Team 'Ohana--No One Left Behind: The Continuing Adventures

Good Morning, Cousins!

I'm off to yoga in a bit, but first wanted to check in...for those of you that don't know, Katee Sackhoff played Starbuck in Battlestar Galactica, and is currently a CTU agent on 24. I really enjoy her work, so I'm hoping her pilot gets picked up!

I'll add my Welcome! to Mandy!

Jackie -- Whether you PR or not, I really hope you enjoy Sunday's Half! :thumbsup2

Corinna -- I saw your Princess photos, and now I really want to go! Of course, we will have to see how things shake out this summer, and I'm a little concerned about trying to do 2 Halfs that close, but I'm sure I can figure it out :goodvibes

Ok, gotta get my chivasa (sp?) on!

Maria :upsidedow

Welcome Mandy! We're glad to have you here! Congrats on setting your half-marathon goal, too. You're absolutely right that you CAN do that, and we'll always be here to support you along the way.

Nicole, here's my two cents worth of shoe advice: keep trying to find one that fits well and is comfortable for you when you run. Nothing is worse than running on shoes that, while they may be correct for you, cause nothing but discomfort. Definitely try different brands too. I hated the Brooks Adrenaline model that was recommended for me, and I absolutely love the Asics Kayano I have been using ever since I gave up on the Brooks. Both models are designed to have the same sort of support and stability, but I can't wear the Brooks without getting pain in my knee and ITB. Maybe the same type of thing will be true for you. Maybe Asics isn't the brand for you and another one is.

Welcome Mandy! Alway nice to have new people around here.

Jeanne: Continued good luck with wedding planning.

Nicole: I don't have great shoe advice either other than trying a bunch of different styles/brands until one feels right. I agree that if it doesn't feel right in the store more miles will not make it any better. I love your pictures from Princess. It makes me want to carry my camera for the next race.

Kathy: Enjoy Tobacco Road.

Richard: I'm with you on the daylight savings time thing. I'm having a tough time adjusting although I do like the sunlight later in the evening.

Things have been busy as usual around here. I was on call this weekend and picked up an extra day of work this week to help a coworker so I'm a bit tired. We were nearly flooded out this weekend with torrential rain (this year is definitely one of weather extremes-- if it snows there are over 20", if it rains it is near monsoon. The sun was out today and it was absolutely gorgeous. DD6 and I took lots of outdoor time looking for acorns and worms.

I just got guilted into a 5K this weekend-- a friend we talked into this whole running thing signed up for the race and wants company, basically I couldn't say no. The race does have a catchy name "Get Your Rear in Gear 5K" to support colon cancer research. Hope for some nice Sunday weather for me.

We are going to sign up for the DL 1/2 this week and think we will be staying at the HoJo near the park-- anyone have experience there?

Hope everyone has a good week.

Welcome, Mandy!

Maria - I hope you can do the Princess next year!

Thanks for all the shoe advice, cousins. I'm open to trying another brand, though I think I'd at least try on a more neutral cushioning Asics before I totally give that brand up.
Good call on getting a second opinion - I will do that too. I felt like such a running shoe newbie when I bought the last 2 pairs - I was thinking the running store guy was going to be magic and know exactly what shoe was right for me.
Corinna - I think you make a good point about trying to correct if my feet really do have different gaits - that I may end up messing up the other side either way.
The good news is that the pair I ran the half in are good. I don't totally love them, but I think they have enough cushioning to continue training in them.
The better news is that I think I figured out a way to decrease my hip pain. I have aches/discomfort in my right hip mainly during the winter months. (Chiropractor thinks this is mainly from dance/ballet training loosening stuff too much) It's not constant and doesn't bother me when running. Anyway, I was reading a book called Running Well, and it talks about running form. It talks about hips being forward or tucked under. I realize that when I'm walking if I do this, my hip doesn't hurt.

Hello everyone! I haven't checked in a week and a half or so and I feel so behind.

Congrats to everyone who completed the Princess Half. I loved seeing the pictures from it and seeing those helps me stay motivated about the WDW 2011 race. I'd love to do the Princess 1/2 one day. The medal is so cute!

Corinna - How sweet of you to run the 5K with your friend and congrats on lifetime (ww). And great time on the 5K, especially so soon after the princess half.

Jen - congrats on your little one and hats off to you for running already! I wish I hadn't put off exercise after my babies were born.

Jeanne - It sounds like you are knee deep in wedding excitement - enjoy it!

Mandy - Welcome! This is a very warm, welcoming and encouraging group so dive right in. I am an Army vet (served 4 years, '96 - '00) and now an Army wife, so you have some military friends here. :thumbsup2 We are stationed overseas right now and love it! Where is your BF? Is he in the AF?

As for me, my little plan that I made has been working out so well and I'm SO glad that I backed it off and started easy, as if I were starting to run new again. I'm finished with weeks 1, 2 and 3 and half way into week 4. Week 3 was a piece of cake because I didn't have to run at all - which felt weird. The trainer who I got the training plan from says that runners who enter into a training plan tend to get injuries in week 3, so he recommends no running in week 3. It felt weird though and I'm glad to be past that week. It's still so cold and gray here in Vienna. I'm actually cheering the cold weather on for just 2 more weeks because we want to go skiing one more time. I mean, when in Austria! :cool1: Our ski trip is planned for the week before Easter so it could get warm and I really don't want it too. After Easter, all bets are off though and I'll be ready for some nice spring weather.

As for the time change, we haven't turned our clocks ahead yet in Central Europe. I think we do it this weekend. It's been nice all week to be one hour "closer" to my family and friends back in the States.

So are there any other college hoops fans here getting excited about March Madness? Or am I the only only basketball nut here? LOL I'm a HUGE fan and I need to finish filling out my bracket tonight as the action starts tomorrow.

Count me in. We're die-hard Duke fans, so bring it on! The television will be on non-stop for the next 3 weekends, regardless of who's playing.

Kerry-The BF is Navy and stationed in San Antonio. I'm taking leave to go visit next weekend. Neither of us has been overseas yet, although I may get a good TDY this summer, fingers crossed.

I have been running or power walking this past week. I really want to get in to long distances but I have my physical readiness test next month so I have working toward a good mile and a half run time. I think I need a pair of shoes for the walks tho. I have a great pair of running shoes (Asics) but some times when walking they just don't feel right. It's hard to explain. So walking shoes is on the list for next weekend in San Antonio since I need some new workout clothes too and Chris promised to go shopping with me. I'm so spoiled. All I have are my Air Force PT gear (which I don't love) and some sweats and tee shirts. Not too comfortable for working out. And since my weight is droping I need something cuter :cutie:

Hey there, Mandy! :welcome:

Welcome back, Kerry!

Nicole...I have high arches and need a cushioned shoe. I used to wear ASICs but now alternate Saucony and Mizuno. I would also get another opinion from a different shoe place if you can.

Jackie...good luck this weekend! We'll be racing together, but a few miles apart.

Maria...what's your chivasa and wear does one wear it? Come be a princess next year!

Good luck on the 5K this weekend, Jen!

Jeanne...good luck with the weddings!

I'm also not a fan of the spring forward deal, though I do appreciate it more in the summer when the days last longer.

For St. Patty's Day, we channeled our Scots-Irish heritage and had Irish Beef Stew, green Irish soda bread, green choc chip snack cake (made by the girls) and mint chocolate chip ice cream bars. I haven't had the cake or ice cream yet...still stuffed from stew and green bread. This after blueberry and chocolate pies to 'celebrate' Pi day on Sunday. We need fewer holidays that involve food :thumbsup2

I'm having trouble with this last season of Lost. Too much jumping around I think.

Hey Mel! -- I know I spelled it wrong -- that's the last pose we do, where we lay down on our mats, cover up with a blanket and close our eyes. It feels delicious after a really good stretch. On days when we're having "super relaxation yoga", we bring eye masks and spend the entire hour laying down covered, listening to very new agey music. My dh calls it my "$5 nap", but I'm not complaining!

That sounds like my kind of yoga! I'd love to join a class but I don't think I can commit to something else right now.

Your green food and Irish stew sound delicious! I was a little bummed not to get any Irish food today. I stopped at Target and picked up a suspect Irish soda bread.
Thanks for the shoe ideas. It's nice to get brand recommendations from someone you know. I think I will go back to cushioned shoes. :thumbsup2

Oh man, it is late and it's quite a week, but I wanted to check in. There's a lot of stuff on my plate already this week and then I get a couple of text messages from my dad:

My grandfather is in the hospital tonight with what seems to be congestive heart failure. It's apparently not a huge crisis and the doctors say they think they're going to be able to get him straightened out, but any prayers you can spare would still certainly be appreciated. He had his first heart attack when I was a little girl, but he's a great old guy. It's a miracle he's lived this long and the reason he has is because of his dedication to his post-heart-surgery diet and regular activity.

I'm also coaching (trying to coach) over at the BL thread. It's not as crazy as it was, but I'm still struggling to keep up. I hope you'll forgive me for not catching up better over here tonight. I think I need to get some sleep.

Hi Cousins! Back from Italy and trying to check in at various places. Did the virtual 10K yesterday and it felt good. Walked my feet off in Rome, so I guess I did not "lose" as much as I feared with a week off from my routine.

I hope to have time to catch up later with what has been going on since I was away. Corinna, you bet prayers for your GF and family are on the way.

Christine -- Welcome Back! I hope your trip was spectacular, and can't wait to hear a few details! Great job with the 10K so soon after your vacation! :cool1:

Corinna -- Sending prayers and pixiedust:, hoping this weekend improves for you. Coaching on the BL thread is a full-time job, and really hard when life interferes. Just do what you can, that's the best any of us can do :goodvibes

Nicole -- If this yoga class wasn't offered at work, I'd never make it. They've made it so easy, I don't have to think about finding time for it! :thumbsup2

Mandy -- It sounds like you have some great shopping planned for next weekend -- enjoy your trip! :)

Jackie -- I just filled out my bracket. I got my MA at Illinois, but I don't feel any real allegiance. I picked Villanova to win it all. :confused3

Kerry -- I hope you get your last skiing trip in. I've never skied, but I would think Austria would be an incredible place to do it! ::yes::

JenB -- I hope you enjoy the 5K this weekend! This rain has been crazy, huh?! I am still considering the DL Half (gotta make sure dh doesn't get laid off in June first -- we don't think it's likely, but you never know), and the hotel I've been scoping out is the HoJo's. It looks fabulous and the new water park area for kids seems amazing!

John, Richard, Jeanne, Allie, Debra, Jen -- Sending :hippie: to everyone, I hope you're having a great week, and not suffering too much from DST and :shamrock:

Hey Cousins... I was doing so well earlier this week and then it all blew up. I have been on the run with non-running activities since Thursday and it doesn't stop until tomorrow. I don't know how I did this when I was working FT! Then yesterday my laptop blew up.... seriously it went totally dead. Thankfully I have some IT background (and DH is IT), so I was able to get it to re-build all by myself (proud moment!). But I lost a bunch of work that I was doing and it also put me behind yesterday. Made me a little mad!

Laurel had her 2 month check up yesterday, complete with 3 shots. Poor baby. She is smaller than I thought, but doctor isn't concerned. Emma was really low on the growth charts and is a tall kid now. Kate was super high on the growth charts and is tall as well. I have the tall gene!

OH and my doctor is the best. She asked me if I had gotten back to running yet. Of course I told her I was trying to and was starting to train for a 1/2 marathon. She asked me to get on her in two months at the next appointment to make sure SHE started back at running because she doesn't make the time to do it. She is a casual runner and just does it for exercise and stress relief... but its great having someone on your side. OH and my weight was 4 pounds higher at the doctor than at home... irked me!

Mel - Yummy eats at your house! I am coming to live with you! Kate was asking about Lenna the other day. Hope she is doing well and staying out of trouble. Kate is trying but not always succeeding!

Corinna - Hope things have turned around for your grandfather.

Jackie - This is the first year I am NOT doing a Final 4 Bracket. I feel so bad about that. I just haven't had the time to keep up with it and I totally forgot to fill out my brackets. Boooo hooooo!

Hi Team!! I 've been off several days because of a hectic work and home life, and finding out the Boards have been so busy while I was gone that I'm not sure I can keep all the updates straight.

Mandy - A big welcome to you! I think you'll find this group here to be a great place to come to as you take on your half marathon goals.

JenL - My experience is that doctor's scales read several pounds higher than other scales, too.

Maria - I hadn't picked up on the latest 24 season. Is it worth watching? On a side note, it is the only program I have worn a heart monitor while watching just to see how high my heart rate got during the more intense parts. :lmao:

JenB - I've been guilted into many things before, but never a race--but I love the name!

Christine - Welcome back to the country, hope you enjoyed the trip!

Corinna - Prayers for your family, I never knew my grandfathers as each of my parents lost their father while growing up, so I hope all works out for you guys.

Mel - I'm loving your holiday food celebrations--I completely missed Pi Day this year.

...and to everyone else, maybe I'll have to to catch up better over the weekend...

Jackie - Oh my, I'm a Villanova fan! Remember that Final 8 game last year??? ;) And to think our teams could meet again. I too am totally addicted to the tourney and have been watching the games this evening (night, my time) for a few hours now. :rolleyes1 Villanova had a nasty scare and there have been some AMAZING games so far. I love March Madness!

Mandy - San Antonio is so much fun! Enjoy your trip to visit your BF. Where might you go TDY?

Mel - Yum! I usually do an Irish meal, but skipped it this year as I didn't plan well. Your menu sounded delicious. I did make my kids some lime jello though.

Christine - We are visiting Rome in a few weeks too! I've been once before, but that was before we had the kids. I'm so excited to take the kids to Rome. What was your favorite site? Where did you stay? My husband has to go there for work so we are tagging along.

Corinna - I'm so sorry about your grandfather. He's in my thoughts. :grouphug:

Jen - Don't beat yourself up for an off week. Life does get in the way sometimes, but it sounds like you have a good plan to keep on keeping on.

So are there any other college hoops fans here getting excited about March Madness? Or am I the only only basketball nut here? LOL I'm a HUGE fan and I need to finish filling out my bracket tonight as the action starts tomorrow.

Count me in! I've been running a pool for 16 years now. I've only won it once, which I guess is a good thing. If I won it more often, people might think it was rigged. I'm hoping your team does well because I've got them in the Final Four. :)

Corinna - I'm sorry about your grandfather. I hope everything turns out okay for him.

Maria, I love savasana too! It always feels so good to be still and relax for a little bit after a nice hard yoga workout.

I'll try to catch up with everything in more detail this weekend. Right now, puppy class calls.

Corinna - How sweet of you to run the 5K with your friend and congrats on lifetime (ww). And great time on the 5K, especially so soon after the princess half.

I don't do it too often, but I really enjoy dragging a friend through a race. I enjoy it less when I'm the friend being dragged. But that can be good too. I have a friend who calls that kind of running together (when you have divergent paces but stick together anyhow) a "boat-anchor" race. I'd rather be the boat, but being the anchor, it is fun to be challenged, too!

Really - no runs in week 3? How innovative!

:grouphug: Thanks to all the Ohana cousins for the prayers and kind thoughts for my grandfather. It sounds like he is stable and they are taking good care of him. They expect him to be in the hospital a few more days at least, and there is a bit of pneumonia that they are treating as well. I am crossing my fingers and hoping for the best!

Today was the last day of my YMCA fit club. I lost...maybe 1/2 a pound? Really, I have been maintaining within about a 3 pound range since January. But my measurements are all down and my body fat % is down 1.2%, so that's kind of nice! Oh, we Minnesotans are so understated in our glee. I can't help but wonder just what % exactly a person has to get down to for these last unsightly parts to go away. They say there is no such thing as spot reduction, but seriously, the "trouble" spots are all that is left now! Move it, already!

I have seriously felt like eating the whole entire house the past few days. There might have been a BIT of stress contributing. It's been "medicating" eating, for sure. I'm not proud of it, but apparently it still happens occasionally. Tonight was the belt tests for Kung Fu. I'm up to 3rd Purple, and my kids each moved up a level as well. This was the last group test - next time I won't get to follow along with the kids on either side. :sad2: I am also concerned about my ability to get the painting for Suburb done in the time allotted. It's a lot more detail work than I expected and that, for goodness sakes, takes time.

Off I go - lots to do before I sleep tonight. Have a good evning, cousins, and thanks again for being here.

A quick post this AM -- I realize Julie is the only one who may get this -- Our family is absolutely ecstatic this morning! Yesterday afternoon we received notification ds has been accepted into Boston Latin School! It is highly competitive, and we feel like we've been working for 9 months to get him in -- it's like a pregnancy! Less than 25% of applicants were accepted, we are so proud of ds! He spent 3 months studying for the exam, and he also maintained an A+ average the entire time (which you kind of have to do to get in).

Right now, I can do the happy dance without any guilt -- none of the other 6th graders in his school were eligible since they are not residents of the City. Once we start to hear about his other friends and whether they made it or not, I'll probably have a bit of "survivor's guilt". Anyway, just sending out very happy vibes this morning! :woohoo:
