The 2010 NHL Playoffs Thread

I thought the commentators on Vs. are total Hawks fans.. I even thought they should be wearing their Jersey's. Myself, I like to listen to the local radio announcers while watching games. I love the home team feel!

And about that party for the Hawks at the Beach Club?!?!?......:lmao:

I wish CSN would carry the finals so I could hear Jim Jackson. He does play-by-play like no other. :thumbsup2

Question for any of you. I've always wondered about the playing of God Bless America instead of the Star Spangled Banner. Are they both considered national anthems?

I've never heard it played by itself -- usually they follow with the national anthem. GO HAWKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

God Bless America has been the song of choice for Flyers Playoffs because of Kate Smith being added in. During the regular season, Lauren sings our National Anthem. It is a tradition/honor thing.

Personally, I like how the Hawks had the service people on the ice during the Anthem. classy!:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

During the broadcasts I watched when they played the Habs, I only heard the Canadian National Anthem and God Bless America.

I heard on Chicago Sports Radio this morning...Kate Smith started to sing God Bless America in 1974 playoffs (game 6 of a series) due to the fear of the backlash vs. the National Anthem due to the Vietnam War.

Anthony Gargano from your sports radio WIP, has been on WSCR Sports radio here this week. He stated the above.

Is this true ?

I honestly do not know if it is true, but it sounds like something that would have happened in the 70's.:hippie: I will try and do some trivia research and poll my know it all Flyers fans.

Can you believe this Series? :cloud9: I mean another 1 goal game.. the series tied..leaving us to the best of 3? This is awsome! My only fear is that if the Flyers only win at home.. well... ya know...

Great job last night Flyers. I was able to catch the last period after the dinner party. Can't wait till Sunday. I'm going to be glued to my TV..

Let's go Flyers:cheer2::woohoo:

Congrats to the Flyers !!!:thumbsup2

Being in Chicago and being a sportsradio junkie...here are a few things being discussed....

1. Hawks UNDERESTIMATED the Flyers. (I agree)

2. Pronger is getting away with a few "whacks" that would be penalties in the 1st month of the season...AND I think the Hawks are also.

3. Way too many penalties being called on the Hawks. Conspiracy theory is now in place.

For all you Chicagoans....remember back in the Jordan / Bulls heyday. The Bulls were ALWAYS the superior teams once they got to the finals. HOWEVER, 5 of their 6 championships went 6 games.

NBC TV was the broacdcast network during that time. THE only way these networks make money is IF a series goes at least 6 games.

This series is NOW gauranteed to be 6 games.

When the Hawks got a late 5 on 3 PP in the 3rd period last night, it was a BS call on the Flyers almost like a "courtesy" call to give the Hawks a 5-3 PP.

4. Flyers are bigger and stronger than the Hawks young guns. Particularly Toews and Kane.

5. The Cubs jinx has now infested Madison Street. John McDonough was the Cubs president in 2003...and who do you think is the Hawks President now ??

6. Buff has realized he is an AVERAGE player at best.

These are just a few things of what is being talked about on sports radio here in Chicago. I kinda agree with most BUT they are no excuse.

I think there is something to it. Bettman was on Chicago radio Friday and just was spewing all over himself about how this series has the makings of being a Stanley Cup Finals Classic.

(Things that make you go.....hmmmmm!!! )

My opinion now is this....IF the Hawks win game #5 at home Sunday night, the Flyers will win game #6 Weds. (it will be a "homer" series)

BUT..anythings goes in game #7.

If the Flyers win Game #5 Sunday Night....the series is over Wednesday.

What are the directions to Broad Street for the parade ??:scared1::scared1:

One more thing that was just brought up on the Score here in Chicago...Toews has potentially cracked rib suffered in game #4 vs. Sharks.

It's a shame that the networks dictate how these series are played out. :sad2: $$$ rules everything.

The Hawks top line has not scored in 3 straight games. This series could go to the full 7 to raise the cup. I give Pronger full credit for his leadership.

