The Borrowers movie

My kids are HUGE Miyazaki fans. My DD17 loves everything Japanese, especially anime and manga movies and books. Needless to say, the Mitsukoshi Department Store in the Japanese pavillion at Epcot gets ALL her spending money when we are there.

Anyhow, she introduced her little sisters to the Miyazaki movies, because they are kid-friendly, but something that she could enjoy with them. There are a few of them that none of the kids really enjoyed (Kiki and Earthsea, I believe) but by and large they love them.

Ponyo and Totoro are my 8 year old's two favorite movies in the whole world, and even I think the Totoro movie is adorable.

I LOVED the Borrowers books as a child - read my copies over and over till they fell apart - and I am REALLY looking forward to Arrietty. I hope they stay pretty close to the spirit, if not the original storyline, of the books.

Definitely not "cheap Japanese cartoons" at all. Amazingly talented HAND animators. If anything Pixar's computer animation is the "cheap" version of this kind of true artistry, although I personally feel both have merit.

I am a Ghibili studios fan. If anyone hasn't seen Totoro (who appears in Toy Story 3) ,Spirited Away and my favorite Howl's Magic Castle please do. There are others like Castle in the Sky and Kiki's Delivery Service which are great. I don't believe that Miyazaki's films are cheap at all! His animation and writing are not the least bit lazy and there are so many details to his work.

As for Walt Disney rolling in his grave let the man rest in peace... literally and figuratively.

I love Studio Ghibli films! They have such a unique 2D flair to them, and they're great to boot. I'm glad Disney does the dubbing for the Japanese "Disney" company. :)

We have been a huge anime family over the years. My favorite is My Neighbor Totoro along with Spirited Away. My teen daughter is also into japanese manga books. I swear we could open our own bookstore here in our house!!
It isn't for everyone so I understand where you are coming from.

Ok, now this is weird. I just saw another ad on TV for this movie, so I paid close attention. It DID call it the Borrowers. It even ended with a graphic that said "The Borrowers". Am I crazy? Has anyone else seen the ad calling it The Borrowers?

They call themselves 'Borrowers' but the movie titles is not "The Borrowers"

"My mother, father and I are all Borrowers."

Did it possibly say "Based on The Borrowers" instead of that being the titile?

I will guess that you are talking about The Secret World of Arrietty. It is from Studio Ghibli in Japan and produced by Hayao Miyazaki. That is why is has that look to it, as most Ghibli movies do. I personally love their films and can't wait for this one.

Some other Ghibli films -
My Neighbor Totoro
Spirited Away
Kiki's Delivery Service
Ponyo
Howl's Moving Castle

There are many, many others and this genre has a decently sized, very devoted fan base. If you haven't seen one you should give them a try.

They are fantastic films - love love love them!!! Looking forward to seeing this one.

In fact, when we first saw the trailer, my ds15 asked me, is this a Miyazaki?

I enjoyed Ponyo.. but I have to admit I am not a fan of the animation..

maybe it is because when i was young the animation from japan was considered cheap.. (like old speed racer) mouths not moving etc.
compared to the Disney animation at the time...

I keep waiting to see another commercial so I can see. But it definitely said "The Borrowers" in writing. Of course, I cant sit in front of the tube waiting for another commercial! But I will try to pay attention if one comes on!

I am not a fan either. I hated that type of animation when I was a kid. Cant stand the way the mouths move! :scared1:

Well, the thing with anime animation is that there are different forms. Speed Racer is radically different from the animation of Ghibili. It's kind of like how different Warner Bros. cartoons were different from Disney's cartoon shorts. There are some anime techniques that are very simple like Speed Racer (not a fan either) and then there are crazily detailed anime series and movies.

The ad I just saw for the movie started with a screen saying "Based on The Award-Winning Novel The Borrowers." The "based on the award-winning" was in smaller type, and "The Borrowers" was larger and in a different color. Maybe that is what you saw?

I've seen the commercial and it does say that it's BASED on The Borrowers.

BTW, am I the only one who remembers the live action version of The Borrowers from back in the late 90s? I always liked that movie.

ETA: Ok, sorry I didn't see several of the above posts until after I posted for some odd reason.
