Teens and working out?

oops! Booked our cruise last year before I realized what my son's high school swim team schedule was like. There is a good chance we will be gone for the two weeks before state championships. Are there any special times that teens are able to use the weight room/gym or is it strictly 18+?

On occasion, on some cruises, there may be a night or two that the teen club "invades" the gym. But it's basically 18 and over only.

18 and up only.

However, if he likes to run, then Deck 4 would be a good workout for him. And the basketball court might be fun too while getting in a workout.
Oh he's going to love me for suggesting that! (He often says he's meant to swim, not run...lol). But beggars can't be choosers! If he wants to get a workout in, he'll have to suck it up! ;)

I've only seen the teens invade the gym on 7 night cruises. And it's usually around 8 or 9 which stinks if you have late dinner. He can also swim in the ocean if that works for your port stops.

I would definitely speak to the coach to see what dry land activities would be best to compensate for so much lost swim time.

Why don't you ask his coach to design a work-out program for him that he can do on deck or in the room? There are probably plenty of things that don't need equipment, although it would help.

Maybe bring some resistance bands? Very portable and a good strength workout. The coach could probably give some ideas. This is probably fancier than what you would need, but along these lines:

All good ideas. Thanks so much! Yes, I'm sure his coach can come up with something for him.

and your son has agreed to go on this cruise?

My son was able to go to the workout room every night with the teen club on our 5 day cruise this past March. He runs and there were a lot of high school runners on the ship, so they all ran on deck 4 as well. Good luck to your son!

I agree about asking the coach for workout ideas. Otherwise, in addition to running and maybe basketball to keep his cardio up, I would suggest lots of strength resistance training--pushups, planks, wall sits, using resistance bands, etc. In port, make him do some runs on the beach if possible (it works little leg muscles you never knew existed) and some swimming in the ocean.

Best of luck to him!

That's great to hear! I was hoping there was an "off time" where the teens might be able to go. He'll be happy to know that's a possibility. Although I also love the idea of cross training/dryland training for him. With his coach's direction, I'm sure he'll be fine. He'll definitely be one of the tannest swimmers at states (we're from New England)! LOL!
