Team 'Ohana--No One Left Behind: The Continuing Adventures

Mel - I won't run in tulle, but I might make one next time I put on that green wig for scream-teaming. I'm thinking of the Princess 5K, even though last year I did not see a single WISH shirt at that event.

Jackie - I think I might choose Ireland over WDW, too, at this point! :scratchin Though you know you will be missed. I think it's pretty shafty the way they changed the dates on Princess after publicizing it. Fine to change it year to year, but for goodness sake, don't bait and switch like that!

My first post-race miles today were fine. It was funny - I had some shin-splinty sensations on Monday as I was leaving WDW, and I thought it was strange cause I don't usually get those and I had had none on Sunday. I think it was from all that jumping around like a nut, cheering for WISHers in the Marathon!

Speaking of Marathon, gotta share the story (appologies to those who heard it already this weekend) of the woman behind me getting off the bus on the morning of the half: "I've always wondered why it's 13.1. I mean, why the .1???" And I felt like turning around and shaking her, saying "Do you not know it's 26.2 miles between Marathon and Athens???? What is HALF of 26.2??? THAT is why!" But I just kept on walkin'. :rolleyes1

Next up here: DH is in 'Art' which opens at the end of the month. I am doing the program design and also painting a rather large monochromatic painting that is supposed to have been bought for $200,000. No pressure. I bought the canvas today and it BARELY fit in the back of my van. I only bought two big tubes of paint - I am thinking that might not actually be enough... I will post a picture when I'm done, BUT expect it to look like a whole lot of WHITE.

Except you'd be overheard by some smart *** who would remind you that the extra distance to get to the 26.2 was added during the London Olympics, and you'd end up being shaken too, and no one wants that. :)

Woah - I know what happens when I assume!!! It seems I would have had a good shaking coming to me at that point! So what I'm wondering is this: Is it good that it's a set distance now, or would the world be a more interesting place if Marathon were still a term used to refer to any 25ish mile run ?

Considering how many people asked me, "you ran a marathon this weekend? How far did you go?" I think the world is interesting enough as it is. Well, at least a lot of the people in it make it that way. :lmao:

Or the number of people who tell me they think they probably run about 10M/hr. Really?! Right from your couch? I'm just sayin'...

Oh! And once you start telling people you are running in kilometers rather than miles (say, a 5K), their eyes glaze over and they get really confused...

Speaking of which, I'm up past my bedtime. I ran 3M today in my continuing quest for recovery.

Maria :upsidedow

Let's not mention the people who don't really distinguish between a half marathon and a marathon. It's like before I moved to Minnesota, I figured that cold was cold and how much different would -20 feel from -2? Turns out a whole lot different.

Maria, I tell ya, I can do 10 mph no problem....on a bike!

Maria - great race report :thumbsup2 I'm sorry that you don't have an official finish time yet, hopefully they'll be able to get that straightened out for you soon.

Mike and I had a great time at marathon weekend this year. We got to see so many old friends and also meet up with some new ones too. Our flight home was canceled so we extended our vacation one day. If we had to be stuck somewhere, WDW is a great place to be.

I have posted a few of my pictures on facebook. I'm friends with many of you on FB but don't know how to find everyone on there...any help, friend suggestions, would be appreciated.

I'm going to try and write more about my Goofy race experience this weekend but want to quickly thank all of the awesome WISH team members who were out cheering on Sat and Sun. I really loved:love: all the team support that I recieved both days on the course....it was amazing!

Next race for me is the Princess. My shins are still tender and I'm not sure about running in the next couple of days. Reading your posts about the miles you have done this week make my legs hurt:eek: I'm hoping to start back training early next week.

So who all is going to the princess:Princess race this year?

Well team, I am going to say that I like what I believe is the consensus choice to maintain what we have in this thread and I have change the thread title name accordingly. I'd appreciate a bit of help in reviewing the team members in the first post and letting me know where I need to update names.

