Terry's Marathon training thread (Comments welcome)

I decided we are going for the Put the Tree Away Assembled plan and guess what? It won't fit down the stairs! LOL! Oh well. It was a thought and now I know it won't work.

I spent sometime this morning checking out Target clearance deals (holiday stuff is 75% off now) and found some items for Jessie's classroom store. Containers of Legos - 99 cents. Stuff by Hilary Duff nailpolish sets - $1.24. Small metal lunchboxes filled with sour gummies - 99 cents. I also found some fleece throw blankets for $1.99. I bought several cream ones. I use them in a basket for the teacher's Christmas present. Add some microwave popcorn, a movie box of candy and a Hollywood video gift card - done! Pretty nice gift for under $15!

LOL, stick the tree in the closet :rotfl: if it won't fit down the stairs!!!

What a great gift idea. You are just way too on the ball!!!!!!!!

Have a safe and fun trip! Good luck to you and all of the WISHers at the marathon and the 1/2 too!

I hope to have read your journal before you get back (a mini-goal)...

Terry,

Cna't wait to hear how you do! I am sure it will be a blast!

Terry, the only regret from my weekend at the half-marathon is that I never got to meet you! :( Somehow we missed each other. I hope all went well during the big race and that you're cherishing that Donald medal! :sunny:

Hi Terry! I am so sorry we missed each other. We need to plan a meet here in St. Louis to compare war stories ;)

~Amanda

Doreen and Amanda, I am sorry I missed both of you as well. It looks like you were further up in the corrals. I saw Team Canada (Debbie, MaryLiz, Susan and Nancy) as well as Kim, Christy, Judy, Renee, Karen, TigerLily, Dawn and some others in our corral. Those green scarves from Dawn really helped spot people!

Amanda - a STL meet sounds like fun to me!! :jumping4:

for me to post about the marathon.... For those of you who haven't jumped over to the WISH boards, here is a copy and paste of my post...

Hello WISHers!
We returned Monday evening from our weekend at WDW but I haven't wanted to post until now. I guess I am still dealing with my feelings about the Half. I was one of the WISHers caught past the 10 mile mark.

I was surprised by how things were organized as well. I think the event could benefit from a staggered start from each corral, with a pause between each one being released, in order to help with congestion. It took us 17 minutes to get to the start line. Those 17 minutes cost us the opportunity to pass through Magic Kingdom, see the characters, get a finish line photo. I am still very sad and disappointed about this.

We were caught in the mess in Epcot where the poor gentleman suffered a heart attack. There were 3 medics working on him and the ambulance was rapidly approaching, but we later heard he didn't make it. (This has not been verified however!) The area this happened was in Epcot, after you leave World Showcase and head towards the road. There is the merge of the Half and the Full and then a tight area with a very small grassy median in the middle of the walkway. The man was in the grassy area.

I am a slower starter (but did the first mile too fast) but got to a 15 minute mile pace by the end of mile 4. We had a 13 min mile, an 18 min mile, then 15-16 min miles. I was cooking at 15 min miles as we hit mile 7 on.... Even that late into the race, we were weaving in and out of people moving ahead. We passed Karen (Karebear) before the 9 mile marker.

We hit the 10 mile marker at 8:50 am - add our 17 minutes of time from the beginning and we had 57 minutes to finish. We were at the very front of the people getting stopped. In fact, one lady bolted and just ran off. We should have followed instead of stopping to listen. We thought perhaps a train was coming. We were SURROUNDED by Team In Training people, Training to End Stroke people, as well as many others. There were a lot of coaches caught as well -- all believing we were on pace. (I still know I was!) We were told we could NOT continue because GUESTS were preparing to enter the park and there wasn't room for us.

After a lot of discussion by the coaches, they were going to send up back 3 miles so we could finish by retracing. Nope - they had already cleared those areas and there were quite a few Full marathoners. The coaches are still talking with the Disney people. A Training to End Stroke coach kept passing through the crowd, telling her people to keep moving because we WOULD be allowed to finish. Finally a 'big wig' guy arrives - says he is sorry for the mistake. We will be taken to the finish line and will get our medals. Water is distributed by the sheriffs present.

After a very unreasonable amount of time, 1 bus arrived (for 300+ people). Again, it was obvious that this was not a planned sweep spot. We had passed the buses at 10K and the 9 mile mark. As a group, we felt we weren't being credited for the time it took to cross the start line. I do not know what happened to those who went on the bus. The gates were reopened and we were told to walk to the monorail. Get to the monorail - they have no idea why ALL of these people are trying to get on the Express Monorail to the TTC. Finally we get to load. (Being at the front of the crowd at the gate and walking, DSis and I rode in the front with the driver.)

We arrive at the TTC and are told just to walk to the Finish area. Get to the Finish area and are told we are not allowed in the Finish area!! Go to Information - told they don't have the medals - why are you here? Finally we are allowed to walk to the Finish area where the food/drinks are. We received our medals, chips are removed. We have to run to catch the buses with our belongings from this morning. As we are heading back towards the buses to take us to Epcot to the resorts, one of the volunteers tells us we better hurry or the bus will just leave us there. Okay - that comment had me steaming! Like we hadn't been "hurrying" all morning!

