The 2010 NHL Playoffs Thread

A

Another question for you Flyer fans...."why is the Flyer fans so "obnoxious". ? I actually know a few people who were there for games 3 & 4 and them fans give the Flyers fan base a bad impression.

Is it the New York / Boston complex they are trying to keep up with ? I have heard the same about the Eagle fans too.

I think at some point in peoples lives you would think they would grow up.

The above comments ARE NOT directed at any of the posters on here. I am just asking general questions as to why the fans are as "obnoxious" as they appear to be.

All teams have fans like that. Hopefully, the vast majority are respectful to the other team and fans.

There was a funny story though from the Habs/Flyers series. Apparently 2 Flyers fans were giving a couple of French reporters or fans (don't remember which) a hard time about being French. The entire time they were doing this, they were wearing Daniel Briere and Simon Gagner jerseys (both French Canadians from Quebec).

Again...well said.

All I did was ask a question because I heard it from 3 friends of mine who witnessed it 1st hand. Then all of a sudden a poster wanted to turn it into a Chicago vs. Philadelphia thing. Im too old, and I hope too mature, to get into a battle of words on the internet. Maybe I should have just IGNORED her. Oh well...

Anyways, game 6 has the makings of being a classic. Any word from your neck of the woods on who is starting yet ? Personally, I think its Leighton. He really has a good home record for you guys in the playoffs.

As far as series MVP's goes....I think you can eliminate both goalies. Neither one has played particulary well. "IF" the Flyers win it ...I think its Briere (hope I spelled that right). Pronger kind of took himself out of the running with a horrible game 5....and "WHEN" :thumbsup2 the Hawks win it...I think its Duncan Keith. He has been a rock back on D. Buff possible IF he has another game like he did in game 5.

But you must admit... your post wasn't very nice. What were you trying to do if not start something??? But I'm done. So respond or not. You are not important enough to me to care one way or another.

Kate Smith-God Bless America..Here is what I found on several sights. Nothing mentions the war specifially, but they do mention Kate singing it because it got a better reaction from the crowd (read into that what you will), and that the Flyers have an awsome record when it is played.. something like 80+ wins to 20+ losses (to date). The Flyers actually made a statue of her, and consider her their lucky rabbits foot. If the Flyers play like they did the last game, they are going to need the whole dang rabbing, not just the foot. Also..the Flyers only play it during "special" games. I guess they don't want the luck to run out! :rotfl:

Here is a snipet of one of the articles.

On December 11th, 1969 when Flyers vice president Lou Schienfield ordered the playing of Kate Smith's "God Bless America" in place of "The Star Spangled Banner". He tested several Patriotic songs in an empty arena earlier and it was Kate's song that sounded the best. This was a day when American patriotism was at an all time low and to spark fans that had appear to be disinterested earlier during the playing of the national anthem, a different song was played. There were several angry comments during that first playing, but a Flyers 6-3 win over Toronto changed their tune as well. The Flyers lost their next home game without Kate, but the subsequent home game and Kate's song resulted in another win - and the legend started.

It was up to Lou Schienfield to choose which games to play Kate. Generally it was a game by game decision - with Lou deciding on instinct or if the game was important. The first 3 years saw an incredible difference in the home records - 19-1-1 with Kate and a losing 31-38-28 record without Kate (including playoffs)

Kate's first live performance was the home opener of the 1973-74 season. Fortunately for the Flyers, Kate's 88-year-old uncle was sending Kate newspaper clippings detailing her growing relationship for the Flyers. For $ 5,000 she agreed to play live. When the red carpet rolled out , Leaf's goaltender Doug Favell - who had played all of the previous seasons for the Flyers in their franchise history, knew his new team was in trouble. If his teammates didn't fully appreciate her influence, he did. The Flyers ended up winning 2-0. It didn't take too long for other players on other teams to realize what it meant when "God Bless America" was played before a game. When the Flyers eventually made the finals and Kate played live before game 6 of the finals, Boston stars Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito tried to reverse the jinx by shaking Kate's hand and giving her flowers - it didn't work and the Flyers won the cup.

