Team 'Ohana--No One Left Behind: The Continuing Adventures

Debra - I see the doctor on Feb 2nd. Until then, I'm in limbo-land as to what my running plans are for this year. I'm holding out that he will clear me to run as of March 22nd (3 months post-op). If not, expect one heck of a temper tantrum. DD has now decided to push the semester abroad to spring 2012, due to deadlines that were pretty much unattainable. (Registration was due yesterday... and they wanted her passport info as well. We let hers expire 2 years ago...) But we're still going forward, and if anyone wants to join us for St Patty's Day in Ireland, feel free!

John & Jen - Looks like an 'Ohana meet at MCM! Jen - that means you need to put this one on the calendar. Registration opens Feb 23. Even if they don't clear me to do marathon mileage, I'm still going to shoot for the 10K. My running partner isn't letting me off the hook on this one. And I've already asked for the days off!

Kathy - Good luck on the job! Saw on the BOT thread that you got a snow day today. What a way to start! And you can come to MCM too, you know...

Rose
- I should have thought about the salt. DD had a really bad case of dehydration early in her soccer career (like 6th grade?) and after that any time she got hot or over-exerted herself, she'd get bad headaches or really queasy and often throw up. We tried everything - hydrating for several days before, water, Gatorade, and finally started feeding her pretzels and potato chips during the game. Junior year of high school, and we solved the problem - but not until I'd started running marathons and realizing how important salt was. I also learned that once you'd had a severe reaction to dehydration you were much more susceptible, so she now knows to be extra careful.

PT yesterday - first day in the "gym." Did a whopping quarter mile on some machine. Can't call it a TM, not a bike exactly, definitely not an elliptical, but I was moving my legs. :cool1: Tomorrow it's back to the pool. Tonight I'll use the weights at home. My upper body is wondering exactly what it did to deserve this sudden burst of attention, but I'm desperate!

Jackie

Mel: Pretty princess is alliterative. But so not me. John's another story. I know you talked about now doing WDW Marathon weekend - but you'll still be there, right? And just curious...why the Princess over the Jan. 1/2? I can think of a couple of reasons why, including the blankety-blank field of 27,000 athletes.

I'll likely still come for Jan weekend just to hang out...that's become the best part of the weekend. Though now that I'm contemplating the 50 x 50 challenge, I may need to do Jan to make my annual quota. I think I can probably do 2 - 3 local races for the cost of one WDW half. That's one reason I'm focusing on Princess next year instead. Same course, same price...why pay so much to do it twice in two months? I'm hoping Princess will keep going and I can be a Perfect Princess like the Perfectly Goofy and those folks that have done all 18 fulls.

Jackie...great that you're getting back moving again. Hope you're back for MCM this year. What did you think of the Tobacco Road race?

Kathy...great way to start the new job! We definitely need some snow days down here!

John...what race is up next for you?

I met a guy near the finish of the half that by the end of the weekend would be perfectly Goofy and perfectly Micky. What impresses me is not running that many races but rather that nothing else has interfered or happened in his life to prevent him from being in Orlando the second weekend of January every year. I can say with 100% certainty that I've never done the same thing on the same weekend for 18 years in a row. Wow!

Jackie...great that you're getting back moving again. Hope you're back for MCM this year. What did you think of the Tobacco Road race?

So are we really doing this? I hadn't planned on a fall marathon since training for one sucks during Houston's summer, but I'm in if Jackie and JenB are. :)

John...what race is up next for you?

Well, don't let the powers that be know, but I'm running the marathon here next weekend with a borrowed bib. I'm trying to finish the Texas Marathon Challenge this year (5 marathons or longer in the state between Oct & May), and due to life getting in the way, the only way I can do it is if I run Austin & Cowtown back to back in February. Until today, that is, when a young woman I met while running the full at Disney offered me her bib since her IT band is bothering her. Just call me Delaney for the next week and a half. I need to get used to hearing it so I respond appropriately during the race. :lmao:

Kathy--very exciting about GOTR! I would love to hear more about how it goes. And good luck with the new job!

Debra--Uggh. Single digit temps. Yuck. I won't run outside unless it's above 40. I really just do not like the cold! And I'm having trouble keeping up--are you doing Princess, too? Corinna and I have been talking about Jelly Rolls....