Once on the bus, one of the fellow half participants (it was her 3rd Disney marathon - she claimed she will never set foot on Disney property again after this, and is a Florida resident) noted that according to her monitor we had walked 16+ miles. It was after 11 am.

Again, it has taken me a while to be able to post about this because I am SO disappointed. I *did* train long and hard for this event. Even though I was on pace, I was not allowed to finish. My medal feels tainted and I don't have a whole lot of pride in wearing/displaying it. I am sad. I doubt I will ever be back for the marathon.

On the other hand, we had a great weekend at WDW! I got to meet several WISHers, which was great! Tower of Terror still rocks! Magic Kingdom is still a magical place. Pop Century was much better than I expected!

Well, that's my story....

So, as you can see, the marathon wasn't quite what I had hoped for. I am discouraged and disappointed in how things were handled. A refund of $$ won't help. A medal doesn't help. I wanted to cross that finish line to prove I could do it!

The heat and humidity were very hard on me. I know that didn't help things, but my sister and I were doing a good job of watching our watches and making sure we were on pace, once we crossed the start line. My biggest tip to ANYONE thinking of going to the WDW marathon. PUT THE EARLIEST Finish time you can without having to prove it. That would move you up in the corral assignments - getting you closer to the start line. Those minutes would have made the difference between us entering MK and finishing, and getting stopped. We both put the last time because we felt it was the most accurate and fairest. We should have gone with fastest time available and too bad for the people behind us.

Obviously I still have some resentment to work through! :teeth: :charac2:

Life continues as normal now. Monday night we arrived back in STL to some REALLLLLLY cold temps. I had to get my shot on Monday night and it was easily the worst injection ever. I don't think those overworked muscles were too happy something entering the area. I did walk for 30 minutes afterways to help with the side effects. I feel great now, except for some soreness in my hip. Not quite sure what I did, but I have been icing the area.

I am giving myself this week to figure out a plan for the year. I have a followup visit with my MS doctor on Friday, then Monday I will start back to exercising and start my way of eating plan.

 , and more  Terry! I guess because it is Disney, I just don't expect to read about this kind of stuff. They are supposed to be at the forefront of Customer Service. IMHO, this leaves a very big black stain. Shame on all of them. And if you don't send this report to Guest Relations, I hope someone else does. They should hang their heads in shame.

Terry, I am SO very proud of you. You overcame a lot to accomplish your goal, and I think you did accomplish it!! :jumping4: I can understand why you feel your medal is tainted, but you earned it sweetie!!! :cheer2: Be proud of yourself and ashamed of whoever made this crazy decision to not let so many finish. I do think Disney owes a bunch of you a sincere apology.

Welcome back Terry! We are really glad to see you back on the boards! Have a great day! :flower1:

Terry,
I have tears on my cheeks for you and the others caught in that confusion. I am so angry they did that to you. You really should send a letter. You could just cut and paste your post as it is. They really should know how much they wronged you and 300 other people. I know a refund would not erase the bad, but geesh, they really should try to make it up to you all.

Actually, your post is very nice. If it was me, I think my post would be banned from the board :earseek:

I just can't believe they did that to you.

We're here for as much "venting" as you need :grouphug: And I'm glad your back :flower1:

Thanks Sharon and Sunny for your support! I have to post a picture of the 'string' of Lime Green Mickey heads I wore in my ponytail. My DSis took a picture the night before. I wrote everyone's name on a Mickey head and then tied it into my hair so everyone rode with me! :) It was too hot to carry you all in my fanny pack -- you guys would have DIED from the heat and humidity!! :teeth:

I may draft a letter of complaint. I just don't think it will help anything. This is the first time this happened. The course is being changed for next year (haven't heard what the exact route will be). I think Disney thinks they 'fixed' everything by giving us official medals. I have been lurking on the Runners World forum and those people don't care about medals, certificates or anything, except their time! I guess I am just accepting that this marathon isn't staged for people like me -- trying to get fit, training for a goal, WANTING a picture with the characters or in front of the castle, and getting that Donald medal -- but for long distance athletes who are competing with their previous time, or trying to qualify for the Boston Marathon or something like that. I guess I am thinking that my expections may have been too high. Who knows... Basically I guess it is really a race that just happens to be held in WDW and not a WDW race. Does that make sense?

Welcome Back Terry! I'm so sorry your trip didn't work out the way you wanted, but atleast you were there and you would have completed what you set out to do if you weren't stopped. You need to get back to taking care of yourself and keep modivating the rest of us.

You are an inspirataion and champ in my eyes! :cheer2: It is unfortunate that what happened happened!

Oh Terry :grouphug: I am so sorry that happened to you and the others. I can hear your disappointment. I do think you should draft a letter. It was too big a mistake to just let go. You have alot to be proud of and noone can take that away from you. We are all very proud of you and all your accomplishments/sunny attitude everyday. :grouphug:

That makes total sense. I hadn't thought of it like that. It does give you some new perspective. But STILL... I'm glad you are processing it all and moving on.

Have a super day :flower1:
