The Avengers ?

I'm ready for this movie too! You have to watch Thor so I agree with the others. I think the Hulk might help some.

DH just told me there are two Hulk movies. Which one should I watch? Or do I need to watch both?

My opinion is in the minority but I like them BOTH. However, in reference to the upcoming Avengers movie, the one you need to watch is "The Incredible Hulk", the one with Edward norton from 2008.

Should I watch any other movies before I go see The Avengers? I've seen Iron Man 1 and 2. And I have Captain America on hold at the library. Any others...

There is Thor - however, in the opinion of a comic book collector, He's a pretty lame character. There is also a Hulk movie. However, make sure you watch Iron Man 2 again - in the begining Scarlette Johanson has a small cameo where she takes down a friend of Starks. Most people don't notice it and forget she is in it by the end of the movie. Anyways, it's the only into that her character, the black widow, gets.

She had a fairly decent sized role in the movie. MUCH more than just a cameo. Hawkeye in Thor was just a cameo. As for your opinion, it is just that...being a collector lends it no weight. I can ask a hundred "comic collectors" and they'll each have a VEHEMENT opinion on who is lame and who is not.

:confused3 She's in a huge hunk of the movie!
The character Thor may be lame (In your opinion, I loved the movie), but the movie is a good lead up to the Avengers. I'm sure you could walk in The Avengers without seeing any of the others but are all intertwined.

Required viewing for those who are not comic savvy...

Iron Man 1&2
The Hulk
Captain America
Thor

In that order. Keep in mind that there is a different actor playing the Hulk (it's Mark Ruffalo now, barf, instead of Edward Norton).

Agreed. Most of this will be Thor backstory heavy, so seeing it right before The Avengers would be great.

Thor is one of my favorite characters! He's got such a rich backstory in the comics. There's Walt Simonson's classic run, then the more recent J Michael Straczinski run that reintroduced all of the characters after Ragnarok.

But everyone has characters they like or don't like.

Personally, I wish they'd had time to introduce Ant Man and the Wasp so that they could be in this movie instead of Black Widow.

Thanks. That's the one I have on hold. I had heard one of the movies was really bad, I hope it's the Eric Bana Hulk. ;)

First Hulk sucked. 2008 Hulk was ok but not great.

Our favorites in order:

Iron Man 1 (can't beat the sarcastic humor)
Iron Man 2 (not quite as good as the 1st)
Thor (looks fantastic on Bluray)
Captain America (too slow at times to beat out Thor)
Hulk (starts out good but gets worse as it goes)

Calm down, I never said I knew best. I just said "In my opinion." And it does lend it more weight than someone who has only seent he movies. I've actually read all the back stories. I know what's been altered for cinema and what has kept true. That's all I meant.

I would recommend that anyone unfamiliar with the movies definitely watch Thor before the Avengers. I'd personally try to watch Iron Man 1 and 2, Captain America and the Ed Norton Hulk movie as well. Hawkeye is a cameo in Thor but you don't really get any information about him, and Black Widow is definitely more than a brief cameo in Iron Man 2. She's actually a fairly major character in that movie!

I disagree with the bolded. I read the comics and I've watched the movies, and in a discussion about the movies the comics really don't matter. I don't think the opinion of someone who reads the comics carries any more weight than those of the people who just watch the movies, as long as you are just talking about the movies. There are plenty of people who only watch the movies and never touch the comics, and in a discussion of the movies their opinions are just as important as that of the most avid comic collector. Sure, there are major differences between the comics and the movies (and for that matter, there are huge differences between the storylines of some of the different comics) but that doesn't matter at all if you're just watching the movies.

In a discussion about who is a lame character and who is not, being a comic book collector lends no weight to one's OPINION. Simply meaning, just because you think he's lame doesn't make it universally true just because you know more about comics than the lay person. My husband knows way more about music than I do (I call him a music snob) but that doesn't mean that just because he thinks Coldplay is lame, that Coldplay is actually a lame musical group. Plenty of people like them, even people who are music afficionados like DH claims to be.

Also, your assertion that Black Widow had a "small cameo" at the beginning of the movie was just flat out incorrect.

Me personally? I'm a BIG fan of the way RDJ portrays Tony Stark, and I really loved Edward Norton as The Hulk (which is why I'm cheesed about Mark Ruffalo, but I understand that Ed Norton wanted more creative control over the character than Joss Whedon was willing to concede). I even liked the Ang Lee Hulk on many levels. It had its flaws, but overall I liked it.

I really hope Joss has done The Avengers justice. I've been waiting for this movie since I was a kid, wearing my towel cape tied around my neck and running through the backyard playing superheroes with my cousins. We'd spend hours pouring over my cousins comic collection and then head outside to play. My cousin loved superheroes so much that he pursued a career in law enforcement and manages a comic book store on the side. I just wish he didn't live in another state otherwise he and I would be there at opening night together.

As an aside, my very favorite of all superheroes is Rogue from the X-Men. I'm still PISSED of the horrible casting of and subsequent horrible job Anna Pacquin did to that character.

First off her part as an assitant. Is not big. Especially for such a big actress. Almost EVERY single person who has seen Iron man 2 don't even remember her being it. So maybe cameo was a poor choice of words but she isnt a main character.

And NO ONE has seen the avengers movie yet for no one can rightfully say what you need or don't need to know.

As for my comment to thor being a lame character. I never said it was univerally correct. I said "In my opinion" which means that I understand that my OPINION is not the most important thing ever.

HOWEVER, I am a firm believer in the more you know about something the better you can judge it. You can't judge a song by a 10 sec clip and you can't judge a character or story line that has been created, grown, and adjusted for decades on a hour and half movie.

I'm excited for the movie but I actually don't like most marvel comics. I respect them ina certain matter but I always found Thor's character to be lame. I never took much interest in the other characters. Captain America was the only one I thought was worth any salt. But that's my opinion. AGAIN opinion.

I don't know what anyone NEEDs to know going into watch the movie. Infact I'm sure they will do a wonderfull job at catching everyone up on the stories.

I'm not going revoke my opinion. I never said I knew better than anyone else but I do think my knowing more about the character because seen more than the movies DOES in fact hold weight. If we are talking about the charcters than we are talking about the characters. And what happens/doesnt happen to them in the comics is important when you are judging the CHARACTERS. Maybe not when judging the movie.

So again, You guys need to calm down. I never said anyone else was wrong. I gave my opinion. It seems to me that you guys are the ones who are a little closed off to new opinions.

I agree with you particularly when it comes to the horrible portrayal of Rogue. Why did they turn her into Jubilee? I'm also a big Gambit fan and how would he ever have a relationship with this version of Rogue? I guess that it's a good thing that he has never really been used. (Except in the lame Wolverine movie but I won't go there. :furious: )

I used to read comics so does that give me any expertise on the subject of Thor lameness? ;) Whatever, I love the Thor character and think that this portrayal is super. Any others not liking him or any other superheroes means nothing to me.