Woohoo for getting back to the "gym." And think of what amazing arms you can have by spring if you keep it up!

My post run now consists on eating salty pretzels immediately upon stopping--I eat them during my cooldown. If I wait until we get home (we live 15 minutes from the Y and the park we run at) I am in trouble. So far I've only had to do it for 8+miles. I also take endurolytes every 3 miles. And then the rest of the day I just feel like I can't eat enough salt. I think part of it is that I just sweat an excessive amount of salt out--I can scrape the salt off my skin after a long run. And part of it might be whatever is out of wack that causes me to have so many pac's. I guess for races I will probably just carry a salt packet, because if there is any wait at all at the bag check I will be in trouble. Thanks for sharing about your daughter--I tried everything too--and the gatorade was pretty much useless. It's nice to know I'm not the only one.

John--Delaney--hmmm, is that a gender neutral name? I can't decide.:thumbsup2 I hope you have a great race.

We ran at the Y tonight. It was crazy crowded and a million degrees. If it is warm for Princess I will be ready! Hope everyone is doing well!:goodvibes

MCM - I will not be running it but I'll definitely be there cheering. I'm usually able to see Mike on the course 4-5 times. It looks like a fun run, I'm just not interested in doing a marathon outside of WDW.

So I did my first post Goofy miles tonight. They were a tough slow 4 miles but they are done. Only a few weeks until the Princess race and I already feel so behind in the training. I hope my legs cooperate better in a few days.

Today was suppose to be my first day of work but I had the day off due to snow/ice. It was great to have the day at home in my pjs but now I get to be nervous all over again this evening.

Checking in quickly before I load up and head out to catch my train to NYC -- My official time for the WDW Half is 2:56:29 -- I am really excited because that's 15 minutes faster than last year! :woohoo: I know I would have improved more last year if the conditions had been better, but I also know upping my weekly runs to 10M really made a difference in my endurance.

Kathy -- Have a great first day at your new job, and Congratulations! :thumbsup2

Rose -- I can't believe I'm already thinking about temps for Princess -- didn't I just do a race?! :rotfl:

John, er Delaney -- Best of luck, I know you will rock it out! :rockband:

Mel -- Is it wrong that I'm gleeful thinking about only half the field for Princess? I am so looking forward to room to run :cool1:

Jackie -- I'm crossing my fingers for you -- you deserve some good news! ::yes::

Debra -- 2011 is a new year in every way. Plenty of time to get in shape before the end of the world in 2012  :rolleyes1 :rotfl2:

JenB -- Thanks for the good advice -- I will also be a "mat stomper"! :goodvibes

Richard -- Sounds like your Ironman tri training is coming along nicely. I'm glad you had company for the bikeathon (ok, for me it would have been one!) ::yes::

Ok, off to get ready and head out. I'll get back late Thursday, and then I plan to stay home and run 10M Friday. I want to check out the Disney Store in Times Square this afternoon. One of my local Disney Stores is closing :headache:

Everyone have a fabulous week!

Maria :upsidedow

Jackie: I hope the doc gives you clearance to run and your hip is up for the task. I have this mental image of you running by with killer strong arms pumping away. MCM does seem really tempting-- I'll chat with my DH and we may commit, I know it fills up quickly.

John/Delaney: Enjoy your run-- wear the wig, no one will know you aren't actually Delaney.

Rose: So good to hear your GI issues are better. We were actually in a race where they had a giant table of salt packets at mile 11ish. My DH has started getting in the habit of swiping a few from a counter service place and running with them for races-- he sweats a fair bit too (to the tune of shorting out 2 of our TM's and the console on our elliptical)

Kathy: Good luck with the new job. I know you'll do well-- can't wait to hear about it. Great job on getting some miles in too, so glad to hear your shins are improving.

Maria: mat stompers of the world unite-- awesome time for the half, I know you can beat it for Princess

Mel: I love the 50 by 50 idea-- how many have you done so far? We have girl scout cookies here too. I'm not really in the mood to sell them, my real motivation is to get them out of the house so they don't kill my diet attempts.

Richard: now you are just trying to confuse me-- Roman numerals, really? I think I can keep up, but this is getting tough.