I wish I had more time to post tonight but I am coming off of a full day with my father today, plus a planning and uniform try-on session on Ironman nutrition with my tri team (does lycra really make anyone look good?) and an 11+ mile run this morning. Tomorrow's schedule starts off with 3 hours on the bike before taking care of paying bills and a bunch of office paperwork while watching football. Finally, I have dropped another pound or two this last week, taking me a bit further under 200 lbs to a weight that I have not seen since I was around 27 years old :scared1: (i.e. about 18 years ago). This time I plan to stay south of the big 200 mark on the scale. (Actually, I have a digital scale with no real markings, but you know what I mean. ;) )

OK, I am off to go measure out HEED and prepare 3 bottles for tomorrow's bike.....

I will be at the Princess race! Running the Half, planning on a little Lime Scream-Teaming action for the 5K, cause why not, right?

I am sorry about your poor shins - hopefully a little ice, a little biofreeze a lot of rest and you're feeling a lot better now. Your legs deserve a break after everything they did for you last weekend!

You know I was happy to be out there on Sunday - it was great seeing you on the course and one of the highlights of the day was when you stopped and talked to me at the water stop. And then you gave me your mittens and I tell you, that was just what I needed. Thank you. I had forgotten my gloves in the room that day and had hand warmers inside the vinyl gloves, but it was marginal at best since they weren't getting much air. I spent the last 20 minutes of walkers looking forward to tear-down so I could put those mittens on! Oh, they were just the ticket, I tell you. So thank YOU for supporting at least one volunteer on the course. I really appreciated it!

Richard, When I was in 5th grade, I was in a production of Alice in Wonderland where we wore unitards. I was a lumpy, unathletic 5th grader and I have to say, there are few things in this world less flattering than a white unitard. Hopefully your lycra is a darker color, at least!

Congratulations on your continued weight loss! It sounds like you're in a great place right now! Your tri-training sounds very time consuming! As is to be expected I suppose, but still....Hours and hours, man.

So regarding the team and the thread and all, is it time for a new roll call and maybe talk about race plans for the coming year? Looking through the list, I can think of some cousins I've seen recently here and others that haven't been around lately - might be a good time to check in with them and see if they want to stick with us or are moving on. If we want to do a roll call, I can check off the people we hear from in the next few days and then send some PM's to those we don't hear from if that would help.

P.S. How is your dad doing?

I'm in!

Richard, on the Lycra question...no, it's just not a good look for anyone. Remember that pic that went viral of the Polish bike team in their red shorts? Please suggest to your team not to use red. :thumbsup2

Kathy...you looked great out there during the full! I'm sure you'll need some recovery time. Do you have a stick or foam-roller?

I'm in for Princess, scream-teaming for 5K as looks like the rest of the fam are going to try to do it. DD18 just got Vibrams to try. DD7 got new fast Nikes!

Other races:

March FL Beach Halfathon (hoping to PR)
April Iron Girl Half
May FITriathlon
Nov Women's Half
If there's a relay option for the full in Jan, I may do that, but otherwise I'm skipping Jan next year in favor of Princess

Sign me and Dennis up!

My next race is the Princess, I haven't thought much after that...Dennis's next race is the Boston Marathon in April, and then the Run to Remember in May, and Harpoon 5K in June.

Like Mel, my plan as of right now is to skip the WDW Half in favor of Princess in 2012. But, we really had a great time this year, so I *might* be able to talk Dennis into doing it again if I can radically slash the cost and I do something miraculous that deserves a reward, like dropping a goodly amount of weight. I'm starting WW meetings Monday... POP, here we come! (crosses fingers)

I got up and ran my 3M this morning, after 4M intervals (yep, adding those back in) Friday and 20min on the exercise bike. I have church in a little bit, but wanted to post that I was able to contact the people at TrackShack, and they did find me in the race finish video and photos, so I will be added to the official finishers and have a time. :woohoo: It should be in they system by the close of business Wednesday, so after I get back from my trip to NYC Wed and Thurs., I will post my official time! As you can imagine, this made my day and I feel like I can put this one to rest and now focus on my next goal -- getting a little (even a minute!) faster for Princess!

