Team 'Ohana--No One Left Behind: The Continuing Adventures

Aww Allie, I saw that news and thought about you and my family in AL as well. I'm sorry to hear your community is going through another tragic event. There's nothing wrong with coming by here for support.

Thanks Richard! I know you know what it's like. This a university we are considering sending our son too, but now, am questioning all universities. How did someone like this "slip through the cracks". I know she wasn't ever charged with anything, but there are a lot of pieces that don't add up. Just like our other case with the 14 year old boys. :confused3 Just makes a mama scared.

Allie

It is scary. You almost feel afraid to send your kids to school because you never know how the day will end. The doctor I work for just bought a building for a new office. The building was vacant because a nurse came in one summer day a couple years ago, shot and killed the office manager, then went home and killed herself.

In other news, I actually gave notice at my job today. I will be starting a new job as an assistant professor at a local pharmacy school in May. Should be fun!

hmmm...catsuits and Xena...sounds like a typical day at Team Ohana headquarters.

JenB...congrats on 10 miles w/o intervals. You're my new role model.

John...we definitely need to see pictures.

Jackie...sorry 'bout Myrtle Beach. That must have been a strange experience.

Terri...is the hip pain new?

John: Please post pictures of you in the dress-- sounds like a really fun event

Your wish is my command :)

Just makes a mama scared.
It scares all of us Allie. You are certainly not alone there, but life can't be lived from inside protective walls without taking any chances--but that still doesn't make it any easier to accept.
Sometimes the hard part of life is learning how to take risks without being reckless--and it's even harder to watch your children learn those same lessons.

John - Fishnet stockings, too. (Woohoo!!)

Mel - Team Ohana is only typical in its "atypicalness" (or would that be "antitypicalness"?) Good luck with the new job, I have a sneaky suspicion that you'll love it!

Jackie - Good work on making the best of a less than ideal situation at MB. Did you see what Runner's World had to say about MB race? Actually, I believe Coco got some bagel pieces (just not her own), but given the chance she'd have quickly scarfed one down. About the only food I have found so far that she won't eat are limes--specifically from a Sonic Cherry Limeade.

Allie:

John: Awesome picture:cool1: The fishnets definitely make the outfit. I personally would find it tough to run in them :rolleyes1

Mel: I'm not sure I'm any kind of role model. I just felt that I was in a rut with training and wanted to challenge myself to do a bit more. We'll see how well it works on Princess weekend. Congrats on the new job, I'm sure you'll like it. I'm getting really tired of my job, but not sure what else I would do, so I stay...

Terri: Good luck with fighting the headache. I'm impressed you are getting in any workouts at all-- a migraine would be excuse enough for me to bail.

My only news is that our good friends (the one who comes with us to Disney to babysit) just got engaged on Valentines Day.:bride: DD6 and I will be in the wedding-- even more motivation for me to finally lose the weight. They are planning on getting married on 12-11-10, a pretty cool date if you ask me.

Good Morning, team!

Allie - there are days when staying home to hide under the covers is the only thing that makes sense. I'd heard the story of the shooting - how incredibly painful for everyone involved! Sending thoughts and prayers to all those who are hurting.....

As for me - I haven't been back to the gym since Sunday. Really stiff and sore the last couple of days - can't say I've ever had pain in those places before. Would have been happy with just a hot bath - but sometimes the job gets in the way! Able to keep the migraine at bay - good thing, since those - when they hit hard - have me out of commission for a good three days!

Headed back for a slow workout today, to see how the hips and back handle it.

Have a good day all! I'm very impressed with how you all are doing!

Terri

Richard - I read the RW commentary last night. Pretty much agreed with both sides of the argument too! I loved some of the comments from the readers, particularly those who were there. The marathon website has a letter to the participants now that really captures the spirit of the weekend, basically a testament to the determination of runners who can make the best of anything. And I'm glad Coco got her bagel!

Allie - Having a college freshman this year, I have to second what Richard said about taking risks. I have to keep my fingers crossed that the university community will take care of her, and that she will learn to take care of herself at the same time. We don't tell her dad when she hears about attacks on campus, but hope that she is smart enough to learn from what she hears and do the right thing.