As far as the starting Goalie, I have not heard. If it is not Leighton, I will be really disappointed. Not that I think the Goalie is the whole team, but that man has stood on his head to get us this far..and in my opinion, he deserves the shot to take us all the way!
Let's go Flyers!:woohoo::cheer2:

I'm hoping it's Leighton too. I do remember that Kate Smith was afraid that people would make fun of her if she sang live. But the fans took her to their hearts and she's still there all these years later. And now we have the lovely Lauren Hart singing too. I always loved her dad Gene. And still miss his voice during the games.

Go Flyers!!! We are proud of you!!!

Even seeing and hearing Kate on a recording still gives me the goosebumps every time.

Win or lose, hearing Kate sing before a Flyers game is right up there with America and Apple Pie.

Trust me...the feeling is quite mutual.

I hope Leighton starts as I believe that he gets rattled easier than the veteran Boucher.

Leighton doesn't get rattled easier (in my opinion).. I think Boucher does. He thinks he is so good, that once a goal gets past him, he gets mad, disappointed in himself, and I think at times he is unable to regain his composure. In any event, I am glad that Leighton is getting the nod. He deserves the shot at glory.

If anyone is going to the game tonight, the Phillies and the Flyers are playing (their stadiums are right next to each other for those who do not know). Traffic is going to be a NIGHTMARE. Between all the tailgaiting for both events, and the fact they will be over approx. the same time (barring OT in either game)..it is going to be a long night for anyone trying to leave. You may want to bring a pillow and sleep a few hours in the car before trying to leave.

Let's Go Flyers!!!:woohoo::cheer2::woohoo::cheer2: GAME 6..Bring it!

Wow.. it is quiet in here today..

*drops pin...hears it echo*... Everyone too excited/nervous to post?:rotfl:

Just kind of going through the day. Haven't put a lot of thought into it. Win or lose, for the Flyers, I'm still happy because today is the start of a great run of sports for me! Flyers vs. Hawks tonight, Philadelphia Union vs. KC Wizards (Soccer) tomorrow night, and then the World Cup kicks off on Friday! :thumbsup2

Damn.. Now I see where Davy Jones got his "There were no Survivors" Line...

By the way.. You are not winning it in my house.. no way..no how...:thumbsup2

Guess some Hawks fans are only nice while they are in their own arena. Guess they don't feel like they have to play nice on line. :confused3 Time will tell. But I just want to say that I am proud of my Flyers tonight and always!!!!!

Nancy :goodvibes

Not much for me to root for this year. The Flames (my #1 team) missed out on the post-season, and, locally, the Flyers are going to be once and done.

Seeing as I love to see a Canadian team hoisting the Cup, I'll secretly be pulling for the Canucks, Sens, and the Habs.

Would you like to rephrase your response to Let's go Flyers!!!????:lmao:

I make no bones about how "Philly" I truly am when it comes to our home teams, expect the "usual" and enjoy anything that comes our way beyond that. The Flyers showed me nothing the whole season, a first round exit at the hands of the Devils was more than a reasonable expectation.

That being said, I will be rooting for them tonight. If only to upset those "classy" Chicagoans. :rolleyes1

That's how I feel. Nobody thought they'd get this far. So this is all gravy!!! I'm still rooting for them to win. I believe they can. Will they... time will tell? But either way... what a ride!!! I'm sure that the fans from all those other teams thought they had us beat too. SURPRISE!!! LOL

Nancy :cheer2:

Been waiting to see these my whole life (18 years). Chicago has been waiting for this for 49 years. ITS GO TIME HAWKS. THIS WILL BE THE YEAR.

I get all teary eyed and the chills just thinking about it.

Its been 49 years since the Hawks skated with the cup in 1961. The Flyers goalie wears number 49.....hmmmmm

The stars are lined up !!!!!!!!!!!!

LETS GO HAWKS !!! LETS GO HAWKS !!! LETS GO HAWKS !!!

WE GOT 2 GAMES TO MAKE THAT ONE GOAL COME TRUE.