Richard -- I know you had to resist the impulse to rename the thread ":to Infinity and Beyond!" -- I might have done it, you are made of stern stuff! :thumbsup2

Corinna -- Good luck with the artistic endeavor -- you are so talented! :worship:

Jackie -- Thank you for worrying about me -- I was worried myself when I saw I didn't have a time. I knew I crossed the finish line :confused3

Oops! Out of time if I don't want the pastor scowling at me...

Maria :upsidedow

I'm here!

Race plans are on hold until I meet with the doctor on the 2nd. The PT says no running this year, but the ortho had told me I could be back to running after 3 months post-op. There's a SLIGHT discrepancy there, so I'm hoping once I see him again he'll stick with his original agreement.

If he clears me to run, then I'm planning another attack on MCM in October. That will probably be all I do, other than maybe a local 5K or two. And MCM will be with the agreement that I can defer to next year or drop to the 10K if training doesn't go as planned.

Maria - Wonderful news that Track Shack was able to find you and make you official. Can't wait to see the time.

Richard - Good luck today with your bike ride today!

Kathy - One day... maybe we'll actually be at the same race at the same time. Seems like we keep coming so close!

As for people who just don't get it - it's so refreshing when the opposite happens. We had a corporate training guy in last week, and he overheard my boss and me talking about when I'd be able to run again. He mentioned that he was headed to Key West next weekend for a half marathon. We immediately began a conversation of what races we'd done, which ones we wanted to do... I love not having to explain my passion! And Key West - now on my list of races I'd like to do!

Jackie

Hi Cousins! I am back from DD Patricia's housewarming party today and ready to catch up a bit with y'all...

Jackie - I am glad to hear that you are looking forward with your running. Good luck in your continued recovery. One of my local running friends is heading to. Key West for that half marathon next weekend too!

Maria - You nailed me on the thread:surfweb: name! And I would have done it but did not feel right about stealing a bit of theme from the Buzz team. ;)

Mel - ouch! I forgot about that video :rotfl: However, the team colors are red, white and black....with LOTS of "appropriately placed" black in the pattern. ;) Actually, I do like how the uniforms look, even the one-piece version. :scared1: Fortunately, I have the chance to drop a few more pounds BEFORE any photos get posted.

Corinna - I understand you unitard reference up close and personal right now. However, I did like the based look. Thanks for doing the heavy lifting on the team roster. Time consuming is a good description of my current training :rotfl: each of the last two weeks has been close to 13-14 hours of training and my short runs have become 6 miles during the week. I am amazed that I have kept up thus far, this week builds in another 2 hours before a recovery week following that. I am blogging my training details weekly, if anyone is interested in reading about then (the link should be in my signature). Finally, my father is doing fairly well, but we are working on rebuilding an estranged relationship.

AFM - Today's bike ride turned into a 3 hour spin bike session due to rainy weather. Fortunately, there were several other riders there, including a couple I knew, that invited me to join them where they had moved several spin bikes into a circle for a group spin ride. I ended up solo for only 40 minutes of the 3 hours.

Hi cousins! I have been reading, but not been very good about posting. The BL thread has been very busy since the end of December, and it's been taking up a lot of my time. Plus I have just been mentally in a little bit of a slump. I started taking Vitamin D, and am looking forward to a trip to see DS at school in mid-Feb and wdw at the end of Feb. I think everything at home is going to start settling down--or at least I hope it is. Mike is going to come with me to run Princess--after the way the new year started, he decided he needed a trip, and I am really glad he's coming along.

I have decided the salt (or lack of) was fueling my nausea. I ran 12 miles on Saturday with only minor gi issues and no nausea! So one problem hopefully resolved and one to still work on, but getting better.

