The Broadway show thread where we discuss all things Broadway

Excited to hit NYC this summer! Seeing Cabaret too. So If/Then tickets are available at TKTS already? I guess I was always under the impression that the newer shows weren't always available there. That's good to know!!

If you have an iphone, there is a TKTS app. I don't know if it's available for other phones. It's a very good app with lot's of info. I follow along to see what shows are "on the board". :)

Also, the prices of tickets vary. Many, many, many years ago, I would get everything for 50% off. Now, they range between 20-50% off.

Hedwig & The Angry Inch is NOT appropriate for a 9 year old. The entire show is about sexual liberation...

That said, it was AMAZING!!!! I've never seen a show where BOTH lead actors were so flawless in their singing! Neil & Lena are both amazing and deserving of the upcoming Tony nominations in my opinion.

My 14 year old saw it and she said it was a bit raunchy but an awesome show- Neil Patrick Harris was amazing in it though.

And because tickets for orchestra seats can run up $150 or so, even half-price tickets are still expensive. I got tickets to Pippin for 50% off at TKTS a few weeks ago, and they were still $80.

The show was totally worth it...but yikes, I remember when I used to get tickets for under $30 there.

We usually get a group rate when we go because we buy so many tickets that we don't pay more then 40.00 a show-which is how we can afford to go to so many-certain ones like Lion King we wanted great seats for and paid full price and Les Mis we got front row so we paid full price but that is it-all the rest much cheaper!

Thanks for the tip. I will get that app pronto. I am looking at Hedwig for sure but tickets are not cheap! I think it may only get worse if NPH wins though. Think I will book that one sooner than later!

You definitely won't find Hedwig at TKTS, so you should get tickets to that one as soon as you can.

I'm guessing it's for the aids charities Broadway Cares? It's done once or twice a year at theater productions around the country. I got a signed playbill from the cast of rent by making a donation several years ago.

Broadway Cares Equity Fights Aids does fundraising in both the Spring and Fall, twice a year both tours and Broadway shows do it. I was at a benefit last spring through the Wicked cast and $900 and $1000 donation bought 3 people a backstage tour plus watching Elphaba get painted green. I was going to do a backstage tour ($75 donation) or bubble ride ($300) for my bday and wound up being invited backstage by a cast member anyways.

Some one mentioned meeting/talking to the cast, ask where the stage door is located at the theater, you can meet and get autographs free of charge. They always come out and stop to talk, take pictures etc.

I returned to Oz aka Wicked for my 33, 34 and 35th time this past weekend and caught the new Elphaba, who's also the youngest English speaking Elphaba, in only her second week. She's got such an amazing voice, I was blown away by her. She was also in the touring production of Next to Normal with Alice Ripley and she was 19 back then. But am saying if Wicked comes near you and it's Emma Hunton/Gina Beck as the witches, you will be in for a treat. The standby, Emmy Raver-Lampman, was equally amazing as Elphaba.

Durham added Wicked onto the list of shows coming to DPAC...this coming year is going to be amazing!! I also heard who will be playing Pippin in Pippin on tour, so excited to see that show next spring!!

Trying to decide which shows to see on our upcoming theatre run to NYC. My DD (18) just came back and said, All the Way was a most see. Of Mice and Men was good but not spectacular, Sea Marks was good acting but some of the book was weak, and Chicago was good but I have seen Chicago many times as has she but it is one of her all time favs. So far we have All the Way, Macbeth (Branagh) and Alvin Ailey. We have room for two more shows (we are only there for 4 days). Thinking of Hedwig for our musical or maybe Violet but are open to suggestions. Would like one more play, any ideas? We are two middle ages women, no kids with us, so anything goes.

Thanks

I saw that Next to Normal tour. I'm assuming she was Natalie (no other female rolls ;) ). She was very talented!

I saw Once for the second time last week. I saw it back when it first opened, and loved it, and it was just as good the second time. It's just such a beautiful show. We got there early enough to go up on the stage before the show, where there's an open bar and the band is playing. It was so much fun!

I also saw All The Way, which was fantastic! I'm a big Breaking Bad fan, so of course I wanted to see Bryan Cranston, but the whole cast is pretty spectacular. If you are any fan of history, you need to see this show. And Bryan Cranston was amazing, I hope he wins the Tony this year.

And I'm so excited Hugh Jackman is coming back to Broadway this fall! Love him! I went to an early screening of the new X-Men movie this weekend (which was awesome), and Hugh, James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender made a surprise appearance at the theater to say hello. It was so cool! :cool1:

I still need to see the new Les Miz, and I really want to see Phantom again. I love Norm Lewis, and Sierra Boggess is supposed to be an amazing Christine.

I just peeked into this thread when I saw you posted last. I was wondering if you had seen Les Mis yet and what you thought.

I was about to press the trigger on second row seats, right on the center aisle, for one of the premiere shows, right before they opened. They were less money than the "premium seats" which start just one row back for the next (about) 20 rows. Then I got distracted and didn't get back to the website. :headache:

Now with the show nominated for 3 Tonys and summer coming, I bet all the best seats are gone. I really want to see the original, first cast before they start leaving. :(

It's on TKTS most nights, and Hedwig is easily going to win the Best Revival Tony, so there are plenty of seats. It's doing great, but it's not all sold out.

Any suggestions for a show/shows to see over Labor Day weekend? We're going to be in town to celebrate my 30th so I'm fairly certain my boyfriend will let me pick but I'm not sure what to go with. We just saw Aladdin and A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder last trip and we saw If/Then during its Washington DC run. My boyfriend was suggesting we see Aladdin again since we both really liked it (James Monroe Iglehart was amazing) and maybe they'll have something like a tour going on with Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids (does anyone know if that's at all likely given the timing). I had sort of wanted to do something different but I'm having trouble coming up with something and I don't really want to choose something different for the sake of being different.

Thanks Jen! That is GREAT info to know. :woohoo:

Any reviews of Beautiful from you Dissers? I bought the Cast Recording and it sounds great. Going this August. Chaperoning daughter's theatre group but just found out that I will have some free time to myself so am drooling over the options!!! We are already seeing Aladdin, Cabaret and Hedwig. Will hopefully see If/Then. Wondering about Violet too? :)

I have a friend who saw Beautiful. She LOVED it! :)

We'd like to see Newsies in Chicago in December; currently tickets are only available to season subscribers and groups of ten or more. I wondered if there might happen to be any Chicago theater goers that know from past years approximately when single tickets might go on sale?

So I managed to get three consecutive days off from work next week so I'm heading to NYC (Monday-Wednesday - not easy when you work at a newspaper.... but not for much longer - this has turned into a celebration trip as I just accepted a new position at a nonprofit, so I am putting in my two weeks notice tomorrow!) and planning on seeing a few shows!

I'm going to try for Newsies on Monday (which I still haven't seen... but apparently the rush tickets are very easy to get), Phantom of the Opera on Tuesday (saw it back when I was in high school, but I want to see Norm Lewis and Sierra Boggess as the Phantom and Christine) and then hopefully Kinky Boots on Wednesday. If I can't get a ticket to Kinky Boots, I'll try for Matilda, Violet or If/Then, I think.

Newsies was at TKTS yesterday for 50% off, that was a Tuesday night show, not sure about next week though (holiday)
