About a year ago my husband asked me what I wanted to do for my 30th birthday. Not being all that pleased with being forced to leave my 20s,
I said I wanted to go somewhere warm and relax
I didnt want to think about being 30!
I guess I should first tell you about us. My husband Dan and I moved to London in August 2006 for his job. It is a 3 year temporary move, and we go back August 2009. We took the opportunity to come here so we could travel and see Europe before we settled down and had some kids. We have been to countless countries since moving here-and I blog about it and post photos on my website. (Feel free to follow our travels at www.themarriedtraveler.com)
When Dan asked me where I wanted to go for my 30th birthday, I thought about it and deciding that I was not too pleased with being forced to leave my 20s, I wanted to go somewhere warm and beachy and relax! We tend to go on a lot of short weekend get aways-always packing in as much as possible into a 4 day weekend, and I just didnt want to do that on my birthday. So I left the decision in Dans hand!
(**Side note: On his 30th birthday in February 2006 (our b-days are 1 day apart by the way), I surprised him with a 12 day trip to WDW! It was his first time back there since 1997 when he worked the college program. It had been my first time back there since I was 10 years old. We have a propensity to surprise each other on special occasions!)
Unknown to me, Dan had decided on and booked a Disney Cruise for the week of our birthdays. He did this back in March 2007, a full 11 months before we would go-oh the torture for him!! Thats a long time to wait!
We had heard rumors of the Magic coming to the Med and we had looked at it a long time before he had decided to book the birthday cruise. We thought it was just too much money and most of the ports we had been to, so we forgot about it .for awhile.
When the Magic departed for the Med we started following it by reading blogs from people who had been on it or were on it-and we started talking about how amazing it is that the ship will only be an hour flight from us! Too bad it was so expensive. But the more we talked about it, the more an 11 day cruise sounded so perfect too bad it was so much money-or was it?
We decided to check the prices (the first sign that we will in fact book a trip we shouldnt is the two of us hypothetically speaking about it and then looking at dates and prices just in case!). We found out that the cruise hadnt sold out for a few of the dates yet and the prices were slashed in half!!! It wasnt so pricey after all!!! And really, was it a big deal we had been to some of the ports already? (Here is where immense justification of splurging commences) We realized we had never been to Rome TOGETHER after all-only on separate trips! Of course we had to book this trip! And a flight to Barcelona from London on Easyjet was super cheap-only about $100 for the 2 of us round trip! At this point we knew we were going to do it but I wasnt in on all the information and Dan was hesitating.
He said we had to talk about my birthday first if we were going to decide this .I wasnt sure what one had to do with the other, and in fact I thought he wanted to talk about my birthday because he wouldnt be able to take 11 days off in the summer and another 7-10 days in the winter. (Not knowing where we were going I wasnt sure about the time we would be away). So I started looking at how many days off he had and all that-not realizing that wasnt the issue. Dan was struggling and I didnt know why.
He finally decided the only way we could decide on this trip was if I had all the information. So he locked me in the office while he set up the other room to give me my surprise. I was beginning to suspect a trip to Disney World I dont know why but I didnt think he had planned a cruise (Im an idiot sometimes, what can I say?)
So he opens the door and I walk out to a sea of Goofys and other various plush (we have a collection of Plush Goofys and other Disney plush) and among them was the cruise package documents and on the TV was the cruise DVD!!! We were going to the Caribbean!!!!
So after the initial excitement wore off, we started talking about whether we should do 2 Disney cruises in one year (of course!!!). I think he wanted me to know that he had thought of this before we started talking about the Med Cruise and he was nervous it wouldnt be as special since now the Med Cruise would be our first time on the ship. We decided that the Med Cruise was just too good a deal to pass up and having been on the ship would just make the anticipation that much better for the Birthday Cruise!
I have blogged a great deal about the Med Cruise-and it all on my website-so feel free to read it!
So a few weeks before I knew about the birthday cruise, Dan had told me about someone flying all the way to Orlando (from a far distance I think) and going on the cruise and then going home, without a stop at Disney World. Now I know a lot of people do this, but I am a little crazy sometimes and I like to do things big (so does my husband, much to the dismay of our poor credit card). For example, for my husbands 30th, we didnt just spend 12 days at Disneyworld, I booked us at Grand Floridian for half and Animal Kingdom for the second half. We definitely splurged. We have a tendency to splurge on our vacations-its our favourite thing to do after all!
Well I think I put Dan into panic mode when I made the comment because clearly he had not planned on this-it never occurred to me that wed go all the way down there from London and not go to WDW! What an opportunity! We are in the states, an hour from the parks, how could we not go? Well, Dan and I know that our 3 years in Europe is a cherished time. He only gets so much vacation time per year and we want to make the most of it-seeing as much of Europe as possible. We know we can go to WDW anytime once we move home. And Dan is already sacrificing (and I use this term loosely) 6 days of vacation to go on the cruise, so how many more non-European vacation days was he willing to give up?
I talked him into 3 more!
Yeah! We were going to go to Disneyworld one day before the cruise and 2 days after! Sandwiching the World around the cruise so we wont be too depressed when the cruise ends, knowing we get to go back to the parks for 2 days! So now we had to add hotels! We decided not to splurge on hotels as the veranda room on the cruise was my birthday splurge. So we are staying at Port Orleans French Quarter when we get there and Pop Century after the cruise.
More drama is yet to come stay tuned for the travel agent and airline drama .!!
