I'm in a bit of a panic mode here. My knee has been bothering me for a while and I finally decided to go to the orthopedic. I feel pain behind my knee cap and it twinges a bit when I go upstairs. With the marathon a few months away I'm afraid the dr is going to tell me no running...no marathon...:sad1: I'll be DEVASTATED!!!

SO while I wait to see the dr. can you guys tell me your experiences with your knee injuries? Maybe I'll feel better...of course...I could feel worse too.

I get knee pain on and off. Nothing serious yet - knock on wood. My PT recommended strengthening and stretching my quads. I've also gone for ART (Active Release Therapy) sessions which have really helped with the pain. I suspect though that ART is more of a temporary pain relief soultion. I also try to get massages once a month to keep my muscles relaxed. If it's just something minor, you still have time before the marathon to get things fixed and healed.

Good luck :)

Suzy,

I also get knee pain occasionally. Things that might help. Replace worn out shoes, make sure you have the right shoe for your foot, take a few days rest, take ibuprofen for a few days, ice your knee, take glucosamine chondroitin, run on soft surfaces for a few days. I find if I only run 3 days a week I can keep the knee pain at bay. Good luck.

Hi Suzy,

I've been dealing with "knee pain" for a while now, it actually started after my half marathon back in May. I was told it was "runner's knee" from the sports doc and told to get a patella knee strap to wear while I run.

You wear it right below your knee and it supports the pateller tendon that is right below the knee.

I still run, with the strap now, and my doc never told me I couldn't. He knows that I am training for another half marathon and seems completely fine with how I am doing.

Hope that helps!

Thank you for your stories and advice. Dr appointment is tomorrow. I will let you know how I make out! Finger are crossed!

Hi Suzanne -

I fell off my horse in 2004 and snapped my ACL off. I had previously torn my Meniscus so while my surgeon was replacing my ACL he fixed the tear. After two months in a brace and extensive PT I have a better than brand new knee! So be optimistic, that if something is wrong and you get it fixed, you could come out even stronger!

As a side note....I was planning my wedding when this happened, which was at the Wilderness and in surfing the boards, I met Cam and saw in her signature she had done races at WDW. It was my goal to do a marathon before I turned 40, but, well that didn't happen. But since part of my PT for my knee was walking on the TM, I just kept going and now I have a whole collection of bling to show for it! :thumbsup2

Suzanne I endured bouts of ITB syndrome last year--not knee pain exactly, but close. The main thing I discovered....find a doctor who understands that you are an athlete....saying "give up running/walking" is not an option. I switched doctors--and in the end, it wasn't that the diagnosis or treatment was different, it was that the second doctor was also a runner, and understood that I was going to keep running, and helped me deal with it.

Well it turned out to be Quadricept Tendonitis (sp?). So I can still run in the marathon and the 1/2 I have coming up next month. PHEW!!!
