally, totally, totally made my day. It was perfect:worship:

Thanks. I read that all day on my phone while I was working. Just couldn't hold it in anymore. Some folks just don't know when to quit...:sad2:

last night on the news much to Hillary's chagrin the polls show that NY may be a red state;)

can someone explain to me why people think obama is the better choice if the economy is in the toilet?

That was the explanation i heard for obama going up in the polls this week....

That Twilight is the one who started the abortion thread and had some controversial remarks. :confused3 Is it a full moon?

I also saw Sarah at the mall. She's really getting around today! She was buying slutty short skirts, trampy shoes, cheap make-up, and fake Coach handbags. She's some piece of work!

;)

The immigration problem is one of my personal 'top' issues.

When I lived in Vegas, I had an admin job where I would check I-9s and Green Cards.I also did the books for a friend of mine here, once in a while, who has a construction business.
I would see copies of the green cards and they would make me  . The front of the card would say ex.: Jose Rodriguez, and the back would say Maria Gonzalez. :confused3 They also would get drivers licenses from the more lenient states. One tried to get his license renewed here and they arrested him because of his phony DL. They can come here and pay around $800 to get a 'real' green card. I have so many stories I can write a book.

What aggravates me the most is that someone has to pay for them to be here. They utilize ERs for every little scrape because they have no health care, and guess who gets to foot the bill? I have no problem with anyone coming here the legal way. Go through the proper channels, do what your supposed to do, and learn some English while you're at it. :confused3

Hey - my family did it. There are no excuses for illegal immigration in my book.
:worship:

My brother-in-law is an immigrant. Native born Thai. He came to this country on a student visa well over 15 years ago. He worked his way through school, worked his way through life, learned English fluently (he actually learned it in Thailand before he came here). Then he met my sister and found love. Marrying an American fast-tracked his citizenship a couple years, but at the time they were busy having children and building a family anyway.

Two years ago I was there when he was sworn in as a citizen of this country. I took the picture of him with his beautiful boys and proudly holding up his citizenship certificate. It was a great day for all my family.

So I have to wonder, if my BIL could come here on his own, work and contribute to the system (never taking any benefits but paying into them), then why should we give those sneaking across the border a free pass?

I realize we have lots of people banging at our door to get in. The rules regarding visas are complex and can get tough. But why not make those 10-15 million people apply for it like everyone else? It's not fair to the immigrants who come into this country legally.
And I commend people like that. Dh has an uncle who immigrated from Peru. He speaks excellent English and has his master's degree now.

Oh, and today I went grocery shopping and Sarah Palin was there. I saw her licking the donuts and putting them back in the fridge AND she didn't put her cart back in the cart corral when done shopping. Disgraceful.

Now manahmanah has seen her at the mall.
I saw her at the Humane Society buying animals for her dinner. When I called her on it she threw her attack kittens at me.

Actually, when the economy becomes poor, voters typically flock to the democrat party because of its history of creating social programs that hand out cash, but this year, the dem candidate is such a lightweight, that this historical advantage is not panning out. Seems even the dems are saying to themselves, "Uh, yeah, he seems really swell, but if we're talking about my job and my money, I'm gonna have to go with the grown up. Sorry…"

Oooh, devolving into calling Sarah Palin a *****? I just love me those warm and fuzzy feminist democrats. I suppose if she were black you'd be calling her a…well, we know what you'd be calling her if she were black, cuz that's how hate-mongers roll.

But, please, keep talkin'. Don't. Ever. Stop. In fact, ratchet it up a little bit.

thanks for the link...

it's actually a popular myth that FDR saved the country from the depression...
what saved the country from the depression was WW2....
that's not a secret - anyone who takes macroeconomics in university learns that (and anyone with half a brain can figure it out on their own)...

and for a more recent example of democrats in a bad economy -- take michigan as an example...the democratic govenor hasn't done a whole lot of good for that state (which is now economically so badly off, it's #50 out of 50 - mighty sad)...

Mickeysgal, the stamps/Mr. Magoo thread was just MossMan being a goofball. It didn't make sense because it wasn't supposed to. ;)

That thread really bothers me. I'm the poster who talked about her husband's practice and how we can't get paid this month.

Your husband sounds like an amazing and wonderful person. I know you are very proud of him, and I'm sorry that some people have messed up perceptions, both IRL and on a message board.

Well I'm not one to gossip, but............

I did see with those 'crab fisherman' with her. Her DH was no where in sight. :sad2: She was being very flirty, if ya know what I mean ;) . Then one of those fisherman reached around and pinched her butt!! She obviously loved it. What a tramp.

ETA- It's all true. I took a pic of it with my camera phone, but I sold it to Us Weekly therefore I can't post it here.

Its true... she WAS supposed to bring the juice for hockey and she left it in her car. She sent her kid to go get it! She couldn't even get it herself! I mean, how lazy can you be... talking on the phone about government stuff and then go FORGET THE DARN JUICE? LOL

Actually, this is good news for us. We DON"T want to debunk this.

If McCain had chosen a "ho-hum" VP choice, someone that was expected, someone who didn't fire up the base as much, it would be game over. However, with a fired up base, it becomes a challenge. Which means more Republicans coming out in November to vote.

Just my thoughts.
