Very true, but the WWI numbers normally do not include civilians; those numbers are generally understood to represent personnel battle casualties only, which was what was being discussed. Civilian casualties are certainly no less tragic, probably more so, of course. The civilian casualties in the Iraq war are also running high, but we seldom hear those numbers here for some reason; the more conservative estimates say that about 10,000 civilians have been killed in Iraq.