Maria--I think I said this on another thread, but I am so glad they are going to get you a time.

Jackie--a Key West 1/2 sounds fabulous! Mike is googling it right now! I hope you get good news from the doctor!

Corinna--please add me to the list.:goodvibes

Have a good week everyone!

Corinna - I wish I would have had gloves to give you...this is the first time I have ever started a race with mittens. They were on clearance at Target and were cheaper than the gloves. I'm glad they were helpful during clean up time.

Mel - No, I don't have a stick or foam roller. My shins probably would hate it anyways. Just the little bit that I had to touch my shins while putting on my socks was painful. I'm MUCH better today. It was the first day that walking down the stairs was not uncomfortable. I'm going to try and do a few miles tomorrow.

Maria - I'm so glad that they were able to find the videos/pictures of you and confirm your finish. I wonder what happened to your d-tag that you didn't get a time.

Jackie - wishing you a speedy recovery and hope that you get the doctor's blessing to start running again soon.

I haven't been too good at posting regularly but I am going to try really hard to check in at least once a week. I am going to need some kind of accountability and encoragement to keep up my training. My world is going to change drastically in a few days....I'm returning to full time employment after being home for ten years with the kids. I start my new position on Tuesday.

I'm also helping to start a Girls on the Run program at my school. Does anyone here participate in GOTR? I'm excited to begin this journey with my DD10. I'm going to coach the program two days a week for 8 weeks. It ends with a 5K race in May. It will be my first ever 5K. I'm sure it will be an exciting one for all!

Lots of changes coming this year for me. I'm hoping for the best with all of them.

Looking forward to becoming a more active 'Ohana member in this new year.

Kathy...how exciting!! What kind of job are you starting? I've always wanted to do GOTR...can't wait to see how it goes for you! That might be cool to do with DD7's girl scout troop. BTW, if anyone wants girl scout cookies, we're taking preorders :thumbsup2

Maria...so glad they got your time situation straightened out! That would be really frustrating. We'll be rooting for you to be faster at Princess!

Jackie...hoping for good news from the ortho!! You can get a different opinion from everyone you ask...can be frustrating to know what the right thing to do is. We're hoping to get up there to your neck of the woods sometime this year.

Mel - I'm going to be a reading specialist at a K-5 school. Once upon a time I was a first grade teacher. I'm both excited and nervous about returning to teaching. It should be an interesting couple of months at our house...especially for poor Mike!

Kathy: Congrats on the new job :cool1: I'm sure the family will adjust and you'll do well. Sorry you had such a tough time with Goofy, but I'm thrilled your shins are improving and that you are already talking about getting back out there. It was so m=nice to see you over the weekend and to hang out before the race.

Maria: I'm glad you will get an official time for the half. I've taken to stomping on the mats when I run to make sure they pick me up-- most likely overkill but I still do it after last year's start mat missing me.

Richard: Awesome job on all of your Ironman training :worship:

Jackie: speedy recovery wishes to you-- maybe I need to do MCM next year too

Rose: glad to hear the stomach issues have improved, hopefully we can meet in person for Princess weekend

Definitely count me in for Ohana team status. I feel very lucky to have found this awesome group of people.

I've done a few post-Goofy runs and am working on upping the pace a bit for Princess. I will be in WDW on a quick weekend trip with some friends so not sure how much WISH time I will have but want to try to catch up with everyone when I am there. Work beckons, I'll check in again later.

Maria - I'm glad they finally figured out your time for you. Well, more like you forced them to do so courtesy of the video, but it's still good that they fixed it.

Kathy - congrats on the new job! It sounds pretty exciting for you, and I'm sure Mike will adapt just fine. :)

Jen & Jackie - count me in for MCM this year or next. It's one of the few on my "must run" list.

