The Broadway show thread where we discuss all things Broadway

I need some recommendations. Dh wants to take some foreign visitors to see a show. This will most likely be in Aug. Also price will be a factor to consider.

The show shouldnt be offensive in either language, dress etc. I dont know if some of the show would get lost in translation so to speak, so I am thinking more on the lines of a musical.

I am clueless. I looked at Broadway box just to see the shows and I am thinking Lion King, but would that be too kidish for the adults? All attending would be adults, Phantom of the Opera?

Any ideas?

The Lion King isn't too childish for adults. It's a good show for all ages.

Phantom is also a good choice, and almost always has discount tickets available. Lion King never does.

Hi! Anyone have any thoughts on the box seats for Aladdin?

Are you referring to those elevated seating areas on the sides of the stage? If so, they rarely offer a complete view. Part of the stage is obstructed. Those boxes were built back the in days when certain people went to the theatre to be seen, not necessarily to see.

The World Cup delayed me from posting this, but we saw Aladdin on Wednesday night and absolutely loved it. The costumes and set design were incredible and the way they made the magic carpet work was amazing. The genie definitely deserved the accolades he's received. And I love the New Amsterdam theater. It's the third show we've seen there. Not a bad seat in the house. We were row N, dead center.

FYI, Newsies is closing the end of August. It was only suppose to run for 100 shows. It ran over 1000 shows. :thumbsup2

I saw "Violet" with Sutton Foster on Saturday and it was wonderful. The cast was small but powerful and I really loved the score. It's a shame it's such a limited run but I am so glad I got to see it. My mother and I decided to go into NYC on a whim on Friday morning and so we took the bus in super early on Saturday, played tourist and went to the Empire State Building, had lunch, saw the show, got some cookies at our favorite bakery and took the bus back home.

I also auditioned for a local production of Les Misérables tonight. I would be thrilled to be cast in the ensemble, but I sang "On My Own" even though I am probably a tad old for Eponine (I am 25 but often get mistaken for being in high school even when I have full make up and professional clothes on...) but it's easier to sing that than to pick out a harmony in a choral song. I did theater all through elementary, middle and high school (and have done several shows with this particular company as well) but pretty much gave up performing, went away to school and majored in journalism and then moved back home where I got a job at a local newspaper, so I worked nights and weekends for the past three years and I just took a job doing marketing and administrative work for a nonprofit, so I am no longer working nights and weekends and have some time on my hands to do theater again.

Just found this out tuesday morning. Of course monday on a whim I bought (full price) Lion King tix for september. Once I found out this news I HAD to buy tix (discounted at least!). Funny, I grew up here but for the first 37 years of my life I had only seen 2 broadway shows! Now this year I am on track for 6 maybe 7! I have seen Phantom twice this year and would go again if I could!

We did see Aladdin in March. It was very good. We saw the Les Mis revical (Ramin Karimloo!!). It was great! Going to Wicked in september (that one i saw once before when my sister had won tix).

We are off on Saturday for our first trip to NYC, seeing Hedwig and the Cripple of Inishmaan! So very excited!!!

I saw Cinderella last October in NYC with the original cast.....AMAZING show! The audience was pretty much mothers and daughters who knew all the songs! Everyone was so in sync with the whole production! Just got tickets for the National Tour here in Miami in November. I understand the girl playing Cinderella on Broadway now has been chosen for the tour. Is this true and any word on the casting of the prince? Thanks!

Best wishes - "break a leg!"

We just saw our local theater's production of Les Mis. Fantastic!

I am so glad MTI (Musical Theater International) finally released the rights to this for regional theaters last year. (The school version has been out for quite a while, but was limted to actors 18 and younger).

Hopefully, more people will be able to see this amazing show!

I am taking my autistic 9 year old son to see Cinderella next week with my adult son and daughter. Many things frighten my son and I thought Lion King and Aladdin might be too much for him. He can be very nervous about animals but Cinderella only has a horse right? I don't think he has much of a concept of it being a show geared for girls more. I'm hoping it will be something we can all enjoy. My daughter recently saw Matilda when she was studying abroad in London and really enjoyed that. Her flat was around the block for the Cambridge Theater so that was nice too!!

My daughter is doing a local production of Les Mis again, she just did it in a different theatre in Nov. She is a prostitute again in this one but she is also a factory worker (the one that sings (take a look at his trousers.......), a drink with me girl, a turning girl and a wedding dancer. She is loving it with all the costume changes! She says she has 3 minutes to change from factory worker to a prostitute.
So did you get in??

Does anyone have any recomendations for a dinner near the Belasco or lunch near the Cort? Nothing fancy, just basic simple food?

Thanks!

Saw Pippin last week. Got half price tickets from the TKTS booth. My college's Fine Arts department performed it way back around 1979, but I remembered nothing about it.

There were some great illusions, magic tricks, and acrobatics. Singing and dancing were top notch. I didn't particularly care for the plot, however. Still, it was well worth seeing it.

John's is our go-to place in that area. Nothing fancy, just good pizza and Italian food. Its on 44th, across the street from Phantom. It's about a block west from Hedwig, which is located E-Broad. (you'll get that reference when you see the show :rotfl: )

Nope. 140 people showed up to audition and they only cast 40. Big waste of my time, IMHO, because if I knew going into it that they were only casting 40 people I would have known to not even bother auditioning.

Hi Guys! I am heading to NYC for the first time this weekend and have three shows planned for myself, DH, DD23, and DS19. (Rock of Ages, Wicked and Book of Mormon). We are so excited! We might pick up one more if we can grab a deal at the last minute. Anyway, my question is about dress code. I am reading that pretty much anything goes. Is this true? DS will be thrilled but I was hoping to get everyone looking nice each night! One website even said shorts and flip flops are acceptable- really? My kids will be furious if I make them pack dress clothes and everyone in the theater is in shorts and flip flops! Any advice?

We go to Broadway shows all the time and it really is anything goes- we usually go in jeans. Some people dress up but that is usually the people going to a nice restaurant before or after the show. For a Friday night Phantom show I was next to a guy in sweats.

Pretty much anything goes for dress code these days. Yes, during the summer you'll see people in shorts, T-shirts, and flip flops. But not everyone will be dressed that way. The theme park look is NOT the norm. The bulk of the audience seems to be casual, but neat. Dressy clothes are not necessary, but are certainly acceptable. Dockers style pants or nicer shorts and a polo shirt for guys is fine. Similar dress for women as well.

Saw all three of your shows in the past. Excellent choices. :thumbsup2. Enjoy!

As others have said - nice casual. I'm from the old school (1970s & 80s-when I saw my first shows) so I have a tendency of dressing on the more nicer casual side and I have taught my teenagers to do the same :lmao:

Wicked & Rock of Ages are fabulous. I'm not much of a Book of Mormon fan but my DH loved it. We're going in on Friday to see Les Mis and then again in a couple of weeks to see Aladdin & A Gentlemen's Guide. May see Newsies again before it leaves :guilty: we've seen it at PaperMill and on Broadway and :lovestruc it!

Thanks Guys! I am going to have them pack the dressy casuals, and hope I can get them to wear it!
