    Z is for: Zealous Dining with a Touch of Zen

    I’ve seen several Morimoto reviews lately amongst friends here, so I’ll go ahead and throw my photos and commentary into the proverbial ring as well.

    Morimoto was my trip's inaugural meal. And to cut the suspense, in case you really don’t want to see pictures of stunning décor or mouth-watering food, you can just comment that you enjoyed the first sentences of this update and move on. If, though, you’d like to stick around for a moment or two more, I am pretty sure it’ll be worth your time.

    Let’s begin outside. I arrived while it was still daytime after a dip into Jock’s. Ummm, I kinda love that place. Might very well be my favorite daytime bar on property after the Nomad, but I’ll get to that at some point in the next… while. I got to the Morimoto right on time for my 6:45 ADR because it’s right there by Jock’s. It has a very nice exterior with plenty to draw one in. But I think it’s even prettier at night, so I’ll end with night shot of Morimoto later.

    I got my pager thingy and used the extra time to wander around the place to soak in all of the beautiful detailing. Seriously, so pretty! The Asian art alone is worth a visit. There are at least two gorgeous mosaics that I spent quite some time just admiring.

    The lighting (most of you know, I kinda geek out at the various lighting fixtures around the parks and restaurants) fixtures are pretty amazing in and of themselves. The boxy lights that you see in this photo are on a track that encircle the entire bar area, winds up to the 2nd floor and back around down the staircase and over the reception kiosk area. It’s so cool! Look up when you go there!

    If you want to have a solo dinner, can’t get an ADR (unlikely), or would rather have the vibe of the bar area for your meal, the bar is quite lovely aesthetically.

    There is an area upstairs with additional seating (which may have been quieter than where I was seated) that has another bar, more cool artwork, a great view, and another sushi counter, etc… During busier times and in good weather, there is also outdoor balcony seating if that’s your thing.

    Eventually my pager went off and I was taken to my table very near the open kitchen. The first thing I noticed was that it was pretty loud. A bit much for my taste, and if I’d been with others, it would have been pretty hard to hold a conversation; simply hearing my server when he took my drink order was challenging.

    I started with a cocktail:

    Mango Matcha Punch - green tea vodka, mango and lychee soda garnished with mint & lychee - $14.00

    It was soooo good; very refreshing, sweet but not overly so. I also ordered some edamame to munch on while I looked at the menu a bit more.

    Edamame - sea salt - $6.00

    There’s not much to say about the soybeans. They taste pretty much the same everywhere, whether you pay $2.50 or $6.00, or whether you local teenage kid zaps them in the microwave at your local sushi joint or whether you eat them in Disney and they’re grown in high tech, test gardens that make you ashamed of the hovel your yard is comparatively.

    I wasn’t in a hurry and still getting my Disney mojo on having just gotten inside the Bubble, so perused the offerings and did some pro-level people watching. I wrote a few notes on my laminated trip notebook as I grazed and sipped as well.

    Eventually I ordered since I couldn’t stall forever; it’d been a very long day and I’d need to get to bed at some point. Again, not in a hurry, but didn’t want to close the place down either.


    I finally decided on the:

    Morimoto "Buri-Bop" – Korean-style yellowtail rice bowl, served in a hot clay pot, finished with egg yolk, prepared tableside - $30.00


    The clincher for me was the “prepared tableside”. I’m a sucker for a show. And this did not disappoint.

    Served, as it says, in a hot clay pot, there was a huge portion of rice topped with a few goodies like a bit of seaweed salad, grated raw carrot, maybe a little kimchee?, and a generous serving of seared yellowtail, and a raw egg. The server then carefully stirs it all up and as he does the fish and the egg cook to a delicious perfection. The flavors all blend and seriously, this dish was amazing.

    As I ate, I thoroughly enjoyed watching the action at the open kitchen where chefs and cooks were hustling to serve a full house. Front and center is a display of Chinese duck waiting to be added to one of the several dishes they have featuring duck. One was taken down and carved for some lucky diner. The duck wasn’t so fortunate. Which made him a very unlucky duck.

    Admittedly, it was far too much for me to eat, but many things are when I travel solo so, while it’s a shame, I didn’t finish the majority. But it was very good, and I would recommend it if you like Bim Bap. We have a local place here run by Koreans, and this was easily as good.


    Full to bursting, I paid my bill and bid Morimoto a sated and sleepy goodbye.

    I waddled over to the Boat Ramp to catch my boat to The French Quarter and waited approximately ZERO minutes. The 20-minute ride was very refreshing, and I enjoyed the quiet after such a noisy, bustling, sensory-overloading meal. It was easy to fall into Disney dreams, which I quickly did.

    In retrospect, I would return to Morimoto; I really liked it a lot. But, at the same time, I am not in a rush to do so either. There are many places still on my list and while it had very tasty food (at least what I tried) it didn’t blow me away enough to entice me back on the next trip. I keep hearing good things about Home Comin’ and think the menu will appeal to my kiddos so have a meal planned there for September, as well as my son’s favorite place on property- Raglan Road.

    And that, my friends, was how I spent part of my first day last September.

    Hmmm... maybe, maybe not.
    I was looking at a map for reference. Both angles are almost identical (but one is clockwise, the other is counter-clockwise) but the view from the treehouse overlooks Sunshine Tree Terrace and Skippers.
    But... then again, it's not moving so you have a stable platform to shoot from.

