On 7/3/12 I flew from NY to Orlando to start my 4/3 nite vacation and stayed at POR Riverside at a new Royal Room (separate discussion) at another day/time.
When you have a 0630 am departure and up at 0330, the selection of what you plan to do on your arrival day is important because you are tired from travel, getting up extremely early and should I add the excessive heat and humidity across the entire eastern seaboard . . . but the intensity of the heat in Orlando with no breeze was brutal . . . like nothing I have ever experienced . . . I had my hydro-flask with me and blew through alot of money in paying my $2.50 per bottle of water . . . totaling around a dozen bottles throughout the day, otherwise you will get dehydrated in a moments notice.
Given I only had the usual half-day on a travel day, I decided to go to The Animal Kingdom Theme Park vs The Disney Village Marketplace/DTD or the Studios, which is my usual first day agenda. The AK theme park was opened in 98 and I visited in 01 . . . two weeks after the AKL opened (received a good package deal at that time for a Deluxe) . . . and I wasnt totally thrilled the park back then, but I also not at first thrilled with EPCOT in the Fall of 2002 when it first opened, but certain countries were still under construction at that time and I had other reasons for that first impression. My opinion of EPCOT changed of course over the past 3 decades of going there at least annually. But in terms of the Animal Kingdom,
I had some initial reservations in going, but this time I was very impressed, by the number and variety of animals I saw, the movement of the animals, the detailed theming throughout the park and particularly the paintings on the walls, the food (I ate at the Flame Tree Barbecue and thought the pork sandwich meal for $9.58 was very good for park cuisine) . . . that equivalent sandwich albeit BBQ Turkey at the Diamond Horseshow was no where near as eatable.
The photos below are a small subset of my recent trip and the rest I post as usual on my Smugmug site, but I thought I would share my Best of the Animal Kingdom to round out your weekend.
Enjoy!