Mel - Congratulations! Lots of excitement with a new job. Is this an extended notice, or are you taking some time off between jobs?

John - Wow! 'Nuff said.

JenB - Yep, you're a role model. DH and I went to the track yesterday, and I attempted the entire warmup mile without breaks. (Didn't quite succeed, but that was more due to the hill and the WIND than to my fitness level.) The whole time I kept thinking "Jen did 10 miles!"

Workout 1 - complete. As I told Jen, I did the warmup mile (and almost bailed on the entire run. The wind was so strong it felt like I wasn't making any forward motion at all.) Then I did what was supposed to be 25:00 of hard running, but I adapted to 15:00 of R3/W1 at a really hard pace. My first mile averaged 10:45 with the walk breaks, so I was exerting a little effort. Then I ran another mile with NO breaks to cool down. Not exactly a cool down, but more of a challenge. And considering that 1/4 of the track was into a headwind, not a bad workout. There was just no way I was going to survive the 25:00 that the plan called for! Have I mentioned that I'm tired of cold weather?

Jackie

Just checking in. Haven't felt like posting or reading for that matter.

For those of you who don't know, we had another tragedy in our town. Last Friday, the same day that the 14 year old boy, that was shot last week, was laid to rest, we had another shooting at our local university. A professor shot and killed 3 other professors, and injured 3 more. :sad2:

I haven't had anything positive to add, so I've just stayed away. Sorry :grouphug:

Although, I did do the Virtual Valentine race. We had a local race here on Sunday. It had a 2 mile and a 4 mile. I did both!!! :thumbsup2 I did the 2 mile in 24:52, and the 4 mile in 55:13. Not bad considering due to the weather, sick kiddos, and the craziness lately, I haven't run since Feb. 1st. :headache:

I just wanted to check in so my cousins knew I was still here. :goodvibes
I'm sorry you've felt the need to stay away, but I understand. I'm glad you've checked back in though. I can't believe that 2nd shooting was also nearby. I'm so sorry to hear that your area has suffered another tragedy like this.
Congrats on getting back out there and running last weekend!

Jackie
I'm tired of cold weather too! But more than that, I'm tired of icy roads and sidewalks! I've only had two outdoor runs since fall (and one of those was in WDW). I'm just paranoid of twisting my knee. I had knee surgery when I was 13 and a big injury of the same knee when I was 20 - so no ice for me!
Kudos to you for getting out there in the cold wind!

I skipped my running workout last night - I was just totally exhausted and I'm fighting a sinus infection. But unless I'm falling over, I will be running tonight! I'm also getting back into walking on my lunch break at work. Gets me out of the chair, away from the computer, and a little extra exercise.

Well, I've inspired DH to start running. He started a few weeks ago and is doing his own version of C25k. Basically, he runs for a mile, then does run/walk intervals however often he feels like until he gets to 3 miles. LOL But I guess he's pretty into it - he bought one of those Nike+ shoe things that work with his iPhone. I think I may be able to talk him into a jogging stroller, so we can run outside together with DD when it gets warmer!

Gotta love the fishnets, John! Not sure I could pull off that look either, Jeanne!!

Allie, sorry to hear about the 2d tragedy so close on the heels of the other shooting. I know your town is just reeling.

Terri, I hope you are feeling better. I know it is difficult to get motivated to workout when you are feeling lousy.

Tracy, good job getting your husband off of the couch. That jog stroller sounds like a fun idea. I hope the weather gets warm enough for that soon!!

Mel, congrats on the new job! Hope this is a good change for you.

Richard, good job keeping current with your doctor visits. :thumbsup2

Jackie, good job on that run!! You will be doing that with no walk breaks before you know it!!

Other cousins :grouphug: to all of you! Sorry, so far I am having trouble keeping all of you straight to respond to everyone. Please bear with me!!

Jen - 11:30 at the Poly Food Court sounds perfect to me! I had suggested a slightly later time, but I think I like this better as this leaves time for a dash through the Magic Kingdom before the meet at POR food court at 5pm. When the race gets closer, we can start each post with a time and place reminder for both meets.

Nicole - your snacks sound good! A great plan to try them out before the race and see what you like / what sits well, as well as how frequently you want to use them. Here's my formula (make of it what you will) - on a run of 6-7 miles or more, if I've had breakfast earlier, I usually start with the fuel around mile 3 - eat one or two, then another "dose" about every other mile, depending on when I start to feel "draggy" again. This whole "Eat one pack before the workout and another during and another after" or whatever it suggests on the package. To me, that always seems excessive for my needs, anyhow.

The TM is calling my name again today - a nice 3 miles. Then food shopping and a trip to REI - gotta love REI. I am only shopping for kids snow pants, though. I am only shopping for kids snow pants. If I say it enough times, might believe it. :thumbsup2
Thanks for the advice on the running snacks.
How did your REI trip go? We went on Saturday not knowing it was a huge winter clearance sale - score! We got DD her Columbia winter coat and Kamuk (sp?) boots for next year for $30 total.
Do you know any more about the discounts at Run n Fun? Seriously, every item we purchased including clothing was less than the price on the tag. Do they always do that?

Other cousins :grouphug: to all of you! Sorry, so far I am having trouble keeping all of you straight to respond to everyone. Please bear with me!!
I'm still learning, too!

I got in my 4 mile TM moderate paced run last night (after postponing from Tuesday). It was okay. I felt more tired than I'd like at that pace, but I never felt awful or like I needed to stop. I wish I could get in a higher intensity XT workout tonight, but it's DH's turn at the gym and I'm kind of sick of my workout videos. I'll probably end up just doing strength training in my living room while watching the Olympics. ;)

Good Evening, Cousins!

I'm trying to keep up here, but don't hold out much hope -- especially for the coming week. Starting tomorrow I'm coaching on the BL thread, which means I will spend all my time waiting for Corinna and Nicole to post so I can give them extra-cousinly replies! :grouphug:

I'm happy to report my goal of actually hitting my workouts for Lent is on track. Yes, two days into it and I haven't missed one yet :rolleyes1 I ran 5M on the TM this morning, which felt good since I haven't run since Saturday. I have been doing alot of incline walking and getting into the Wii BL, so I guess I'm becoming more well-rounded, but I will get more running in next week.

Nicole -- I am totally with you on the "strength training while I watch the Olympics!". I feel guilty sitting there, so I end up at least doing some bicep curls. Hey, it can't hurt! :thumbsup2

Christine -- I am learning all the new cousins, it's like we have an entire new branch of the family -- more to love! :lovestruc

John -- You are rockin' that red dress! Reminds me of a song about a woman named Roxanne...:lmao:

Jackie -- Where can we send this cold weather? There has to be someplace that would appreciate it! :confused3

Terri -- How is your soreness? It can be rough when you work new muscles, just ask my stomach :rotfl:

JenB -- How fun to be in a wedding! :bride: I have a feeling you are going to be smokin' hot in your new finery!

Allie -- :grouphug: No words of wisdom, but know you are thought about and wished peace and good things for the future.

Mel -- :tigger: for your new position!

Jeanne -- You, my dear, are one red hot mama! If you want to Catwoman it, I'm sure Batman John will not be far behind! I wonder what the Greek relatives would think of that? :rotfl2:

Julie -- How is vacation week treating you? Dennis took a group of boys snow tubing today. I was perfectly contect to go to work. :goodvibes

Debra -- I took ds to see The Lightning Thief yesterday. Yes, there were plot holes you could drive a truck through, and my ds now has way too much knowledge of Rosario Dawson's cleavage, but it wasn't too bad for the genre. I got to look at Kevin McKidd, which we all know renders the quality of the film inconsequential ;)

All the Cousins I'm Missing -- :wave2: Sorry, I know I missed some, but if I don't eat now ds may not make it. Hungry those tweens are!

Maria :upsidedow

Maria - Surely there's a country in the southern hemisphere that needs some cold. Or maybe Hawaii? Jeff was posting about 80-something degree temps the other day, I think? On the positive side, our temp actually reached 49 today. I kept hoping for 50, just for the psychological boost, but I don't think it got there. We are supposed to reach 59 on Sunday - may have to break out the shorts! :lmao:

Nicole/Corinna
- I am deliberately staying away from REI. Must not go. Must not go. I'm on their email list, so they've been pounding me with announcements of the clearance sale.

Nicole
- Great job getting your husband into it. I actually wasn't sure how DH and I would do running together, but we've really gotten the hang of it this year. I rarely run alone now, and I'm getting very spoiled. We were just talking tonight about the changes in the past year - he had no interest in distances and has now done 2 full marathons and 3 halfs, and I never thought I could run at the pace I'm running now but have adapted while trying to keep up with him!

Workout #2 complete. Original plan when we left home was to do R/W for a mile, run nonstop for 3, then R/W the last mile. I apparently forgot to let my legs/ankles in on the plan, and after mile 2 (the first one I ran nonstop) my ankle/Achilles was killing me. I did a R3/W1 for the 3rd mile, then ran the next 1.25 without a break. I'll call it a success, even though I didn't run all 3, since I really thought I was going to have to walk it for the majority. Apparently I need to do a longer, slower warmup, since once I'm 2-3 miles into the run I feel fine.

Jackie

Jackie - My brother in Australia would love a blast of that cold weather about now. his school went without air conditioning for a while. I may even make the 60's on Sunday...and then the cold and rain return!

Maria - Good luck on your BL coaching next week.

Christine, Nicole - It does take a while to keep up with everyone here.

Jen - 10 straight miles, I am impressed and so want to be there too one of these days.

I'm coming off my busiest week of the month at work, culminating in the monthly Directors meeting next Monday night. (and then I coast through another month  ). Lately it seems it is just problem after problem, but at least I have a good job that I like.

Also, I just so want to gripe about the cold weather sometimes, but somehow my complaints about having ice on the windshield every morning doesn't quite compare with what some of you have to deal with.

I had to tell my Operations Manager about that plane crashing into the building in Austin this morning as his ex-wife works for the IRS there. Fortunately, she works at in another building and was not in that one (although she had been to that site before).

That's all for now, there's Olympics to be watching!

Happy Friday!

I'm finding that work is getting in the way of my training! I have to work late today, so had to cancel my training appointment. That's just so wrong....

My hips are better - the pain was on the outside of both hips, and I was really stiff. But it's better, and I was able to hop on the bike on Wednesday for a while without any pain to speak of. Progress!

There are times when watching the news is so disheartening - all I can do is say a few prayers for all hurt by the events. So sad....

Have a good day, all!

Hello Cousins! I'm not sure how the week got away from me so quickly Some of it was spent on the War on Snow. Some was spent running countless errands (though alarmingly I never did make it to REI!) Some of it was spent working out, though there has been more than one workout that did not go according to plan. I didn't get to spin class on Wednesday in time to get a bike, so I rode on a regular one in the fitness center for half an hour and decided, yeah, that's enough. Yesterday, I intended to do 11 miles on the TM (suxor) and bailed after 5. Not like me, I know. Here's why: in my enthusiasm, I failed to take an actual REST day after that 5K on Saturday where I pulled out all the stops. Today is hereby designated as a rest day. Except that the sun is shining and I'm likely to go out and chip away at The Glacier a little more while I can and before we get any worse flooding in the street down there.

Here's some shoutouts:

Allie: :hug: I am so, so sorry about the tragedies in your city so close together. They are both so disturbing, and I agree, it definitely makes a mama nervous, especially when they are so close to home. I wish there were more that any of us could do. I'm so glad you got your Valentine's races. Look at you, doing BOTH local races! WTG!

Richard: I have avoided REI, though I did actually go to Dick's Sporting Goods and got some snowpants for my taller kid. And it wasn't socks that I just kind of ended up buying as well, but I will admit to buying more than snow gear. Sadly there was nothing in lime. Come on, give me a break - 70% of my running clothes are HUGE now!

Mel - congratulations on your new job! Sounds pretty cool!

John: :rolleyes1 - closest thing they have to a wolf whistle - sorry about the rolling eyes part. Looks like a great race for a great cause, that's for sure! Glad you had fun with it!

JenB - Congratulations to your friend on her engagement! How exciting! You can absolutely be at your goal weight by 12.11.10 - is the wedding going to be at 9? Probably not - either would be a bummer time for a wedding! My training for the Princess has definitely been...unconventional at best. Are you going for a PR, Victory Lap or something in between?

Terri - sounds like some rest was in order if you were feeling that ragged. Glad it paid off and you're feeling better now!

Nicole - I'm with you on the ice - it's so slick out there right now. Frankly, I prefer packed snow to a thin layer of bare pavement with ice on either side. I have only done races outside since the fall. I am sooo looking forward to spring! WTG inspiring your DH to run! Sounds like he is serious if he bought a NIKE foot pod! I have no real clue about the Run N Fun discounts at all. I think I saved a bunch last time I was in as well - maybe a winter clearance special? The way that this running stuff works is they come out with new stuff every few months, I think, so they're almost always trying to clear something out. :confused3 Last time I bought shoes, they had some buy one pair get a discount on the second pair, so that was nice and a little easier to understand cause he said something about it, at least. Did you go to the one on Randolph?

Jeanne - that is ridiculous! John looks good in the dress, but you would look good in it too! Red dress on a blonde= fabulous! In fact, I think it'd be a great MOTB dress on you. Except maybe that bright red is not the most appropriate for MOTB.

Maria - good luck with your coaching on BL this week. It has thinned out a little bit but still, Holy Fright! As my Latin prof used to say. And probably still does.

Christie - You're doing admirably well, keeping up with us here! To tell the truth, I had a hard time keeping everyone straight, too, until I started meeting them in person.

Jackie - good luck avoiding REI! So far I've managed it. You know what I love there? The camping towels. Love them. They are my favorite workout sweat mop ever. I'm not helping, probably...

Hope the recovery from your last run goes OK - sounds like it was a bit uncomfortable at the conclusion.

Richard - as a representative from Minnesota let me just say: go ahead and complain! In this respect, I actually have it easier in the winter: my car is in the garage at night, so I rarely have to scrape it off.

How incredibly distressing about that airplane! So glad your manager's wife was not in that building.

Debra: Hope you and DOOD are hanging in there with the snow and everything else, too. Looking forward to seeing you in a few weeks!

Corinna - I'll cut you all the slack you need to buy better fitting running clothes, you deserve something nice for all that work, and thanks for the permission to gripe about the cold. ;)

Terri - Work with that progress and keep healing up.

Everyone have a great weekend out there!!

Yes, on Randolph. My DD loved their kids area, which she had all to herself. She did not want to leave her playhouse. I knew my shoes would be on sale, but I was surprised about the running skirt.
My DH needs gadgets to keep him motivated. We got the Wii Fit and he didn't use it that much to exercise but it was the first weight tracking that he took an interest in. After we bought that he really did lose a bunch of weight. He reached his goal and started maintaining after just a few months (brat!). He's done well but stopped exercising and increased his calories a little with maintaining. So after 6 mos of maintaining he's gained back about 5 pounds, so he's getting back into exercising.
Sorry you didn't get in a good run, I think you deserve a rest. I'm sure you'll be back on that TM tomorrow or the next day!

As for me: I'm getting up early Saturday and flying with DD to New Jersey. I'm dropping her off at my parents for the week. I'll fly back to MN on Monday afternoon. And my parents will fly her back at the end of the week and hang out for next weekend. I'm hoping to get in an outdoor run while in NJ! Need to get in some workouts to counteract all the cookies my mom made, as well as going to eat at my sister's restaurant on Sunday. (She doesn't own the restaurant, she works in pastry, so of course brings us one of every dessert on the menu!)

Hope everyone enjoys the weekend with time for relaxing and running. :thumbsup2
