Thanksgiving is almost only a week away. What foods are you looking forward to the most?

I'm most looking foward to pumpkin pie, pecan pie, sweet potatoes, and stuffing.

I am making a cherry cheesecake this year and I am so ready for it! I LOVE cheesecake, but rarely make it because of the calories.

Hmmm. I think the pumpkin pie. I love the stuff. Most of the other food I make other times during the year anyhow. Even the turkey. I usually buy one while they are really cheap and freeze it for Feb. or March or so.

What I am NOT looking forward to is watching my daughter (who is severely allergic to eggs) try to kill herself with devilled eggs. She does really good most of the year, but at Easter and Thanksgiving she goes a little psycho and can't keep her hands off the devilled eggs. She's an adult so...not much I can do but cringe and tell her she's going to be sorry.
.

I was thinking of making a cream of crab soup as a starter, followed by a salad with walnuts, goat cheese and dried cranberries; turkey, gravy, chestnut stuffing, skillet sweet potatoes (a recipe I adapted from a cookbook - it has pineapple, pecans and a dash of brandy), green beans and either Brussels sprouts (roasted) or broccoli; dessert will be a pumpkin and praline pie.

Turkey, cornbread stuffing, sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie.

My SIL, however, is never allowed to make the sweet potatoes though. One year, probably 8 or 9 years ago now, my MIL had the sweet potatoes in the oven and she asked my SIL to take them out so she could put marshmellows on top. MIL hands SIL an entire bag of mini-marshmellows and tells her to put some on and put it back in the oven so they can get all melty-toasty. SIL dumps the WHOLE BAG:rotfl: on top of the taters and sticks it back in. A few moments later, we smell a burnt sugar smell and it turns out the marshmellows had expanded so much they were stuck to the heating element in the top of the oven and burning.:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: They also melted over the sides of the dish and were starting to pool at the bottom of the oven. :rotfl:

How exactly do you do your Brussels sprouts? I don't like them but my husband insists they are traditional for holidays so I make them for him. My daughter loves them too. Anyhow...just wondered if you had something going on that I might steal, and maybe I'll even actually like them.

My cornbread dressing with gravy! :cloud9: That's really all I need, although its definitely not all I'll end up eating.;)

Every year my family has

Crabmeat dip
corn bread
Turkey
veggies
stuffing
mashed potatoes
then we have
Mrs Smiths Apple pie
and my SIL makes a chocolate puddin cake that is to die for

So needless to say I pick all day

Not the person you asked, but I roast my Brussel Sprouts. Parboil them 4-7 minutes in salted water, let cool, slice in half, place on a cookie sheet that has a couple tablespoons olive oil, salt them, roll them around so they have oil and salt, then arrange cut side down...let roast at 425 for about 20 minutes.

I cook dinner for our immediate family 1st and then we celebrate with dessert at the family(ies) homes later visiting.

At home the most looked forward to items will be:
cornbread stuffing
chocolate pudding pie
homemade cranberry sauce
I'll probably throw a Mrs. Smiths Cinabon Apple Pie in the oven because I would rather fruit pie over the other pie - I don't really care for chocolate pudding or chocolate anything for that matter.

Visiting I'll bring a homemade cheesecake and enjoy my grandma's desserts as well.

I had gastric bypass surgery on 10/14. Thanksgiving week is when I advance to a stage 5 diet, where I can eat more than just protein. I am sooo very much looking forward to mash pototaoes, butternut squash, and green beans. All covered in low fat gravy!

I'm looking forward to everything but the vegetables, but even those are okay with enough gravy on them ;)

These green beans are so much better than those mushy green bean casseroles. Seems like so many Thanksgiving foods are on the mushy spectrum. Kids may not like these, but they are a nice change for adults:

Green Beans with Mushrooms and Bacon

Yield: about 6 servings

6 slices bacon
1 pound green beans, stems removed
1 pound medium-sized mushrooms, each cut into quarters
1 large red onion, sliced
1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons cider vinegar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon crushed red pepper

In a 12-inch skillet over medium-low heat, cook bacon until crisp; remove to paper towels to drain

To bacon drippings remaining in skillet over medium heat, add whole green beans, mushrooms, onion, water, vinegar, salt, and crushed red pepper; cover skillet and cook, stirring occasionally, until vegetables are tender, about 20 minutes.

To serve, spoon bean mixture into bowl. Crumble bacon and sprinkle over beans.

Are you doing a whole seated dinner with seperate courses? It sounds like a lot, but really good. Can I come to your house?

We always do buffet style, just easier for us, and we have a few picky eaters in our family who won't eat anything but turkey and mashed potatoes. So the buffet-style is better for that as well.

Teppanaki Shrimp & Chicken with Fried Rice
I'd rather have shrimp and chicken then turkey. That sounds really good.

Something else I'm really looking foward to is a casserole I make from leftover stuffing and turkey. It's super yummy and easy.

Good luck to you and enjoy your dinner!

My best friend is considering having this done too.