AFM: I ran a few times last week and it was not pretty. Did manage a solid 5 miles yesterday that felt good as part of my Princess training. The diet is back on in full force to lose the 5 lbs of Christmas/holiday indulgence an the 20 I wanted to lose before that.

I have an appointment this Friday to get my dental implant :scared1: and am not sure how it will impact my training. The first step was so nasty that I'm kind of scared to go, but know in the end it will be worth it. I hope to get up early and get in a long run Friday morning then I won't feel so guilty if I can't run for a few days (and may be too tired to be scared for the procedure)..

Mel - Tobacco Road is a wonderful race. Most of the course is on an old rail bed. Almost flat, either dirt or crushed gravel. The remainder is just challenging enough to make it not boring. I PR'd last year by 20+ minutes. Nice festivities at the end - last year there was a beer garden with a local microbrewery, but I was talking to one of the organizers last week and he mentioned that they were trying to get as many as 4 different breweries this year. Small enough field that it wasn't as crowded as we had feared for the course, although we had a hard time getting around a couple of the pace groups at the beginning while doing our run/walk intervals. I'm planning to volunteer this year. Alas, I just looked, and the 2011 half is now sold out... :sad1:

Hi everyone! I've enjoyed reading all of the discussions and comments about salt. It truly is one of the most important things in getting through a distance event, long workout, etc., without getting dehyrdated and bonking. I never fully realized this until my first ultra trail run when I found out that in addition to pretzels and chips, every aid station was fully stocked with cold quartered potatoes and a bowl of salt. You grab a piece of potato, dip it in the salt, and eat it. Sounds strange, but it really does work, and they're much tastier than goo when you're out there for so long.

Jen - your idea about the wig is a good one, but sadly, the blue hair is no more. Way too stinky and sticky after the half to keep around any longer. Next year, I'll either match Corinna in green or go for the dye job like Debra. :)

John - I'll try to keep an eye out for the Delaney bib as I cheer runners on at the Houston marathon.

Jen - why not Roman numerals? I'm just trying to put 4 years of high school Latin to work for me. Good luck with your dental work!

Maria - Congratulations on the 15 minute improvement, that is a big change from the last time, and I do understand how long 3 hours on a bike sounds (This week it will be 4 hours!:scared1:)

Debra - My posting and blogging time is taking a hit these days, although some days I still manage to keep up with both, alas sleep takes the biggest hit of all these days. As to just how busy my training is, well I am not really sure I should list that for fear of my actually having to believe it to be true.

AFM - In addition to my IM training, I have also kt up with my diet and eating goal, which brings me to a strange place with a big ironic twist. Given that my training program has altered my meal and hunger patterns, I may start to have trouBle consuming enough calories to keep myself going adequately.

Oh woe is me, I can't seem to eat enough - I doubt you'll get much sympathy from the rest of us about that particular problem. :lmao: Of course, the reason that's the case is a different story altogether :scared1:

You need Girl Scout cookies!!

Must be a tri thing...I've been absolutely ravenous this week...but I think my sprint tri is not gonna give me the calorie cushion your IM training is.

I LOOOOOOOVVVVVEEEEEEEEE Girl Scout cookies (Darcy was the troop Cookie Mom 2 years), however they are way off of my wheat-free, sugar-free diet right now? :(

Sprint training isn't quite the same calorie burner, although sprint training can be the gateway to longer tri's. ;)

Uh-oh. Back to back postings = kiss of death, right? I have had a crazy-nutso time since I got home, but wanted to share the best photo I have from the race. Unfortunately, the ones before dawn (in MK) were not so good - my stupid camera. I'll post them later, but here's one of me and John - we were lucky we got this one, actually, cause I'd ditched him to speed up about 100 feet earlier, then saw there was no line for Chip & Dale and, of course....stopped  Thankfully, he jumped in when he saw me!

I shoveled a bunch last night and today, Bodypump. It's the last day they are doing the "New Release" so I'm excited to see what's new.

Great picture! :thumbsup2

I don't know about you, Richard, but lately, I've been feeling very grateful that I was lucky enough to be randomly assigned to THIS particular team. I've been happy with it all along, mind you, and maybe I'd feel this way whichever team I was on, but so many of my very, very favorite WISHers are from this thread and I'm just very grateful!

:grouphug:

First, I completely agree with you on your team assessment. We use the term "family" pretty openly here, but you all really do feel like family to me.