Mel - too bad you can't ship the cookies. No one in my office has kids selling them this year, and I'm all out of thin mints. :(

Not much new to report here. I've enjoyed my week off to recover after Goofy and am starting back at it. My next marathon is in a month - no rest for the wicked or the weary.

Speaking of Goofy, my race report from the first few days is now online. I'm still drafting the full and our day at Epcot on Monday. Here's the link: http://jmsenger.blogspot.com

To infinity & beyond! Ooops, wrong team, right sentiment. Y'all know I'm in for another year - once a cousin, always a cousin. Even if a bit of a black sheep! :lmao: And DOOD just loves all of you, so he's losing his out-law status.

John & Corinna: Now, we always knew that Chip & Dale to be lascivious little souls . I'd say that Chip is considering his options carefully. Just sayin'. Both creepers. Now my underlying question is...you stopped for a picture with them?

John: It was good to meet you, for no matter how brief a time. The blue-wig pics just reminded me of how much I missed out on.

Maria: Once again, big congrats to your stellar race. It was wonderful to draft off you. (Way back, of course. Way, way back. :rotfl2:) Bummer about the missing 15K chip time, but I'm glad to know it's all getting sorted out. And I just love your goals for the Princess!

Mel: Pretty princess is alliterative. But so not me. John's another story. I know you talked about now doing WDW Marathon weekend - but you'll still be there, right? And just curious...why the Princess over the Jan. 1/2? I can think of a couple of reasons why, including the blankety-blank field of 27,000 athletes.

Jackie: Study abroad in Ireland sounds fantastic! I know your DD needs to make her own decisions - but push her into it. You deserve such a trip. Just to make sure she's doing okay. :lmao: I'm with you on the date change with the Princess. It conflicts with spring break here, too. By the way, how is your recovery going? And your relationship with your PT? Was the difference in medical opinion resolved regarding your return to running?

Kathy: Fabulous news on returning to work as reading specialist. So important, what you're doing. I hope the change goes smoothly for you! I'm looking forward to hearing your Girls on the Run stories!

Richard: You tri athlete, you! What a great way to start 2011, with all those miles & a new number on the scale. Big numbers where you want them, that's what I say! I'm also impressed with your continued posting AND blogging, as I can only imagine how much time is spent in training.

Rose: Things are looking good with your GI issues, with that 12 miler under your belt. Salt, huh? I think I might pass that along to some people I know. Thanks! And woo hoo that you and Mike will be at the Princess. A trip together sounds needed and well-deserved.

JenB: Awesome goal for the Princess. And considering how well you did with the Goofy, with your huge PR and all, I know you have it in you for doing well at the end of February. Is Butch doing the Princess with you?

AFM: In my good news of the week...we're now getting the SyFy channel with our cable package! I don't know if it's a promo or part of the cable package shift that regularly happens. But I'm happy! DOOD, not so much.

As for running news, most of you know that I had no time goal but I did have other running goals in mind for the half. Most important was consistency with my intervals - you know I tend to fartlek races, to no great success - & treating this as a LR so as to not interrupt my getting back on track. I'm very pleased with my "race" because I accomplished that - it's really the first time in a long time where I felt in control of my running. I hope that makes sense.

And I had a good time with Diane L. on most of the course, and getting to see Jen, Mel, Maria, Marcia, Lily, and Howard's son, etc. And my highlight? I saw ThunderMatt on the overpass, dropped to one knee and proposed to him (shouting up at him) because I'm always so happy to see him. Alas, he rejected me for some reason? (I'm quite sure his DW wouldn't have minded - it was a two-fer proposal.)

So that's my RR. I'm a slacker, I know. I'm working on being less of one, in all ways. Especially fitness-wise, as 2010 was the toughest year I've had in a while. Just keep egging me on. Err, encouraging.

To that end, my post-race runs have been fine. Considering I'm running in single-digit temps, that is. Is it just me, or do sweaty tights stick in all the wrong places?