>>It's a shame that the networks dictate how these series are played out. $$$ rules everything.<<

NBC does not pay one dime to air the NHL on the network. The folks in Montreal were upset that the Flyers/Habs game aired at 3:00 on a Sat, not the 7:00 start that Canada is used to. The deal with Vs. runs out in the 2010-2011 season. ESPN may come to the table.

I think by now, those who have been following this thread realize that although I am a Hawks partial season ticket holder....I AM A HOCKEY FAN and I really do enjoy talking hockey with the slight mix in of "friendly fire" trash talk.

BUT...I hope you guys dont think I am crying "sour grapes" about what I think is happening in this series with my "conspiracy" theories.

BUT...the things I said really make you think twice.

Trust me, those in Chicago should be agreeing with me about what I said about the Bulls run in the 90's with the games on NBC.

Perfect example was in 1993 when the Bulls went to Phoenix and beat them in the 1st two games away in the finals. Games 3, 4 & 5 were at the old Chi. Stadium. Out of nowhere, Phoenix all of a sudden wins 2 of the 3 games in Chicago to get the series back to Phoenix for a game 6. Hmmmmm.

A famous quote at the time from Charkes Barkley, when he played for the Suns at the time, "we saved the City of Chicago and won 2 games to get the series back to Phoenix."

This series really could be 3-1 each way or already over each way. Thats how tight it really is.

Also, NBC may not pay a "rights fee" to televise...BUT they share revenues. The more games...the more revenue. NBC would NOT want to waste their time if they were not going to make a substantial amount of money.

The "fish" stinks from the head on down on this one.

I agree with your 90's Bulls theories. My buddies and I would usually figure it out mid-way through the 1st quarter of the game that NBC/Stern wanted the other team winning. Those Jordan-led 90's Bulls teams would usually sweep teams prior to the finals, and then the "right" refs would be assigned to certain games in the finals to slow down the Bulls and elongate the series. Makes you wonder if Tim Donaghy is the Jose Canseco of his era/genre (i.e. game-fixing in the NBA vs steroid scandal in MLB).

After reading your reply it made me think about another "theory" Post-jordan in 1995. Remember the "Phantom" foul by Hugh Hollins on Scottie Pippen in , I think game 5, AT NEW YORK / MSG ?

If Bulls won that game they go home for game #6. That was the 1st year after Jordan retired for 2 years. NBC didnt want the Bulls in it because there was NO MJ.

NBC wanted Ewing and that NY market in the finals that year.

As far as the Finals between Hawks and Flyers...
Chicago and Philadelphia are 2 of the top 6 US television markets. Enough said. Im not saying..im just saying.

The interview done with Bettman the other day when asked about the Stanley Cup Finals and TV....you would have thought a Hooters Waitress with a bust size 44DD just appeared before his eyes. He was so overjoyed knowing this series was going to be at least 6 games.

That Hue Hollins call was atrocious. If I remember correctly Hugh Davis, a scrub SG for the Knicks, threw up a brick over the out-stretched arm of Pippen. Pippen did not even touch Davis. Yet Hollins put Davis on the line for three free throws. No self-respecting ref would have called a foul on a superstar (Pippen) against a scrub (Davis) in the last seconds of a game even if there was an actual foul committed. In this case, there wasn't even a foul. It was so obvious that Stern had mandated that the Knicks would win the series. The fix was definitely on.

What a way to put a poo-poo in the cup train.. no matter who wins. I am going to chose to believe that the fans have been the winning factor, along with heart in the last 4 games. Why am I chosing to believe this? Because the other option is dis-heartening, and kind of makes the whole cup thing and season meaningless. So, because I cannot change any Network conspiracy actions going on, or any referring in which I think the ref's have their heads up their butts, I am going to put my head in the sand and pretend it really is just good hockey.

Let' the best team win (no matter what the net-works want).. and most of all..

Let's Go Flyers!:cheer2::woohoo:

See you all on the boards in the AM.