I couldn't agree more! :grouphug:

Hi cousins! I hope everyone's week went well and you're all looking forward to a great weekend. I wanted to let you guys know that part III of my Goofy Challenge report has been posted on my blog. I finally got my pictures and videos from ASI and was able to finish everything up last night.

http://jmsenger.blogspot.com

Well, almost everything. I still need to figure out how to edit the ASI videos down to just the 10-15 seconds I need and then get it posted, but I can work on that this weekend. I need to get Marathon Monday and our Drink Around the World adventure written up too. Guess this weekend won't be as relaxing as I first though. ;)

Speaking of the ASI pictures, has anyone else noticed that the dates and times are all out of whack? I downloaded all of my photos and videos from both races, and for example, I've got marathon pictures with a date of Jan 8, 2011, and videos dated Jan 20, 2011. :confused3

Hello cousins! Count me in - I love being part of this family! :goodvibes

The kids have a snow day today, so I've been able to catch up a bit here this morning.

Maria - Thanks for sharing your great race report. I'm so happy for you! It's great that you will be able to get your official time, which is also great. :thumbsup2

Corinna - How was your race? (Sorry if you posted about it and I missed it). How is the big painting going?

John - Awesome race report! It must have been so cool to hear your name called at the finish. I may have to try that left lane strategy next year. I've always gone straight to the characters. :upsidedow

Mel - A no sew tutu is the only way I could ever make one. I'm so not creative. Oh, and the 50 by 50 idea sounds awesome! :cool1:

Jackie - I hope that you get good news from your doctor. A trip to Ireland would definitely be worth missing WDW. :shamrock:

Kathy - Sorry to hear that your flight was cancelled, but at least you got to spend an extra day in Disney. I always secretly wish this would happen on our flights home, but so far, no luck. Good luck with your new job!

Richard - Congrats on your weight loss. I love reading about your weight loss success as well as all of your training. You are an inspration. :worship:

Rose - It's great to hear that you've found a solution to your nausea issues. :thumbsup2

Jen B - I love the stomping on the mat idea! I've never had an issue with my time not being recorded, and I hope I never will now that I know to stomp on the mats. :) Good luck at the dentist! I hope everything goes smoothly.

Debra - I'm glad that you were able to accomplish your running goals. :cool1: It's a great feeling when you're pleased with your race. As for running in single digits, I've been doing it too. You're right, sweaty black tights definitely cling in all the wrong places (although I don't seem to have any right places these days, except maybe my ankles :confused3).

As for me, not much to report. I had finally gotten better to commiting to a schedule for running - and then we had a snowstorm. Then another one. And today, another one. I'm forcing myself out there tomorrow, even if I'm running in knee-deep snow. My DH (Rob) and I were planning to run our own half at the end of Feb, but that's been pushed back to sometime in March because of my lack of training. I'm determined to get back on track though. I know I've gained some weight recently and running regularly will help me get rid of those pounds.

Good luck to all of you who will be doing the Princess! :goodvibes

Woops, sorry, guys! I think I might be getting left behind just a little. Or rather falling behind....you guys won't leave me behind, I know!

Busy times with Andrew's show, 'Art' opening next weekend. I'm designing the program and painting the painting that the show is about (plus a back-up body-double of same) and also doing some set dressing stuff because apparently the scenic designer bailed a week ago? WTH, people? WTH? So...I'm once again picking up the pieces during tech week, it seems. :sad2: I'll post photos when it's all done.

Fitness-wise, I've been running a "cutback" week this week - 3 days of 5 miles. One day of bodypump - crazily, my former priest (she's almost 70!!) needed to find 6 people to be in her class while she made her "test" video. They have to make a video of themselves leading a class to get certified. With me, she had exactly 6 people (and one no-show). She did great, I thought, and I hope she passes. What an inspiration she is - I think she's found the fountain of youth!

Richard - I have to say, eating to keep up with Tri-training sounds a lot less fun (and more challenging) if you can't have gluten or sugar. :sad1: Also, I told a marathoning friend that if I did Goofy next year, I would have to ride Expedition Everest. He looked at me, his eyes bugged out and he said "DURING the race???" He was concerned that the tensing up on a roller coaster at that portion of the race would be...unfortunate. I told him I knew someone who had done it, and with great success! :)
