The Avengers ?

In a discussion about who is a lame character and who is not, being a comic book collector lends no weight to one's OPINION. Simply meaning, just because you think he's lame doesn't make it universally true just because you know more about comics than the lay person.

....

Also, your assertion that Black Widow had a "small cameo" at the beginning of the movie was just flat out incorrect.
First off her part as an assitant. Is not big. Especially for such a big actress. Almost EVERY single person who has seen Iron man 2 don't even remember her being it. So maybe cameo was a poor choice of words but she isnt a main character.

And NO ONE has seen the avengers movie yet for no one can rightfully say what you need or don't need to know.

As for my comment to thor being a lame character. I never said it was univerally correct. I said "In my opinion" which means that I understand that my OPINION is not the most important thing ever.

HOWEVER, I am a firm believer in the more you know about something the better you can judge it. You can't judge a song by a 10 sec clip and you can't judge a character or story line that has been created, grown, and adjusted for decades on a hour and half movie.

I'm excited for the movie but I actually don't like most marvel comics. I respect them ina certain matter but I always found Thor's character to be lame. I never took much interest in the other characters. Captain America was the only one I thought was worth any salt. But that's my opinion. AGAIN opinion.

I don't know what anyone NEEDs to know going into watch the movie. Infact I'm sure they will do a wonderfull job at catching everyone up on the stories.

I'm not going revoke my opinion. I never said I knew better than anyone else but I do think my knowing more about the character because seen more than the movies DOES in fact hold weight. If we are talking about the charcters than we are talking about the characters. And what happens/doesnt happen to them in the comics is important when you are judging the CHARACTERS. Maybe not when judging the movie.

So again, You guys need to calm down. I never said anyone else was wrong. I gave my opinion. It seems to me that you guys are the ones who are a little closed off to new opinions.

I dunno. Everyone I know remembers ScarJo in skin tight leather/latex (including legions of comic book geeks. I suggest checking out aintitcool.com). I personally can't name a single person who doesn't recall her or her role from the movie, aside from my mother who often can't recall what she ate for breakfast.

None of us here have seen the movie but it has been screened by the media and the reviews are looking GREAT. As far as what happens in the movie that the lay person may want some background on, THOR is a must watch, and the other movies would be exceptionally helpful, particularly if the viewer has no prior knowledge of the franchise.

BTW, I don't agree or disagree with your opinion on Thor, but I do appreciate it.

You probably haven't heard but lots of people have already seen The Avengers.
I don't know whether anyone on this thread has seen it yet but there have already been several screenings of it. I have friends who have seen it. They have said that storyline-wise, it ties in the most with Thor.

I'm sure you are right that they will do a good job of filling in the story for those who haven't seen Thor, but obviously the back story will be more complete for anyone who has seen Thor and the other movies.

Handbag Lady posted on this thread that she has seen it already. The movie premiered in LA and reviews were embargoed. But most of the reports I've seen have said it was great, the clips don't do it justice (and the clips are awesome) and that Joss Whedon did a great job.

I've seen The Avengers and although the other movies listed above are not needed to enjoy it, they will GREATLY enhance your "OMG" and "Oh, WOW!" of the movie.

And I loved The Avengers so much, I just can't stand it. I will probably see it two more times in theatres. The character development is quite crafty and well done such that you get to know each Avenger but not at the expense of the overall movie.

Itsy - I don't know who you hang with that doesn't remember Scarlett Johansson in Iron Man 2. :confused3

Oops. I either missed or forgot her post. Sorry, Handbag Lady!

I haven't heard one single negative thing from anyone who has seen the movie. Every person I know who saw it absolutely loved it. I try to avoid most real reviews before I see a movie but every quick little review on Twitter and every headline I've seen about The Avengers has been good.

I agree with you particularly when it comes to the horrible portrayal of Rogue. Why did they turn her into Jubilee? I'm also a big Gambit fan and how would he ever have a relationship with this version of Rogue? I guess that it's a good thing that he has never really been used. (Except in the lame Wolverine movie but I won't go there. :furious: )

I used to read comics so does that give me any expertise on the subject of Thor lameness? ;) Whatever, I love the Thor character and think that this portrayal is super. Any others not liking him or any other superheroes means nothing to me.

The Wolverine movie wasn't that bad. I'm still not over X-Men First Class. :sad2:

I have a friend who saw it as well, he liked it so much that he's planning to go back at least once more and probably more like two more times.

There is Thor - however, in the opinion of a comic book collector, He's a pretty lame character. There is also a Hulk movie. However, make sure you watch Iron Man 2 again - in the begining Scarlette Johanson has a small cameo where she takes down a friend of Starks. Most people don't notice it and forget she is in it by the end of the movie. Anyways, it's the only into that her character, the black widow, gets.

I disagree with your opinion, in my opinion Thor is a great character and his movie is very integral to The Avengers. Not a huge collector but I worked in a comic book store for a few years, loved that job!! In fact I have quite a few comics from my time spent there.....
Hmmmm, I remember ScarJo being in IM2......and I'm pretty sure my DBF does too.....:rotfl:

Simply meaning, just because you think he's lame doesn't make it universally true just because you know more about comics than the lay person. My husband knows way more about music than I do (I call him a music snob) but that doesn't mean that just because he thinks Coldplay is lame, that Coldplay is actually a lame musical group. Plenty of people like them, even people who are music afficionados like DH claims to be.

Me personally? I'm a BIG fan of the way RDJ portrays Tony Stark, and I really loved Edward Norton as The Hulk (which is why I'm cheesed about Mark Ruffalo, but I understand that Ed Norton wanted more creative control over the character than Joss Whedon was willing to concede). I even liked the Ang Lee Hulk on many levels. It had its flaws, but overall I liked it.

I really hope Joss has done The Avengers justice. I've been waiting for this movie since I was a kid, wearing my towel cape tied around my neck and running through the backyard playing superheroes with my cousins. We'd spend hours pouring over my cousins comic collection and then head outside to play. My cousin loved superheroes so much that he pursued a career in law enforcement and manages a comic book store on the side. I just wish he didn't live in another state otherwise he and I would be there at opening night together.

As an aside, my very favorite of all superheroes is Rogue from the X-Men. I'm still PISSED of the horrible casting of and subsequent horrible job Anna Pacquin did to that character.

ITA with the bolded statements you made. I love RDJ as Tony Stark, he's seemingly perfect for the role and I'm sooooooooooooooo glad he keeps coming back for the movies. :) I too hope insanely that Joss did a good job, but from the reports I've seen he sure did! :)

:thumbsup2

My friend said the same thing, that it was incredible and he can't wait to see it again. He saw it right before he came back to the US so he's anxiously awaiting this weekend!

What else has Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) been in? I'm sure I've seen him pre Thor but wanting to be sure.

Hey, it is all good. :hippie: After the movie comes out on May 4th, it doesn't matter who has seen it first.

You know what I hate with a passion? Spoilers. I think people who spoil things should be shot.

I didn't mind First Class since the acting was so good in a few cases. For me it was X-Men 3 and Spiderman 3. Awful, awful movies.

At least we get a do-over with "The Amazing Spiderman" this year.