    So, I have never done Astro Orbiter. Simply because (a). the lines are ridiculous or (b). it's down for some unfathomable reason. Maybe I'll finally try it in March!

    I would love to visit there one day. My youngest sister lives in Vancouver (BC not Washington) so maybe next time I am out that way I will head south too.

    Morimoto looks stunning, and I'm sure it was really nice to sit down and take all the details in. Happy to hear the food was just as good as the interior design.

    I loved reading about your Morimoto dinner. Disney Springs is really an amazing dining location with so many interesting places now. I still haven't made it to Morimoto therefore.

    The chandeliers and lights look amazing. Those on the track: were they moving along?

    Your food looked really good! What an interesting concept. Did you get to eat out of the clay bowl or did they give you a plate?

    Awesome! I love that this kinda challenge can provide opportunities for real-live human interaction. There are always exceptions, but most of the people I've met/chatted with on vacation at WDW have been wonderful and friendly. :)

    I'd love to see this someday! Thanks for the museum review.

    I definitely stuck around for the review! I came to it at the same time that I'm trying to decide where we want to eat in DS.

    Good to know! There are so many places I still want to try...

    This is another place I'd like to try someday, but I've been holding off to see if I can bring any gluten back into my diet first. I'll be curious to hear what you think of it!

    A solo dinner is the most likely way I would have to enjoy Morimoto. The ladies in my life are not fans of Asian cuisine, occasionally venturing as far as having some North Americanized fare like chicken balls with cherry sauce, but far from anything authentic.
    It does look like a very pleasing atmosphere.

    Now, despite my admitted aversion to green things, I will let you know that I have eaten edamame before, in fact on more than one occasion. I must also admit it was either from a shared appetizer that someone else had ordered, or as part of a side dish. While I could eat them, I can't say I have ever had a craving for them.

    This reminds me of my days overseas. I would often get a clay pot for lunch, usually with chicken or salmon.
    I appreciate the presentation and flair of table side preparation as well. It does look like a rather huge portion.

    Again, another reminder of my overseas days. Every other Friday our lunch was a Chinese style roast duck from one of the local hawker stalls. Despite the stall's appearance (shamefully, I don't think I ever took a photo), the quality was outstanding and the owner likely perfected that one dish over decades.
    I suspect Morimoto's would carve the duck meat in an American style. One thing I never quite got used to was the Chinese presentation style of meat. Whatever you ordered - chicken, fish, duck - was chopped whole up in slices with a sharp clever. Picture a roast duck in a Styrofoam tray, chopped in slices bones and all from head to toe. The only thing missing was the beak and feet.

    I have heard that Hobbits love parties with fireworks, dance on tables and can fight dragons. Can't say as thought I'd mind that.

    Well yeah! Some bars have really nice views of the outside and some... don't.

    Given your admiration of Japanese Gardens, this too might be right up your alley.

    RIght?! At first I thought it'd be cool to have it move along the track, but then after I thought more, I think it might have just detracted. I like the illusion of movement it gives even more I think.

    I know!! I thought the one at Flying fish was cool; this is even better. :)

    Thanks! I noticed the bar a couple of years ago from the OUTSIDE when I was waiting for my table at Raglan Rd. I knew then that one day I had to go and shoot it.

    I didn't even notice when I took it. Or at least I hadn't remembered. It was surprising when I was editing the photo.

    Yeah, it kinda is. I assumed and thought it would be as well when I made the ADR. Next time, I think I'll ask for upstairs seating.

    I'm pretty sure her review is what swayed my ultimate choice.

    LOL!!! Just gotta make your desires known. As I get older and crotchety, I'm a lot more comfortable saying, "I'd really love to be near the open kitchen." ... and am completely prepared to simply wait.

    I really enjoyed it. I was glad I had a little time to wander around and see more of them than only ones I could see from my table. Really, the place has nice art all over the place. I was pleasantly surprised and I think, of all the restaurants in DTD, this one may have the most extensive menu. It's pages long with a HUGE variety.

    It was fun to write it too! :) DTD is honestly as much fun for me to go to now than the parks. There is live entertainment, often times there are displays (like the Christmas trees), art stores, in addition to the huge variety of places to eat now. It's great!

    They are not, but I kinda like that in an artsy way. It gives the subtle idea of movement without adding the actual movement.

    I think yes, they did give me a plate and I did use it. Although, you could easily use either and it'd be fine. The food in the pot would obviously stay much hotter for a lot longer, so that'd be the advantage of doing that.

    I'm sure of it. I wonder if Disney has ever thought of selling epoxy coated "nuggets of a different color" as $50 souvenirs.

    I got several this trip! The best ones are coming up from my EPCOT Scavenger Hunt; you will LOVE IT!

    And it's a great place to go solo. :) Lots to see.

    But, I would add, the menu is extremely extensive- one of the most on property even. I'd think there'd be lots for them, as less adventurous eaters, to choose from.

    They're a great starter; not too filling, salty, and easy for nibbling on before dinner with a drink.

    I don't crave them, but will choose them if an option if I plan on ordering a bigger meal.

    It was fun. I didn't know they did clay pots in other places outside or Korea! Neat!

    OH!!! I should have mentioned! They did use a cleaver to at least get the head off, after that, I'm not sure. I didn't see it presented so can't speak to the bone-in vs. boned version, but IMHO, bone in is something I'm very used to. Brings back many memories of Crapistan.

    For sure! I didn't have a zero wait every time that last trip, but it sure beats the bus!
