Teeth Whitening

Hello,
In the last month of so I have realized how dingy my teeth have become. I have dark "stripes" which appear to be where I once wore braces (from 5th-7th grade - many, many moons ago). My dentist has suggested whitening at various points over the years, but I've always demurred. Now I'm reconsidering. I've tried the strips and have not noticed any results. I actually have an appointment with the dentist in January to have impressions made so I can start doing the whitening trays at home, but that's going to cost $$$$. Has anyone done anything less expensive that worked?? Our mall has the $99 whitening (which I was shocked to see in a mall - the chairs are right there in the open!) - are they any good? Any other options?

Don't do it in the mall! Those people don't know what they are doing and I've heard they don't work.

I got good results with the Aquafresh white trays.

dd had the mall one...not worth it.

ask your dentist what brand (s)he uses. maybe it is nite white which works really good. i paid $$$ through my dentist (had custom trays made) but it is available here :

I had fitted trays done years ago for my high school graduation at my dentist and had excellent result. I had braces put on after that so the trays no longer fit but I like Rembrandt 2-hour whitening for touchups now.

Not a fan of the strips and I haven't utilized the mall kiosks.

I have trays from the Dentist and I think it was about $250. Now the gel to put in them is only $20. I use White Bright from the Dentist and that lasts me about 6 mos. People always tell me how white my teeth are.

I had decent luck with Crest WhiteStrips, but the result didn't last. I might try again. A friend got the trays made at the dentist and has had really good results, but it is expensive.

You can get moldable trays on ebay, they come w/ a bleaching gel, they work pretty well

Thanks for all the suggestions, and for steering me away from the mall! I don't think I would have done that anyway, but it's good to know they aren't any good.

I think I will get the trays made and watch Amazon and eBay for the gel. After all, I should be able to use the trays forever, right?

The trays work well, but if you are looking for a fast option...Try Zoom, its a 1 hour in office whitening procedure. I do all the Zoom in our dental office, and have really seen some amazing results with dark teeth.* It seems that the darker they are, the more results we see.

One thing you do need to take into consideration is if you have any crowns, prosthetics, or white colored fillings on the front teeth they will not change colors with any type of whitening. They will need to be replaced aftet the whitening takes place or you will be two different shades on your teeth.

Another is if you need any work such as Root canals, crowns, or fillings, they should be discussed with a dentist before doing any type of whitening because the whitening makes the teeth a little more sensitive and may cause pain to teeth that have caries(decay).

If your dentist has strips, they are stronger than what you can buy in the store...The ones in the store are not prescription strength, and the ones your denstist has are...So that may also be another option for you!

Remember that a lot of the over the counter whitening options cause sensitivity. I know Zoom does not. Does anyone know if the Bright White cause your teeth to be sensitive?

I just looked into this for myself and am going to be doing the trays from my dentist. I tried whitening strips once but noticed spots and tooth/gum sensitivity. The teeth whitening kiosks you see in the malls and stores are not necessarily being operated by people that know anything about dental care. They get around having to have licensed people because you are the one putting the trays in your mouth. They are also usually using a much stronger solution than a dentist will use which can eat at the enamel. This SITE offers opinions and information on the various methods available.

What have your results been with the Zoom for someone with tetracycline staining. Mine is not extreme like some with really grey teeth but my front teeth about 1/2 way up have some slight greyish cast from taking tetracyline as a child. I have heard some dentist say it will not help with this but have heard others say it does help. Since you actually do it in your office I thought you might have some great insight in this. Thanks.

All whitening options HAVE THE ABILITY TO cause sensitivity to the teeth/gums. Think of it as getting a facial that opens your pores. Your skin is sensitive after that. Once you stop whitening, the sensitivity goes away. For those that already have sensitive teeth, you should talk with your dentist about using a prescription strength fluoride gel or toothpaste while whitening that can help prevent or minimize it.

I have a tendency toward sensitive teeth and the nite white did not make them sensitive. It made them really look good...nice and shiney too!

I have never actually whitened someone with tetracycline staining, but our Zoom rep and trainer said most likely it wouldnt help much. The answer is either crowns, veneers, or fillings.

I just scheduled an appointment to have my teeth whitened with the ZOOM procedure in just a couple of weeks! I am SO excited to try this out. My dentist's office has a special going on where it is 50% off for the month of March. He does this every year and I think it is a great idea. All of the proceeds go to charity.

It is $300 and I can't wait to try it. Has anyone else tried ZOOM? I heard there might be some sensitivity to the teeth/gums during the procedure. I am just a bit worried about that part.

Bumping up to see if anyone has any new information on this subject from the past 2 years.

I want to get my son's teeth whitened, and am curious to see if there are any newer brands or types of whitening.



Our dentist charges $350 for the take home kit, or $550 for the in-office treatment. Both are way too rich for our blood.

Google the best home Natural remedies you may be VERY surprised to learn that you likely have what you need at home already
Baking soda and peroxide...or baking soda and lemon.....Even Dr Oz has it listed...
ALL these things (including the dentists) are removing stains that also wear away part of your enamel (thus the sensitivity)
Personally I have brushed and flossed as regular
used straight lemon pieces/juice rubbed on my teeth ...left in place for about a minute
followed by another full brushing and rinsing....
I have not and would not do it more than once every week or 2 , but the change is very noticeable.....
stay away from tea/coffee (dare I say cigs) (or use a straw and good luck.....do a search...youd be amazed at what youll find.......
