The Broadway show thread where we discuss all things Broadway

Has anyone seen Million Dollar Quartet?
DH is a huge rock and roll oldies fan, and DD actually read about this famous night in her popular music class last year.

It is about the night Elvis Pressley, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis got together at Sun Record Studios in Memphis.

We saw this and really enjoyed it (my husb even moreso than me). Wish there was more going on but it's based on real life so yeah. Loved the concerty bit at the end!

Jeckyl and Hyde has changed a lot since the concept album and each time it has been on Broadway. We saw the tour last week and it was ok, but Constantine did not have a powerful voice and he couldn't sing the song Confrontation in both voices, they had to record the Hyde portion and show it on the screen. We didn't really care for it, although the other actors were good and the costumes were excellent.

O. M. Gosh!!

We just saw Book of Mormon on tour, in Des Moines!

It was hilarious! :rotfl: :rotfl:

But definitely not for the easily offended.

I was a bit surprised that no one walked out during the show. We had been to a showing of "La Cage Aux Folles" last year at the same theater, and had to listen to some idiots behind us who complained the entire time - "Is that a GUY? You wouldn't catch me dead in that! I don't think this is funny at all!". Finally, they left.

But I think people knew enough about this show that they knew it was going to be offensive - after all, this IS the South Park guys! And I think the audience mostly knew what to expect.

It was the only time we've been to a matinee that wasn't crawling with little kids! Our "kids" were probably among the youngest folks there - and, at 17 and 21, I figured they were old enough to watch this. After all, they have all heard the words, especially since they watch South Park all the time!:rolleyes1 They had also seen Avenue Q, by Robert Lopez, who also worked with Trey Parker and Matt Stone on BOM, a few years ago and thought it was great!

We were really lucky to be able to see this - Des Moines is only the 6th city on their tour! :hyper:

:rotfl: How do you go to a show like La Cage and not know what you're going to see? :lmao: :lmao:

We just got tickets for the Jekyl and Hyde revival and the Pippin revival. So excited.

We finally got our renewal offer for next wear which Includes Book of Mormon! YAY!!! Man our prices went up due to it (and Once)... but it will be worth it!

I can't wait to see Book of Mormon, two weeks from tomorrow!!!
Still waiting for them to release our new season, I am hoping for Once.

On a personal note, just a litte sharing, my dd just got the part of Lucy in You're a Good Man Charlie Brown at our high school. She's very excited!

I would have loved to have heard their reactions if they had tried to see Priscilla Queen of the Desert!!

Congrats to her!!!

Weird thing is our renewal notice lists 6 named shows with 2 more "to be announced later"

Ours last year, had 6 shows as the package, and then added several "season specials", so that made the advertise price of packages a bit shady. It cost me more to add the specials than for the other 6 shows total.

Congrats to "Lucy".

How do you all handle people who talk during a performance?

Last night we saw Tony Bennett in concert. His daughter Antonia opens for him. People behind us didn't like her performance and were talking about her during the songs. My asking them to be quiet was not effective.

Ours did that last year too and yeah cost me more to add the specials too (but I got excellent seats for those). I didn't mine too much bcz Wicked was a special and I didn't want to see it again. I think it was a combo of shows added too late, added in the off-season, and ones that had come through before that they didn't want to make ppl see if they'd already seen.

It's just weird we get 2 more we don't know about yet

You could get an usher?

Just got tickets for Book Of Mormon and Motown on Broadway. We're going Memorial Weekend. Love going to shows. Go here in Philly all the time.

Hey everybody! Long time member, and starter of this thread, returning to the Dis! WOW! I'm surprised this thread is still going. I never imganed a thread I started would still be going after all this time.

Not sure if this has been posted yet, yes, I'm being bad and not checking, but I'm kind of sad to hear that Mary Poppins is closing. My mother-in-law got tickets for me and the wife to see here in Boston a few years ago, and I loved it! Well, it's good to see this thread still going. I hope to start contributing again on a regular basis.

And THANKS, CCT, for starting a great thread!!

Congrats to "Lucy"! I love Charlie Brown - a great show!
Our DS is in rehearsals now for his high school production of "Grease" - he plays Johnny Casino, who sings the Hand Jive song.

You know, it just seems to me that the level of etiquette at shows has bottomed out. It is as if people don't know how to behave in a civil manner in public anymore. We've noticed just general bad behavior at lots of live shows (people talking, farting, eating, blatantly ignoring the "no photography" rules, cell phones going off and even worse, people actually ANSWERING them, etc.). It's amazing - and kind of sad. :sad2:

It is amazing, and it makes me crazy! People are always getting up and walking out in the middle of a song, wearing hoodies and trucker hats, etc. Makes me nuts!!!!!!!!!

Book of Mormon is by far the best show I've ever seen live. It was just spectacular... And other than the two older gentlemen in front of me that found it necessary to repeat funny lines after the actors said them, it went off without a hitch. I didn't notice anyone leave.

That being said... I saw spring awakening 8 times on broadway... And except for closing night... No on ever got up and left.

It seems like bad etiquette is rampant at live shows and that is just sad. These people worked so hard to do what they're dining and it is just disrespectful.

We are going tomorrow!! Can't wait. My 14 yo is not happy she doesn't get to go too. She could probably handle it but DD12 definitely not. Doesn't help that one of DD14's best friend does get to go. It's a tough call for that age.

Yeah, I think I would not take a 12 year old to this show.

We took our DS to see Avenue Q when he was 15, and in retrospect, I think he was a bit young for some of the rauchiness.

And off topic, although I love the shows they have at the Civic Center, I HATE the way the rows are configured. Not having a center aisle and needing to climb over people to get to your seat (or having others climb over you) really drives me crazy.

It totally depends on the kid. If your child watches any amount of network or cable TV, then I would say Avenue Q is okay for a seven or eight year old.
