The 17 Day Diet and Dukan Diet

Wow...that's a ton of carbs for one meal!..... ( 60 - 70 carbs )... emphasis mine...

Good luck!

A lot if you are trying to stay low carb, sure, but not that many for those who aren't.... a roll by itself can be 50+ carbs. A bagel shop bagel is about 90 carbs. Even 2 slices of bread is 35 - 40 carbs.

I try to keep a limit on white foods.... rice, bread, pasta.... as a diabetic, my doctor said to me "The whiter the bread, the sooner you're dead."

I'm down about 25 pounds in 6 months, but it would be a lot more if I watched what I ate. Fortunately, my new house has plenty of room for a home gym and I already set mine up... I hope to start using it next week, as I am still unpacking from the move.

Congratulations! Enjoy your workout room. Our workout stuff is in the basement and we love it.

I started entering my food in Sparks People and stay within my calorie range. I'm starting to exercise again today too.

I used to love the George Stella show! I was thinking of getting one of his cookbooks, glad to hear you love them!
:thumbsup2 I also have a couple of DVDs of his, and back when Low Carb and Loving It was on, I recorded a few episodes on DVDs. I have to re-watch them. And talking about him reminded me that he spends Mother's Day at a restaurant near me!

As someone who's lost 50lbs over the last year and kept it off I'd recommend against any type of fad diet like this. You can't keep them up. You have to adapt your eating habits to something you can do for a lifetime. It's not about always avoiding specific foods. I would recommend seeing a nutritionist who could help you pick good foods you like and to drop ones that are not worth the calories.

I pretty much eat what I want but in smaller portions. I realized I was eating 50%-100% beyond what I needed to avoid being hungry at most meals. Once I did that the weight just fell off. It's all about higher protein and lower carbs. By the way, yogurt is relatively high in protein and not too fattening if you eat non-fat.

I have adapted my eating habits to a lifestyle I can live with.

I discovered that eating excessive carbs literally makes me sick. It's nice to eat food that I enjoy while feeling good and losing weight. I haven't eaten the "wrong" carbs on a regular basis for over a year now and I'm not looking back.

The 17 day diet is a low carb eating lifestyle with a heavy emphasis on nutrition. It's only restrictive when you're in the losing weight mode. It won't be so much when you reach the right weight even though there are still certain things you can't eat to excess. Things like fat and carbs and refined sugar.

Right now I'm eating carrots. I like carrots and I missed them when I was on Atkins. It works for me to eat yogurt and most fresh veggies and FRUIT! I just about melted when I ate my first bowl of strawberries.

As someone said, not everything works for everyone.

I've read "This is why you're fat" and "Master your Metabolism" They have worked for me. I did it more for a lifestyle change than a diet. The upside to it was, I lost 18 lbs. My husband has lost 40. He really needed to lose weight.

We have have maintained our weight and feel a world better than we ever did. What we did was cut out processed foods and went to a whole diet. I don't count calories, carbs or anything. I eat every 4 hours.

How is it going?
keep us posted,

Well gee I actually made it through another day pretty easily. :thumbsup2

What's up with that? Maybe I was just ready to finally stick to a plan?

I did notice previously that certain foods "triggered" me, and after eating them I just couldn't stop eating (and eating and eating) the rest of the day - maybe since I'm not having those it seems easier because there's no cravings? Whatever it is I'm going to keep plugging along on this plan :goodvibes

For anyone interested, here is the actual recipe for the pancake if they would like to try it ;)

1 egg white or 3tbsp 100% egg whites- whisk until fluffy

Mix 2tbsp FF Greek yogurt, 1.5 tbsp 100% oat bran, sweetener (optional, but doesn't make it too sweet)

Stir mixture into egg whites then pour in pan 5 mins each side. Found that not preheating pan does best start on 4-5 med heat until edges start to brown then flip and turn down to 1-2 low heat for the other side.

nutrition breakdown:
Total=
85 calories
0.75 fat
8.375 carbs
10.625 protein

Its actually really good, and can be eaten at any point in the day. To change it up I spread Fat free cream cheese (allowed) on it as well :lovestruc

Thinking about it maybe it's these that have saved me from the dreaded M &M splurges. Feels like you're cheating, but they're allowed - wow! :cutie:

I noticed the recipe on the Kindle edition calls for 2 TBS oat bran? :confused3 I don't know why it would be different?

