I haven't seen this movie--only the commercials on TV. But I have to think that Waly Disney would be rolling over in his grave about the Disney name being attached to an animated movie with such terrible quality animation. It looks like the old Speed Racer cartoon show. Ugh. Just awful. :sad1::sad1:

I will guess that you are talking about The Secret World of Arrietty. It is from Studio Ghibli in Japan and produced by Hayao Miyazaki. That is why is has that look to it, as most Ghibli movies do. I personally love their films and can't wait for this one.

Some other Ghibli films -
My Neighbor Totoro
Spirited Away
Kiki's Delivery Service
Ponyo
Howl's Moving Castle

There are many, many others and this genre has a decently sized, very devoted fan base. If you haven't seen one you should give them a try.

I must admit that I thought the same thing. Nothing against the genre, but Disney? I am sure someone will point out the error of my ways, but I wanted to agree that I thought the exact same thing when I saw the preview at the theaters.

In the ad, the girl states they are borrowers, but the movie itsef is the one mentioned above. And there is nothing wrong with the quality of the animation, that is the genre itself of Japanese animation. Disney has done other movies of this style before.

i haven't heard of the one the op mentioned but Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle are really good to watch. i like that kind!

Oh, OK. Guess it is something that can be appreciated by some. But not by me. I never liked the cheap Japanese cartoons when I was a kid, and I don't see much difference in this type of animation. It is so "Un-Disney" to me.

Keep in mind that this is not animated by Disney, and that Disney is simply in partnership with Ghibli Studios which has a specific style.

It used to be that at one time a lot of the Miyazaki animation was done it was years before it came to America. At the time that was what was available and Miyazaki is highly respected in many parts of the world for his work in films.

Take a look at Howl's Moving Castle. The backgrounds and the details are ahmazing!

It's not the first time Disney has teamed up with Studio Ghibli to bring Miyazaki's films to the US. From the Disney DVD site:

The Secret World of Arrietty, Ponyo, Tales from Earthsea, Castle in the Sky, Kiki's Delivery Service, My Neighbor Tortoro, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Porco Rosso, and My Neighbors the Yamadas.

I love the work that Studio Ghibli does, but I can understand those who don't. I don't think the animation is low quality, just the opposite. I think the animation is beautiful and the stories are wonderful. Ponyo is one of my daughter's favorites. I haven't seen all of them, but Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke are at the top of my list.

I'm not sure if Walt Disney would be turning over in his grave. Maybe he would embrace the differences.

If you haven't watched any of Miyazaki's films, please do - his animation is amazing, SO incredibly detailed, so incredibly beautiful - nothing cheap about them. We love, love. love Disney, but also own and love Castle in the Sky, Kiki's Delivery Service, Spirited Away, and Howl's Moving Castle. They are truly beautiful and wonderful movies. I can't wait for this new one.

I assumed Ghibli films were the kind of "cheap" animation I didn't like--then I watched some. They are outstanding, stunning, breathtaking... The style of animation, especially dealing with mouths, is different--but these movies absolutely adhere to Disney's standards for animation. (Now _Belle's Enchanted Christmas_, on the other hand... ;))

Having said that, everyone has their tastes--this is merely mine!:goodvibes

Yes! I don't know how they could be viewed as "cheap." Miyazaki is very well known and respected for his work. They are beautifully animated with much attention to detail. I'm so excited for this new movie.

For all the people that are Miyazaki fans, Amazon has several books that feature the art from the movies. I know there are editions for Ponyo, Howl's Moving Castle, Kiki's Delivery Service, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Porco Rosso and My Neighbor Totoro. They are beautiful books and we have really enjoyed them.

I seem to remember people saying the same kinds of things when Disney partnered with Pixar. It was so different from hand drawn animation.... how could they ever do that!

Well, years later and dozen of movies to their credit. I don't think any of us could imagine Disney with out Pixar Place and all it's wonderful characters.:)

I would like to think so.

Have you ever seen "Destino", the collaboration between Disney and Salvador Dali? It was started in 1945 when both Walt Disney and Salvador Dali were still alive, but they didn't have the money to finish it. When they were making Fantasia 2000 (speaking of different styles), the project was found again, and finished. It's beautiful.

I'm looking forward to seeing The Secret World of Arriety.

I loved The Borrowers as a child. My teens read the book when they were little and they can't wait to see it. My younger children, having seen Ponyo, are also excited to see it. Different doesn't have to be viewed as bad. I love the style of the previous movies and think they are beautifully moving.

I have to admit this type of animation took a little bit of time to grow on me, but now I really like it. We were introduced to Kiki's Delivery Service and Totoro by a Japanese friend about ten years ago and now we are really looking forward to Ariety (sp?). Just think of it as a different style of animation.

I love Studio Ghibli films! I don't think Disney would roll in his grave-- I believe he would be happy and proud of his company for teaming up with a studio to reach more audiences in different ways-- all about progress right? ;)

Looking forward to this movie!

I'm really looking forward to this movie as well. I absolutely loved Totoro and Howl's Moving Castle. :goodvibes

On that note, Miyazaki has incredible films. They have a little something for everyone, and are full of emotion. Happy, Sad, Funny, Heart-warming, etc. If you haven't watched a film by him, I highly suggest you do.
