About a year ago my husband asked me what I wanted to do for my 30th birthday. Not being all that pleased with being forced to leave my 20’s, I said I wanted to go somewhere warm and relax…I didn’t want to think about being 30!

I guess I should first tell you about us. My husband Dan and I moved to London in August 2006 for his job. It is a 3 year temporary move, and we go back August 2009. We took the opportunity to come here so we could travel and see Europe before we settled down and had some kids. We have been to countless countries since moving here-and I blog about it and post photos on my website. (Feel free to follow our travels at www.themarriedtraveler.com)

When Dan asked me where I wanted to go for my 30th birthday, I thought about it and deciding that I was not too pleased with being forced to leave my 20’s, I wanted to go somewhere warm and beachy and relax! We tend to go on a lot of short weekend get aways-always packing in as much as possible into a 4 day weekend, and I just didn’t want to do that on my birthday. So I left the decision in Dan’s hand!

(**Side note: On his 30th birthday in February 2006 (our b-days are 1 day apart by the way), I surprised him with a 12 day trip to WDW! It was his first time back there since 1997 when he worked the college program. It had been my first time back there since I was 10 years old. We have a propensity to surprise each other on special occasions!)

Unknown to me, Dan had decided on and booked a Disney Cruise for the week of our birthdays. He did this back in March 2007, a full 11 months before we would go-oh the torture for him!! That’s a long time to wait!

We had heard rumors of the Magic coming to the Med and we had looked at it a long time before he had decided to book the birthday cruise. We thought it was just too much money and most of the ports we had been to, so we forgot about it….for awhile.

When the Magic departed for the Med we started following it by reading blogs from people who had been on it or were on it-and we started talking about how amazing it is that the ship will only be an hour flight from us! Too bad it was so expensive. But the more we talked about it, the more an 11 day cruise sounded so perfect…too bad it was so much money-or was it?

We decided to check the prices (the first sign that we will in fact book a trip we shouldn’t is the two of us hypothetically speaking about it and then looking at dates and prices…just in case!). We found out that the cruise hadn’t sold out for a few of the dates yet and the prices were slashed in half!!! It wasn’t so pricey after all!!! And really, was it a big deal we had been to some of the ports already? (Here is where immense justification of splurging commences) We realized we had never been to Rome TOGETHER after all-only on separate trips! Of course we had to book this trip! And a flight to Barcelona from London on Easyjet was super cheap-only about $100 for the 2 of us round trip! At this point we knew we were going to do it…but I wasn’t in on all the information and Dan was hesitating.

He said we had to talk about my birthday first if we were going to decide this….I wasn’t sure what one had to do with the other, and in fact I thought he wanted to talk about my birthday because he wouldn’t be able to take 11 days off in the summer and another 7-10 days in the winter. (Not knowing where we were going I wasn’t sure about the time we would be away). So I started looking at how many days off he had and all that-not realizing that wasn’t the issue. Dan was struggling and I didn’t know why.

He finally decided the only way we could decide on this trip was if I had all the information. So he locked me in the office while he set up the other room to give me my surprise. I was beginning to suspect a trip to Disney World…I don’t know why but I didn’t think he had planned a cruise (I’m an idiot sometimes, what can I say?)

So he opens the door and I walk out to a sea of Goofy’s and other various plush (we have a collection of Plush Goofy’s and other Disney plush) and among them was the cruise package documents and on the TV was the cruise DVD!!! We were going to the Caribbean!!!!

So after the initial excitement wore off, we started talking about whether we should do 2 Disney cruises in one year (of course!!!). I think he wanted me to know that he had thought of this before we started talking about the Med Cruise and he was nervous it wouldn’t be as special since now the Med Cruise would be our first time on the ship. We decided that the Med Cruise was just too good a deal to pass up and having been on the ship would just make the anticipation that much better for the Birthday Cruise!

I have blogged a great deal about the Med Cruise-and it all on my website-so feel free to read it!

So a few weeks before I knew about the birthday cruise, Dan had told me about someone flying all the way to Orlando (from a far distance I think) and going on the cruise and then going home, without a stop at Disney World. Now I know a lot of people do this, but I am a little crazy sometimes and I like to do things big (so does my husband, much to the dismay of our poor credit card). For example, for my husband’s 30th, we didn’t just spend 12 days at Disneyworld, I booked us at Grand Floridian for half and Animal Kingdom for the second half. We definitely splurged. We have a tendency to splurge on our vacations-it’s our favourite thing to do after all!