Dukan Oat Bran Galette
1 egg white
2 TBS oat bran
2 TBS FF plain Greek yogurt
1 TSP Splenda (I use one individual packet of Stevia)

In small bowl beat egg white until foamy. In separate bowl combine oat bran, Greek yogurt, and splenda. Add egg white and mix.

(Cook same as recipe above)

Says you can eat for breakfast or lunch with some sliced ham or turkey or late afteroon or before bed. And that you can have up to 3 but no more than 3 per day.

I do have to mention that these are small! The first one I made I thought it had to be a mistake - only 2 TBSP, 1 TSP? I'm used to recipes with 2 CUPS :) - but it actually they are filling, must be the oat bran.

My mom is now on the bandwagon as well so my dad ordered us both the books, that way I don't have to call my sis and say I'm done phase 1 what do I do now lol. I'll let you know when I get the book if there is the same discrepancy, she just mentioned once your in phase think 3 you go up to 3tbsp of oatbran. Are you using egg whites from a carton or 1 egg white from an actual egg? My pancakes are actually fairly large when using a big pan but might be since the egg whites from a carton measure to 1/4 cup and my mom measured an egg and it was only 1/8 cup. Might make the difference in sizes....for me, bigger is better

ohh just noticed you said you can have 3 pancakes a day??? She didnt tell me that one so I've been only having 1. Cant wait to get my book :cloud9:

Down 9.6lbs in 10 days :cheer2:

I just found you guys! I started the 17 day diet this past Monday. I am down 6 pounds in 4 days! I have never done that before. I am not drinking the lemon water in the morning. I just can't stomach that but I am sticking to the rest of the plan! Good luck to all those that are trying this. :thumbsup2

Started Dukan Diet today. Got my book last week after reading this thread. I am excited hope it works. Always did WW in past but new plan with the points plus was not working for me. Would love to hear others results and what you are eating.

I started Dukan today! I am about to try the oat bran recipe.
I downloaded the Nook version. I was motivated last night to start today, so I didn't want to wait for the book itself to arrive! and our library has so many holds on it that I may not see it for awhile!
I like some of the recipes in the book, they sound good and like they will spice things up. I am un creative when it comes to cooking, I need a lot of ideas:rotfl:

Keep in mind that some of that initial weight is water weight. However as the author says you have to lose that too so it's all good. :)

ok, I didn't plan accordingly and I had no plain yogurt in the house for the recipe, so I substituted milk, so it was more like an oat bran and egg white omelet than a pancake! didn't taste too bad, I could see this being ok, if I follow the recipe correctly next time, I will use this as breakfast I think.
but don't sub milk for the yogurt!

Make sure you get Greek nonfat yogurt... need the extra protein.

Also get your water in... the loosing the water weight the first week can be dehydrating if you don't. My favorite thing to eat right now is shrimp with any seasoning I can find that doesn't contain salt. Ms. Dash makes great blends and I love throwing in curry powder in almost everything.

good ideas :thumbsup2
I love curry, I wonder if I could do a yogurt/curry sauce for chicken?
might be good

I love curry too! Ive actually tried tossing in a spoonful of greek yogurt in my curry chix, wasn't terrible but nice change and doable. I really hate greek yogurt except for the pancakes which I look forward to every morning.

how are you doing?
I started yesterday, and I had a horrible headache all day, and hunger pangs no matter what I ate!!!!
I plowed thru though and today I feel much better, headache gone, and no hunger pangs.......yet.........LOL
the headache may have just been coincidence and not related to the diet but it was a bear of a headache!

anyway, so far today is going good. I do need to get to the store later to stock the house with allowed foods

Try looking at these for other recipes for the first cycle. http://recipes.sparkpeople.com/cookbooks.asp?cookbook=344690

You can also google 17 day diet recipes and get lots of sites.

I did do this for a week, real well!. Lost 4 lbs in 2 days and then more. It does help you think before you eat and help you figure what is best to be putting in your mouth.

thanks for the links :thumbsup2
