The Beneficial Effect of Smoking

Obviously ridiculous now but it was apparently an extremely common thing for doctors in the ‘50’s to prescribe cigarettes for people’s “nerves” (read mental health issues). And ignoring everything else, being as nicotine is the strongest dopamine stimulator known to man, they were actually on to something. :scratchin

Wow. The worst one is the one targeting children (a 5 year old?!). I love how it says, “thank medical science for that.”

I remember back in the day when visiting a hospital, there would always be lots of doctors and nurses outside smoking.

Smoking used to be something that was socially acceptable longer before anyone realized the health issues. Or smoking in the office. I can remember being in meetings in a small conference room where there was this haze floating around the room from smokers. Or places like bowling alleys with low ceilings where your clothes smelled like smoke when you got home.

Fortunately, smoking is no longer permitted in most work places. FTC has also gotten better are preventing ads that claim unproven health benefits to any product. You can't claim something cures cancer if you don't have the proper scientific evidence to make such claims.

Anytime at school I needed to knock on the door of the staff lounge for something, the smell of smoke upon the door being opened was overwhelming. And this wasn’t a “smoking lounge”, this was the actual staff lounge. Also one of our teachers constantly smoked his pipe during lessons.

i recall my father who passed from lung cancer in 1980 saying that many men his age never started smoking until they entered the military during ww2 and received cigarettes as part of their daily k rations-4 cigarettes were provided with every meal. there was the belief that it helped calm individuals.

I've heard of some famous people who claimed that they only smoked during their high stress work. One was the 3-star general Russel Honore, who was seen smoking quite often while he was dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. My understanding was that he didn't smoke much other than when he was in high stress situations. And then there was golfer Lee Trevino who said he mostly smoked on the golf course although it took him a while to quit.

My primary care dr still smokes outside, but I can still smell it on his clothes during an appt. Nice guy but seems hypocritical of him to admonish me about my health when he doesn't take care of his own.

My dad said the same thing. He too died of lung cancer and did not smoke until he was in the Army. But he added, "being on the front lines, you never knew if you were going to be alive tomorrow" so the health risk from smoking was much less of an immediate issue.
