Terrible Rain!! What to do? Help!

What do you do during a trip that gets heavy rain? We are here now and got hit with a POURING thunderstorm that killed our evening in the park. The next few days call for thunderstorms in the early afternoon. What do you do if it rains? Tomorrow we have a pool day, we can hopefully get some swimming in the first half. But what is there to do if it gets washed out the second part of the day?

You enjoy the empty parks!

One of the best days we had was caused by a hurricane which brought tons of rain to orlando. The parks were open and we walked on to every ride and every meet and greet. We had a durable stroller cover and ponchos on.
IMO you never leave, you wave bye to everyone else while singing in the rain!

We're here too and we loved the thunderstorm today! The Magic Kingdom emptied out a lot and the rain was refreshing. It does suck that the outdoor rides closed but most of the indoor rides had short waits. I don't really have any advice other than to be flexible and just roll with it.

Grab a poncho and keep going. Our favorite rain park is EP because so many attractions are inside (especially FW). We once toured the parks during a tropical storm when it rained for 72 hours straight. We just adjusted our plans and kept going.

I really don't mean for this to sound snarky, but if you aren't the type of family that can deal with touring the parks in the rain, you picked the wrong time to go. You should expect a thunderstorm every day from June through September. That's just Florida weather.

My advice is to try to learn to roll with it.

My boys still talk about the day we spent in AK during a torrential rain storm in 2011. You wouldn't think AK is good in the rain but it was a great day! All the animals were out on the safari so we rode it twice; Dinosaur, FOTLK, Nemo show, ITTBAB, Rafiki's Planet Watch, Primevil Whirl when the rain let up for about 15 minutes, lunch at TH. Other than bowling or a movie in DS or chilling in your room you kind of have to brave the rain if you want to do anything. Yes it can certainly put a damper on things and it means creative thinking, but it definitely doesn't have to ruin your trip!

apart from what others have already said:
Try and switch plans around (if you already haven't) and plan indoor attractions for the afternoons/evenings and outdoor attractions for the morning.
If you decide to put on your poncho and get get, take a couple of extra socks if wearing sneakers to change into once it stops raining
If you do decide to stay in your resort they try and get some CM to do indoor activities with the kids since the pools and outdoor movies will be cancelled.

Same thing as you do at home. Dress appropriately and do what you planned to do. Maybe a bit more indoors.

Back home you also dont cancel all your plans due to weather. You adapt to it.

If Rain/Winds/Lighting/etc. Cancel the fireworks, do the Castle light show elements of "Happily Ever After" still go on as scheduled or do they just cancel the entire show?

Alot of this depends on your kids ages.
My heart goes out to you. Some people do well in the rain while others run for cover.

Here are a few things to consider:
Go on a Hidden Mickey Hunt in Disney Springs,tell the kids you are pirates on a treasure hunt.
(the reward can be a trip to Goofy's Candy Shop).


Take in a movie at Disney Springs (AMC theatre).

Play a game of bowling (Spiltsville).

Check out your resorts children's activity center. (Lilos Playhouse).

Do a "Best Souvenir Hunt" exchange names with each other and set a price limit --now go hunting for the "Best Souvenir".
(The reward can be a ice-cream treat at Ghiraldi or starbucks while you exchange souvenirs).

Pick a Park with alot of indoor entertainment and try doing just those.
The only attraction/Ride that closes in Epcot is Test Track.
It is my favourite "Rainy Day Park".
Also you can pick up a Kids Passport for around 10-12 for each kid and visit all of the Country Kid-Cot stops for a stamp and CM signature.

Head to a new to you resort and have a snack/treat or meal.

I find having wet feet annoys me the most and this is why I always pack extra shoes.

I have a photo from last August when it was pouring and a tornado warning was called as we were getting ready to watch Wishes - it went on, though I'm pretty sure Tink didn't fly.

heavy rain coupled with lightning will cancel HEA, not 100% sure but it is a high possibility.

THank you all for the helpful replies. I suppose I shouldn't type with one eye open after midnight on an evening I had been in the parks all day-

What I should have said, is today is our scheduled POOL day, so though we will get in a few morning hours, what should we do once the thunderstorms roll in? I don't want to sit in the room.

Tomorrow we are at Epcot. We will try and push through the rain I suppose! I'm usually in it to win it no matter what.

They postponed it last night. The show was scheduled for 9 pm, right when the rain started.
Right after we gave up and started to make our way out of the park, at about 10:40 they made an announcement and the show came on!!!! The park was so empty we got a center view a few rows of people back, right from the castle.
It made the rain storm all worth it. The show, included the fireworks, was spectacular.

Then, the crowds left, and as we were 20 feet from the exit, there's was ANOTHER announcement that the original 11 pm fireworks show was coming on. We were done by that point though.

I don't mind the rain if I don't have to go out in it, but I've learned to just make the best of it when we're in WDW. We go twice a year, one of those trips is in June, and there's a 100% chance that we're going to experience it during our vacation. I steer my aunt and grandmother [can't get her hair wet!] to a dry area, put rain jackets on myself and daughter, and continue on. During and after a storm are great times to experience attractions as a lot of people take cover or simply leave, thinning the crowd quite a bit.

Only once did we camp out during a storm. It was in October [2012, I believe] and I've never seen such a torrential downpour like that before. It lasted hours, raining so hard it was going sideways, and I could barely see 10 feet in front of me. We hung around in The Land pavilion and then made a mad dash for The Living Seas.

Where are you staying? You could do a monorail resort tour, or take the bus from your resort > park > a resort you've wanted to explore but haven't found time to.