Well I think I put Dan into panic mode when I made the comment because clearly he had not planned on this-it never occurred to me that we’d go all the way down there from London and not go to WDW! What an opportunity! We are in the states, an hour from the parks, how could we not go? Well, Dan and I know that our 3 years in Europe is a cherished time. He only gets so much vacation time per year and we want to make the most of it-seeing as much of Europe as possible. We know we can go to WDW anytime once we move home. And Dan is already “sacrificing” (and I use this term loosely) 6 days of vacation to go on the cruise, so how many more non-European vacation days was he willing to give up?

I talked him into 3 more! :cool1: Yeah! We were going to go to Disneyworld one day before the cruise and 2 days after! Sandwiching the World around the cruise so we won’t be too depressed when the cruise ends, knowing we get to go back to the parks for 2 days! So now we had to add hotels! We decided not to splurge on hotels as the veranda room on the cruise was my birthday splurge. So we are staying at Port Orleans French Quarter when we get there and Pop Century after the cruise.

More drama is yet to come…stay tuned for the travel agent and airline drama….!!

Dan had decided to use a travel agent for the birthday cruise because he had heard so many great things about the benefits of using one. (On board credit, great discounts, surprise upgrades..etc) Not to mention a lot less hassle than having to deal with Disney (which I did for the 2006 trip and what a nightmare experience that was!)

The girl Dan found seemed friendly enough but after the first conversation we had with her jointly, I didn’t feel like she was working for us really. I felt like she already made the sale and booked the cruise and was sort of done with us.

We had decided to use her for the Med Cruise anyway because she was already helping us and that turned out to be bad too. She told us we qualified for a $300 onboard credit but when we got onboard it wasn’t there. (We eventually worked it out-only after Disney pushed the TA for it). Apparently she wasn’t supposed to give us the credit and the agency wouldn’t let her, but since it was promised to her-they eventually gave in. It wasn’t something we asked for but since we were told we were getting it, imagine all of sudden for no reason being told you weren’t! $300 can go towards many “drinks of the day!!” HaHa.

This particular agency works a bit differently than most. Instead if you hiring the one TA, they don’t work on commission and you can speak to anyone about your issues. Sounds great in theory, until you have an issue you have and you have to explain your entire story from top to bottom to three different people after three different phone calls. It essentially becomes like you are dealing with Disney!

Our biggest issue came with the car rental (I’m onto the b-day trip now). We decided after listening to many podcasts talk about the advantages of having a car and not dealing with Disney transport-we decided to splurge and rent one when we got to Disneyworld. That way we could find out own way to the port on our own time and hopefully beat the masses and get there before the buses. Being in no rush on the way back, we opted to take Disney transport back to the parks at the end of the cruise.

We were quoted an amazing rate of $75 total for the way there and if we wanted a car on the way back it would also be $75. That’s how much Disney transport costs! We thought what a deal! Pay the same price as Disney transport but get our own car. We were in for both ways.

So we had her book it. Except this agency doesn’t handle the actual booking. They send it off somewhere else. Why would you outsource the booking? You’re a TRAVEL AGENCY!!!! So we get this e-bill that was for like $300!!!!! We couldn’t understand what the bill was for and we were freaking out! We soon figured it out and called our TA. Who was not there but so and so would be happy to help….so we had to explain the situation and hope this person knew how to help. She didn’t. We started emailing our TA and she was very nonchalant about the whole thing. It took her days to get back to us and when she did she told us we needed to contact the people who booked the car rental!!!!!! She was sending us to her outsourced agency! So we tried to contact them, this proved to be futile as they just saidm sorry that’s what the rate is. And our TA said, deal with the outsourc-ers, they make the quotes, I just tell you (WONGLY!) She wouldn’t help us at all! We found out it was $75 PER DAY not per rental (we asked her 4 times to check that our total would be $150 and she assured us it would.) We weren’t about to pay double what she quoted us. So we cancelled the car (for now) and tried to deal with our TA. We were so frustrated with her lack of empathy and helpfulness that we finally did what people of the 21st Century do: we posted a note on Disboards about it. And guess what? The owner of the company read it and emailed us to find out what happened. Of course he said he would call us (never did). But we were given to another agent to “deal with us”. Suddenly we were the problem customers who had to be dealt with!
There was nothing they could do about the rate, the original TA was just wrong about her quote and they couldn’t fix it. So our New TA found us another car place with a lower rate, but that’s when we decided to just get the car for the front half and not the back half. (It was about $96 dollars for the first half-only $20 more dollars than Disney transport and a lot more convenient). We had other issues, Disney won’t pick you up from Pop Century se had flipped out resorts but there was no AAA rates left for Port Orleans, none of this our original TA had told us. So we were dealing with a host of issues with our new TA. But it finally got settled and we were now going to Pop Century first and Port Orleans French Quarter on the way back-to sort of save the best for last. (With the promise by the TA to check and see if AAA rates open up for Port Orleans).

This all took place in September 2007….the next drama comes over Christmas. British Airways cancels our flight!!!! One month from our departure!!!!!!!

Stay Tuned…..:wizard:

This is Perdie's hubby and I'm really looking forward to this trip and hope it's as special as I am imagining. You deserve it Mrs B.!!

Only 11 more days and we are on our way to our happy place.

Looking forward to reliving it through your reports on the boards, and I'll be sure to toss in my few cents as well.

While Dan and I are happily counting down the days just waiting and waiting for the 31st of January to arrive, we decide we need a fix in a major way. We can't wait until the end of January to get a taste of some magic....so we plan a quick trip to Disneyland paris!

We had AP's that expired in October (oops) so after a few very frustrating calls to Disney (no they will not give you the AP rate over the phone if you have not bought the new AP's yet-just for a price comparison!) AND you can't book a Disney Hotel room without either a package with park tockets or buying an AP....so we opted for the Holiday Inn! It was a great call, one of the nicest Holiday Inn's we have ever stayed at! Dan wrote a TR about this whole trip on the Disboard DLP site.....

It was just what the Doctor ordered-a little Christmas time Disney Magic!
We were there from Dec 20th-24th and while we were there the Tower of Terror opened up! Yeah!

BUT the real drama came the night before we were to leave for DLP. We were happily packed and sitting on the couch watching TV-counting down the minutes until the next day...and of course we casually checked our email before we were going to go to bed and BAM!!!!! A casual email from British Airways saying...Oh hey, by the way, you know that 10 hour flight you've had booked for months now...yeah well we decided to cancel that for no reason whatsoever-hope you get this email! Good luck! hahahaha....Ok, it didn't quite say that...but it felt like it!

Let the panic begin.....Dan had only so many days of leave for this trip and he really couldn't afford what we were already taking! These three years overseas were supposed to be about seeing Europe and 10 days in the states was a lot of leave! So they gave us two options when we called BA-not satisfied with their "Just rebook online! It's as easy as a click!" So we called and they gave us two options 1) Take the same flight on Wednsday (one day earlier) or 2) Take the flight the following day on Friday (one day later). Well seeing as how we are going on a cruise on saturday we didn't want to risk anything going wrong on Friday (flight delayed or canceled would leave us not getting there until Saturday and missing the cruise!) Not to mention we were planning on going to the parks beforehand!

So we were FORCED to spend one more day at Disneyworld! How rude! :lmao: But it was actually a problem since now we needed another hotel night and another night with the infamous rental car....oh boy we sooo did not want to deal with the rental car again.....

We called our favorite travel agency and of course got a completely different person this time and our new girl was not available. We had not spoken to them since September-having no need or desire to deal with them anymore we were doing any other planning on our own at this point. But since our infamous car rental was with them we had to call. The new new girl we were now talking to was actually the most helpful person at that agency. She was thoughtful, nice and funny and if she had been our TA from the start we may not have had such a bad experience!! But again, even if she was our original booking agent, everytime you call you just deal with the person you get on the phone...because you are not really assigned to a specific agent.

So after going through the whole saga, she tells us that adding one extra night at the car rental will DOUBLE the cost. We went from $96 to $200!!!! We decide that it isn't worth it....and even though we really wanted to have control over when we got to port, we decided to go with Disney Transport and save the money.

Next problem: Disney will not pick us up at Pop Century. We had chosen Pop because there was no AAA rates at POFQ for the first few days of our trip and we planned on staying there at the end of the trip instead. (But our TA was supposed to keep checking to see if AAA rates opened up). Well no one ever checked and sure enough AAA rates DID open up-lucky us! Because in order to have disney pick us up we needed to be staying there not Pop...So now we had to flip our hotel ressies (we were not pleased that no one had been checking for us on this as the whole point of a TA is mostly to get the discounts!) Anyway so we flipped them and added the extra night and now we would be stayin at POFQ for three nights in the beginning and Pop for two nights after the cruise.

We thought we were all set! So we hung up with new new TA and started obsessing over Disney again :thumbsup2
Sometimes Dan and I plan simoultaneous trips....and we decided to go to WDW over Thanksgiving 2008. (Dan has "home leave" that his job gives him that doesn't count towards his regular leave and you can take it after 2 years and as long as you go to the United States, it doesn't matter if you actually go home. So we decided to split up the home leave-use half of it to go home next Xmas and the other half to go to WDW!!

We decided surely we were not going to use the same agent as this time around-so we decided on one we heard mentione on a podcast many times...and that night after all the fuss and frustration-at about midnight our time-we called the new TA and started talking about our trip in November!!! We are so obsessed-can you tell??

Anyway, we had a great chat with the TA and we think we picked a better agency (fingers crossed)....

So after we return from DLP, Dan and I do not believe the whole rental car thing and start doing more of our own research. Sure enough after many hours on the internet we find a rate at Budget for three days at $120. We decide that for $25 more dollars than our original price, we are willing to pay to not deal with Disney transport and now we can get to the Port on our own time. So we book it on our own and call our old TA and cancel their Disney booking (also means we didn't have to flip hotels-but we leave it anyway).

I'm not sure why our TA couldn't find us a better rate but we used the discount codes we found on mousesavers and were easily able to get a cheaper rate. (We did notice everytime the TA gave us a rate she wasn;t giving us the cheapest car-she was giving us the moderate size...and for two people for three days-we don't need anything fancy).

So we finally relax (a bit) and some documents from Disney arrive! Yeah! Not our cruise docs but our Magical Express Docs. Of course we now only need Magical Express for the way home...and wouldn't you know it? They had us needing Magical Express on the day we leave for our cruise! Because we are checking out of our hotel that day-somehow there was a miscommunication with Disney saying we needed to go to the airport that day....hmmm....not sure where that miscommunication could have possibly come from! We called disney ourselves-bypassing the TA middleman and settled it...and cross your fingers we will get a bus to go home on! (Although being stuck st Disneyworld isn't the worst thing that ever happened to a person!)

So now we are 10 days out-whoopee!!!!!:cool1: And the days are going by like molasses......We are trying to make sure we have everything and do any last minute shopping....and praying that nothing else happens with our flight! (Of course if any of you heard-out here in London a BA 777 had a major incident at Heathrow last week-both engines gave out during landing and they crashed-but no one was hurt seriosly-thank god-and for a few days I was freaked out they would ground all BA 777's!) But it looks like they won't....hopefully! And hopefully that doesn't happen again :scared1:

Ten days and counting....TBC

:beach:

Hey Perdie-
Sorry to hear about all the trouble you have had with scheduling your upcoming trip. Your TA doesn't sound like they should be in business! Well in 10 days all your worries will be gone and you will be enjoying yourselves at WDW and on the DCL, which by the way we set sail on the Magic on 2/2 too! Don't you just love Mousesavers! Mary does a great job with that site. We have used it so many times I have lost count. We have rented cars on several locations and have never used Disney's Magical Express but opted for Happy Limo instead, which is fantastic! There's nothing like door-to-door service in a Town Car or Limo!
I hope that the next several days leading up to your flight is stress free.
Have a great vacation.

Thanks! Doesn't it feel like the next 9 days are going to take FOREVER!!! We are so excited! It's also going to be our first time back in the US since we left in Agust 2006! So it really feels like we are going home!:yay:

Are you going to WDW first too? Or straight to the cruise? Are you taking Happy Limo again? I agree about Mary-she always has the best rates!!

I am sure we'll see you on the ship!!!!

My DH is driving from NC to FL on Wed. and will spend a few days at WDW. I am flying to MCO after work on Fri. We will drive to the port on Sat. arriving by 10am. We are meeting some friends from VA, their adult son and his girlfriend.

We use Happy Limo on short trips. We find it more convenient.

The best one we ever did was Christmas Day, 2005. Our DD was in the college program and working at EPCOT. She had a 15 hour shift and was really sad that she was not able to come home for Christmas. Our son and his wife came home for the holiday so she was really upset that she would miss them too! Since our son and his wife were spending Christmas day with her side, my DH and I decided to jump on Southwest and fly down to surprise her. Our driver, Robert, was so awesome. He asked us how long we were on vacation for and we replied 5 hours! Our flight was only $40 roundtrip p/p so why not surprise her. She was working the boat ride at the land and we were standing at the exit holding posters wishing her a Merry Christmas. When her boat came around the corner and she saw us, she started crying infront of 50 passengers! It was priceless! So we spent the next 4 hours with her as she worked, greeting guests and giving out fast passes. We met her supervisors and all cast members that worked with her that day. So when it was time to leave we had the same limo driver and Robert asked us how it went. We told him and he was amazed by our story. So everytime we have Happy Limo we request Robert, and each time he remembers us and asks how our daughter is doing! He is a real people person. So thats probably more info than you wanted to know, but it was a magical moment anyway.

So back to the cruise...are you packed yet! We started sorting out our stuff over the weekend. I have been checking the weather in St. Thomas, looks like it will be warm and sunny!

See ya real soon!

What an amazing story! I bet that's on Xmas your DD will never forget!:santa: I love hearing about magical moments like that!

We started going through our clothes this weekend-the tedious process of trying things on from the summer to see if we lost/gained any weight! We've been dieting for a month in the hopes that our clothes will be loose enough for us to gorge ourselves to into oblivion! (Or at least gorge ourselves to the point where the clothes are once again tight!) :rotfl: The good news is the mostly salad diet has been working! The even better news? One week from today I can eat whatever I want whenever I want! :woohoo:

We'll pack everything this weekend so we aren't stressing after work Tuesday night. We fly on our long 10 hour flight on Wednesday-and we hope to have enough energy when we arrive to head over to Goofy's Candy shop-what better way to break our diet than from a treat from Goofy's?

Are you all packed? What are your plans in St Thomas and St Maarten? I think we are going to go to St John and relax at Trunk Bay (it's bay right?) And in St Maarten we will either go to Divi Little Bay Resort or Orient Beach and then head to Marigot to shop. 7:cool1: days!

Hey Perdie-

Your message made me think, I should try stuff on before I pack it just in case....AND I HAVE A BIG PROBLEM! In other words my formal dress that I was planning on wearing does not fit anymore...I wore it three years ago for my sons wedding. What was I thinking?! The same weight and dress size three years later...I must have been nuts to think that I would be able to fit into it again. Its been a bad week and this just added to it...I do, however, have a nice skirt that I was going to wear for semi-formal so now I will be wearing it for both events...but I need to purchase another top. I won't wear the same one twice! It's just not right...

We have book excursions in St Thomas and St Marteen but I dont remember which ones.

I need to try and book Palo's once we get on board...I missed out at the 90 day mark, we were at Disneyland and I completely forgot. When we got back home and I logged on the DCL, Palo's did not have an opening for either dinner or brunch so I called them. They said we had to book online. Now they are telling me to check the desk when we board the ship. So that is what we will do. And if by some chance we can not get a reservation, we'll thats okay too. We have done dinner several times in the past.

Diet before the cruise? That is not happening here, too stressed out...daughter-in-law is due to have baby girl the end of February, and Dr. says she will probably deliver early. It's our first grandchild and although they are 2.5 hrs from us, I really want to be in NC and not the Caribbean when she goes into labor.. We will be connecting to the internet while on the cruise for updates and also to check on our 21 yr old daughter....once a mom, always a worrier!

Have a great flight Wednesday and enjoy your days at WDW...See ya on the ship!

Cindy

My husband and I have this ritual of trying everything on before we pack for any trip-because we are constantly up and down by 5-10 lbs in our weight! It's a turbulent, emotional weight rollercoaster and sometimes I wish I had been blessed by the metabolism gods of skinny-but sadly I was not! So I try everything on (and sometimes I get lucky and get to buy new clothes that are smaller!)

My sister is having her second baby, due in April-we are all very excited about it! It will be the first girl in the family since me!

Congratulations on impending Grandmother-hood!!

Good luck with your packing-didn't mean to stress you out even more ; )

See you on the ship!
-Becca:woohoo:

Awesome pre-trip report so far, Becca! Love it!!

I hope to see all you guys at our DIS meet on embarkation day!

-gina-

We are packed too! Not sure if I will see you at the Dis meet or not...we need to try and get Palo reservations and meet up with our friends...but look for us at the sail away party...we will have our mickey hands on and blue tropical mickey ears too!

Everyone have a safe trip to the port!

p.s. Perdie- I found a dress for formal night! Yay.:cheer2:

and by the way....HAPPY 30TH BIRTHDAY !!!! There's no better place to spend your Birthday than with all your friends at Disney!

Looks like my DIL will have our first grandchild while we are on the cruise...so if anyone sees me crying on Wednesday, 2/6th its because I have become a GRANDMOTHER!

For updates walk by cabin 6080...

I am so $%@#@ excited I could just bust! Not much work getting done today!:woohoo:

So was your grandshild born on Feb 6th???? GREAT DAY-that's my birthday too!! Hope all went well! I am so sad to be home-but you have something wonderful to look forward to! :cool1:

Just wanted to update everyone-I am still on holiday even though the cruise ended last week. I came home to AZ to visit my family while my husband went back to London (Valentine's Day apart :sad1: )

We had a great time on the cruise and our Disneyworld trips in between! We joined DVC while on board-didn't think we'd be dropping that kind of money on board!!! :scared1: haha We're very happy we did it and I'll be doing a thourough trip report when I get home-in the meantime hopefully my husband will post some pictures so I can see them from here

I'll be posting more to some...stay tuned!!!! :wizard:
