Team 'Ohana--No One Left Behind: The Continuing Adventures

Good morning!!

I looked back through my log and noticed that I have not taken a rest day in 13 days!! So, today will be a rest day--from exercise anyway. Gotta try to keep up with this house somehow. Probably back on my TM tomorrow then back to my core routine on Monday.

Nicole I hope you enjoy your trip to NJ and visiting with the folks. How nice that your daughter will get that kind of time with her grandparents!! Good for you for giving her that opportunity.

Richard Sorry to hear about that plane bomber in your part of the country. Do we think the economy is bringing out the crazy in people? Maybe I am odd, but it barely registers for me how much of my check goes to the gov't--I just look at the net and work from there.

Corinna War on snow...I love it! Usually the workout following a disappointing workout is great, so keep at it!! And, yes, you deserve a new workout wardrobe for all your hard work getting your new body. I noticed your 55 pound ribbon in your siggie!

Terri Glad to hear that your hip is doing better. Don't overdo it...it probably still needs time to heal.

Jackie Sounds like you are doing awesome with your runs!! If you plan to do this for life...or at least many years, it is best to build gradually so you don't burn out, or get injured.

Maria Thanks for stepping up to be the coach on the BL thread. I have no idea what that entails...but I am sure it is a lot of work!!

AFM My running store is having a closeout sale today and tomorrow "shoes at unbeleivable prices"! I may wander over there sometime today. My teen is driving me nuts the past 4 days or so...and what a coincidence--I am focusing on forgiveness for lent this year! He is certainly challenging me on that front!! I told my husband I came to the computer to DIS-stress! And, it worked like a charm.

My husband is still recovering from his surgery and not doing all that well this morning with pain. He's back to work and driving, but still needs to really take it easy. Our friend Karen will be here later today to spend the night. She adopted a little girl from Guatamala (single mom) and my husband is taking her (now 5) to a Daddy-Daughter dance that some other friends of ours are sponsoring. I think I will go to a movie with Karen while the others are at the dance--my son usually volunteers (okay, so he is a good kid, he just drives me crazy!!)

Just off the TM after 6M, and Christine -- I am so sorry! I don't know how I missed you're on the BL thread, too! Extra cousinly love will come your way, I promise!

Being a coach is just really a time commitment -- you post the QOTD, and then reply to everyone who posts. I highly recommend it, whenever I coach I always lose that week. I think it's because it's always on your mind, so of course you exercise and eat right!

Gotta jump in the shower -- everyone have a great weekend!

Maria :upsidedow

No worries, Maria. I have never been over to the BL thread! Just seems like it will be a lot of work for you! Maybe I should head over and see what it is all about...

WTG with the TM workout!!! Have a nice shower!!

I found out on another thread that I can put a link to my personal page in my DIS signature. As you can see I have done so!! ;)

Hello everyone! Will you guys take me back? I was a cousin at the beginning of 2009, but then we moved to Austria (my husband is in the military) and I disconnected and never came back. Forgive me. Would I be allowed to join back in? We are still stationed in Austria, and getting ready to move again - to Germany - in a few months, but I AM already registered for the 2011 WDW marathon so I have nothing to run away from now. Only forward!

Let me know if I can join back in!
Kerry

Of course! Once a cousin, always a cousin! :) Welcome back!

Kerry: Of course you are welcome here:hug: Glad to have you back-- you have to tell us about Austria.

John: My new goal is to look as good in a red dress as you do ;)

Corinna: You deserve a rest day and we all have bad work outs every once in a while, give yourself a break. As for my Princess goals :confused3 I like the term "victory lap" I'm not sure what I'm planning to do-- I think I could PR but not sure if I want to work that hard or just have some fun.

AFM: This week was really tough. Thursday at work was filled with tough stuff and just left me burned out. Friday I came down with random viral crud:sick: I shortened my intended 10mi to 8mi due to extreme blah-ness. I spent most of yesterday sleeping (huge thanks to DH for watching the little one while I slept). I feel a bit better today and may try 5 miles tonight to see how it feels.

Can't wait to meet everyone at Princess!!

Thanks guys! I recognize a bunch of names. Do I need to resubmit any info to someone here? Richard, it looks like you are the organizer for 2010, do you need anything from me?

Kerry - I'll get you added to the list. It would be great if you would go look on the first page of this thread and find the suggested bio questions to tell everyone a bit about yourself. You'll find that the team has changed a good bit since you were here last.

Jen - I hope you start getting better soon.

Christine - That is one weird situation (to put it mildly) in Austin. My youngest DD recently paid attention to how much was coming out of her check for the government and it was an eye-opener for her.

Nicole - I hope you got that run in while you were traveling.

As for me, I PR'd in the Run Wild Half Marathon earlier today with a 2:26:45, actually a few seconds faster than my own watch time. I'll write up a report in another post in a bit.

Welcome back, Kerry!! I am one of the new cousins and still learning about everyone.

Richard Congrats on your PR today!!! Seems like you do a lot of events. Guess it beats the old lifestyle! You are an inspiration.

AFM I did end up with a new pair of shoes yesterday. I went too late, however. The set up for the shoe close out at the running store was that hundreds of pairs of shoes were on tables arranged by size. 1 pair for $59 2 pair for $110 3 pair for $150. Several of the store employees were on hand to answer questions about shoes and consult about fit if needed. I got there 4 1/2 hours into the sale and although there were plenty of shoes, only 2 pair in my size!! I have never worn Nike for running before, but snagged a pair of Air Zoom Elite + which felt good on my feet and were trimmed in pink, which clinched it for me. :lovestruc So, $59 instead of $99. There were better bargains to be had, but not in my size. Since my 100 mile walk to Columbus is coming up and I like to change shoes at least once a day I figure it never hurts to have an extra pair of shoes to throw into the rotation.

Not only did I take yesterday as a rest day, but today too. I think I am coming down with a cold or something and instead of going up for a workout after church/lunch today I put on my PJ's and took a nap!! And, I am so not a napper. Got up a couple hours later still feeilng a bit blah, so I am fighting the urge to put on my new shoes and hit the TM. I am really trying to listen to my body more this year.

So, I worked on ADR's for my August trip. My husband had to go to a church event tonight and (mercifully) my son is sleeping--he has been a challenge this week!! I am enjoying the quiet.

Run Wild Half Marathon Race Report

The weather forecast for Sunday was up and down all week and although I wasn't ever worried about the weather, I was not prepared for a warm (60 degrees) and muggy, humid morning...but you take what you get in weather. Since my last 3 races all started in the 20s and 30s (2 with rain!), I wasn't about to complain about the weather.

The course is one I have run twice before, and if I remember correctly I set a new PR each time. The course is run on roads starting on the west side of downtown Houston with an out and back 3 loop course. The course also ends up having a fair number of small hills as you go down 12 underpasses and back up again not counting a couple small inclines on the roadways.

I went out faster than normal and made myself hold back a bit, for which I would be grateful later. I had two main problems during the race, starting near mile 4 my right thigh felt as if it were on the verge of cramping up when I ran fast enough and my stomach started felling unsettled around mile 6. I fought off the cramping by following my training and trying to run a consistent pace that my leg would tolerate (miles 2 - 13 each fell within a 50 second pace range range as I ran a consistent 9/1 run/walk) and I fought off the stomach issues by drinking more water and less Gatorade than normal.

In the end the consistent pacing worked well for me, and I was able to maintain the pace even though I was tiring over the last few miles. For the last 2 years I have been trying to get under 2:30 in the half marathon and never quite getting there having a PR of 2:31:24, but today's run finally yielded a different result as I finished in 2:26:45, getting a roar of approval as I jumped across the finish line wearing (of course) the infamous jungle fever/leopard shorts.

Welcome back Kerry!

Christine...gotta love a sport that includes buying new shoes!

Richard...congrats on the PR! Glad to hear leopard makes you faster!

Corinna...I can promise you no snow wars when you come for Princess.

12 miles yesterday, XT today by driving DD17 75 miles to look at prom dresses because nothing could be found locally.

Just wanted to make sure I'm not behind...Ohana meet on Sat Princess weekend at Poly food court at 11:30 am?

Richard - congrats on your PR!

Kerry - welcome back! I'm new since you were here last. Where is the Army 10-miler?

As for me: I'm still at my folks this morning - flying out this afternoon. Just doing a quick check in. Got in some XT of sledding on Saturday  and did get in my 45 min moderate run/walk on Sunday OUTSIDE! :thumbsup2 The beginning 15 minutes or so was rough - really windy and just felt like I'd rather be back inside. Then things improved and I felt okay the rest of the run. Oh and I mentioned to my dad that I was having trouble finding a case (to wear running) that I liked for my iPod Touch. And he gave me an ipod Shuffle! :woohoo: He had 2 lying around that he doesn't use. He is always getting cool stuff at the corporate meetings and events he goes to. So I'll be playing with that when I get home tonight.

Lunch at my sister's restaurant was great. If you're looking for a nice place in NYC, it's the Gramercy Tavern. The Tavern part is great for a nice lunch or a "fancy casual" dinner. The dining room is amazing for a really nice dinner. My sister loves showing DD off, so we went on a tour of the kitchen (again). After lunch, my sister came back to pick up DD and take her to make her dessert in the kitchen! My sister had a counter set up like a cooking show with a bunch of little dishes of toppings. DD got to pick out 3 ice cream flavors from the freezer. Then decorate her sundae with pink sprinkles, chocolate crunchies, candies, etc. It was so cool!

Richard, congrats on the new PR! That's quite impressive given all those laps and inclines on Allen Pkwy. :cool1:

Just checking in before I get back to my BL coaching duties...I did my incline walking yesterday, and 4M on the TM this AM. I'm slowly getting faster. I ran at 11:32 today and Saturday, and I just feel like I'm really moving faster. I think I'd better get used to this speed before I try to get faster again. I know I sound quite slow to you all, but I started at barely being able to do 16 min miles, so I have come a long way.

Nicole -- You will love the shuffle! I consider mine essential :music:

Kerry -- How wonderful you are back with us! Your recovery food sounds yummy to me. popcorn::

Mel -- 75 miles to look at prom dresses?! I am so glad I have a ds! :rolleyes1 Seriously, I hope you guys have fun!

Richard -- Congratulations on your fabulous new PR! I know you worked hard for it, and you did it! :woohoo:

Christine -- Not that I get the chance often, but I think a nap is a precious treat to be savored. Nothing seems more decadent than laying down during the day in a nice sunny room and drifting off, cat snugly at my side and purring his little heart out. I'm glad you were able to take one, and I hope it helps! :cloud9:

JenB -- I predict your Victory Lap will be a source of great happiness...

Corinna -- I'm going back to the BL thread later this afternoon after I do a conference call. I do enjoy coaching...;)

Allie -- I hope things are going better in your neck of the woods.

Debra and other Sci Fi lovers -- I am very curious about your thoughts on Caprica. Is it just me, or does it move like molasses? And I get the scenes here and there for shock value (how many people can fit in that bed, anyway?!), but it just seems so dark and with very little comic relief. I get it's not supposed to be funny, but the light moments are few and far between, and the heavy ones are...is it just me, or do the Taurons remind you of the Sopranos? Yusef's MIL seems just like Tony's mother.

Oh, in an aside -- I just discovered I am not fond of Greek yogurt -- but I still want to hear all about the Big, Fat Greek Wedding, Ms. Jeanne!

Maria :upsidedow

Happy Monday!

Maria That sounds plenty fast to me!! And yes, I enjoyed my nap.

Nicole That sounds like a great treat for your daughter to make her own Sunday...I hope she had enough to share. Sounds like she will have a great week. Hope you have some fun adult activities scheduled while she is away.

Mel That does seem to be a bit of a drive for a Prom dress!! Hope she found a nice one and the two of you had some quality time together. I have a 17 yo son--he's easy. Loves to wear a suit and they are easy to come by.

PS I LOVE Greek style yogurt. At $8 a tub for my smoothies (lasts about a week) it is an expensive habit of mine.

I make my own yogurt (and can share how easy it is later when not at work), but just wanted say real quick...you can make Greek yogurt by draining regular yogurt through a couple coffee filters. Cheap and easy!

Mel - I'll look forward to seeing that yogurt recipe. I often eat it for breakfast and wouldn't mind saving some $ and putting my own touches on it as well. Good luck on the prom shopping!! I remember the "fun" my wife had with those adventures.

Maria - I'm just not getting into Caprica and don't plan to continue watching it. I agree with the Sopranos-esque description of the Taurons shown.

Back to work for me, it's my monthly late-night meeting and I'll likely be here until around 9 tonight. More fun tomorrow as I head off to an 8 AM dental appt for a crown. It's just fun, fun, fun all week....

Hi Christine - thanks for the welcome! Welcome to you too. Enjoy your new shoes. There is really nothing better than a new and well-fitting pair of running shoes. I could use a new pair myself. I love that you found a pair in pink. Hopefully you stay healthy and ward off whatever was making you feel bad. Something has been going around, even all the way over here in Europe. All of last week my husband and I felt terrible.

Richard - thanks again for the warm welcome back. I posted the answers to the questions. Congrats on your PR.

Mel - thank you for the welcome back.

Nicole - The Army 10-miler is in Washington DC in October. I've done it once and definitely want to do it again. It's a very inspiring race, especially now that we have so many war veterans in our military. I had tears in my eyes on that course. The course is scenic and nice and steady (not too hilly, not too flat). We are an Army family, so it's a great race for me to take part in. I highly recommend it, but be warned - it sells out VERY quickly. I think last year they had 24,000 slots and the race sold out in 6 days.

Hi Maria! I remember you from when I was here a year ago. Nice to "see" you again.

Christine/Mel - Mmmmm, I love greek style yogurt with granola. I've never made it myself though. Yum!

As for me today, I started DAY ONE of my newly mapped out course to the big Mickey in January. My training had been off-again, on-again this winter and I really lost control of everything. I am the kind of person that MUST have a road map to make this work, so a few days ago I sat down and worked out a 46 week plan - the number of weeks between now and the marathon. So today is day 1 of week 1 out of 46 weeks until the WDW Marathon. Today's plan was X-training. I went to spin class and then came home and started the Jillian Michaels 30-day shred. Ouch! Getting back on board here at theDis WISH forums and with Team O'Hana was part of my plan to stay accountable. Here's hoping that works! I love the support here.
