Team 'Ohana 2009: No One Left Behind

Richard, I think we should start planning a C2C contingency now. That bling looks nice! And DL is my favorite place in the world (sorry WDW).

I would love to see Ohana have a big C2C presence out there, although I can't commit to DL next year I would love to be able to do it then. We'll have to see about that. BTW, I hope you are feeling better and I think you'd make a wonderful Disney Mom--then we'd all be calling you Mom! :rotfl:

As for me, I am plugging away with my half-iron training for the Oct 25 Half-Ironman in Austin. As part of my bike training I have made a late decision to do the Tour de Cure Bike Ride in support of the fight against diabetes. I'll be doing the 62 mile ride option, which will be my longest ride to date--and 6 miles longer than the Half-Iron course! Of course, leave it to me to do a charity event with no time to raise the required minimum $ except from my own pocket, but hey it is for charity so it's all for the greater good. :)

Today, I had planned an 8 mile run, however my running partners decided to do 11-12 and dragged me along (OK, I could have taken a shortcut back), so I ran 11 and did a 1 mile cooldown. Around the halfway point it started raining, and kept raining for the next 3 miles or so. Fortunately, we did not get that really bad hot/humid thing going after the rain stopped!

Anyway, everyone have a great week out there!

Hi Cousins!

Just popping in for a very quick, "Hello!"

Diet and exercise were not my friends this weekend. I was doing great, and then I wasn't. I'll be starting fresh tomorrow.

Just found out we won't be able to do any of the races we had planned in Sept. -- kind of bummed, but not surprised. Dennis had an MRI on his knee at 7:30 this morning, his doctor thinks he has a torn meniscus(sp?). If so, he'll have to have surgery, but I gather it's out-patient and not serious, with a short recovery period. We should know the middle of this week if that's the case.

Loving all the photos and posts and hoping to see this thread really move this week -- I should have more time to post since an emergency project is over. The "emergency" is a request for funding for a new boiler system for one of our emergency shelters. Emergency is because I didn't find out until 5 days before it was due I had to do it, even though I asked a month ago...sometimes the glamour gets to me. What could be more scintillating than green boilers?

For those of you that suffered through August with me, one of the applications I had to kill myself to get out was just funded -- that's 105 homeless people that will be able to move into permanent housing with the supportive services they need (we're talking serious mental illness, so there are very real needs). I felt good about that.

It seems like lately when I post, on whatever thread, people don't reply. I'm not sure why that is, but it does seem bizarre?

Maria :upsidedow

Debra - I agree, the Women of Ohana were definitely a comely presence at the Disneyland Half!

Richard - I am thinking I am IN for next year's DL half (though not officially) as it is a 5 year medal next year - oooh, special! Also, I am glad you posted here - facebook has been leaving me in the dust, but I'll sponsor you for your bike ride. I'm as anti-diabetes as the next person, maybe moreso!

JenB - are you on facebook? Jeff posted a video that you are briefly visible in and I'd love to tag you in the photos I have on there, but well, we're not FB friends.

Maria - I am posting this for you. You did not kill the thread!

I am now going to head to the treadmill for a lovely 8 miler. It's been a full day and is a little warmish out even at 7pm. So the treadmill it is. Better than nothing. 10 miler coming up in just a couple of weeks, so I need to stay, you know, vigilant. This is me as a vigilant bride: :bride: Not how I am keeping my eyes firmly fixed on the prize du jour.

Anyone read "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society"???

Corrina - Hopefully I will get to see you at DL next Labor Day weekend. I would be honored if you would sponsor me. While I do not have diabetes, my late mother in law suffered from it, as well as two of my employees currently. Here is my online link for support: http://main.diabetes.org/site/TR?pg=personal&fr_id=6010&px=5259797 I was not originally going to post it here, but thanks for offering.

Corinna: No, I'm not of facebook although I'm getting more tempted to join. It just seems like another thing I don't really have time for... Did you see the ASI photo of us in the stadium? It was one of the only pictures of me I liked-- your number was tough to see so the pic might not have been linked to you. I'm not sure it is really me in the video although I can pretend it was :confused3

Maria: You are in now way a thread killer, keep posting.

I've had a rough week with random stress so am trying to turn over a new leaf for Monday. We are running in the Philia Distance Run (a half marathon) this coming Sunday so there is a race to look forward to. I scrapped my LR last night in favor of an easy 6 miles due to fatigue but will try for maybe 8 miles tomorrow as a compromise. Off to the elliptical tonight for a little cross training then early to bed. On the positive side for this week I did manage to lose some weight which brings my total to 9 pounds--- slow but at least in the right direction :thumbsup2

Aww, thanks guys!

I just watched the new Scooby Doo movie with ds -- some things have changed in Coolsville since we last visited. Fred has dark hair and Velma is now Asian...but I still figured out who the villian was and why!

It's a small thrill, but at least my deductive reasoning still works. Oh, and the ghosts -- real this time.

It's just about time to tuck myself in for the evening -- I'll be back tomorrow to see how the plans for next year's DL are coming -- sounds like there will be a lovely crew with at least one handsome fella!

Hello Cousins!

Congrats to all who did the DL Half! :cool1: It sounds like it was a lot of fun.

Maria - Sorry to hear about having to skip any races for Sept. I hope Dennis' knee heals quickly. Congrats on getting your application funded. You should definitely feel good about that. :thumbsup2 As for the scintillating green boilers, well, I'll say that your life is much more exciting than mine. My boiler is blue.

Debra - I hope your cold is gone soon. I'm glad you applied for the Mom's Panel. As I said on FB, I have a few kids you could borrow, especially my chatty 3rd grader!

Richard - I'm impressed that your 8 miles turned into 12 miles. :worship: I'm not sure I could do that. Once I have a distance in my head, that's all I want to do. Adding an extra 4 miles to my run probably won't ever happen.

We're slowly getting back into our routine around here. The first few weeks of school and activites is always chaotic, but things are now falling into place nicely. I just finished my first official week of marathon training. Yesterday, I ran 8 miles in the pouring rain, and I got my first ever blister. My socks were just so wet, my poor foot didn't stand a chance.

Well, now I feel a little silly...no wonder you all think I'm nuts! When I said green boilers I didn't mean the color, I meant they are very energy-efficient. The current ones are about 20 years old. Replacing them will save about $21,000/year, so it's a good idea...see, I already feel better about that project!

Julie -- So brave of you to run in the rain! Take good care of that blister...we don't want you on the injured reserve list!

You all amaze me with how you just keep going. No matter the conditions, you go out and do your workouts. I need to get into that mindset!

I'm off to get us moving toward work and school. I didn't do my run this morning, but I am committed to either running or walking the distance after work, then running tomorrow am, and weights during BL. Then I will be caught up on the workout I missed yesterday.

Everyone have an awesome day!
Maria :upsidedow

Richard - My grandmother, father and father-in-law have diabetes. Thankfully they have all been able to successfully manage the disease. It is my honor to do the sponsoring - that sounds like a very long bike ride to me!

JenB - I did not see the one of us in the stadium - you're right, I'm sure that my number wasn't showing enough. Stupid shorts-pinning! It works better when I'm wearing a running skirt. Thank goodness I was with a friend! What was your bib #?

Julie - that reminds me of my downpour run this summer. I hope your blister heals quickly - nothing worse than wet socks.

Maria - Congratulations on getting that grant through. I bet that feels fantastic! I am so looking forward to the new season of BL tomorrow, even if their rapid loss makes me feel a bit like a :snail:.

I ran 8 brutal miles on the treadmill last night. I remember running on the TM at The Disneyland Hotel and I didn't complain at all about that, did I? I think my treadmill is wicked and a liar. I did do a "hill" course last night, which didn't help. Oh well, at least it is done. More miles tomorrow, but I'm going to try to get outside for them. I am also taking a painting class tomorrow morning, so between that and the drop off, it's going to be TIGHT.

If anyone's interested, I've got a WW online blog now. It's, well, it's not the best one out there and I'm a bit of an iconoclast (today's rant was about the phrase "Relationship With Food"), but it's mine:

http://community.weightwatchers.com/Blogs/UserBlog.aspx?blogid=1002335

Corinna - Now you should know that the reason for the differences in the 2 treadmill runs is that everything is better at Disneyland. ;) Good job on the Relationship with Food post!

Corinna: My bib # is 4698-- but you must ignore all of the other bad photos if you look at it:laughing:

We are likely in for next year's DL race again-- who can pass up a 5 year special medal:woohoo:

Julie - that really IS a great picture of us! Most of mine were terrible as well. I looked like a dork for 13 miles, but that .1 in the stadium, not too bad! :-) Also, congratulations on your weight loss! Slow but steady wins the race, they say. Of course, they aren't talking about road races, I don't think, cause slow and steady tends to put me somewhere between the middle to back of the pack, pretty much.

Richard - I think you are right about that! Everything but the Rainforest Cafe - I am still not a fan. And possibly not the Jungle Cruise, either - there is no tiger tunnel in the Disneyland Jungle Cruise!

Richard - I think you are right about that! Everything but the Rainforest Cafe - I am still not a fan. And possibly not the Jungle Cruise, either - there is no tiger tunnel in the Disneyland Jungle Cruise!

Corinna - I guess I'll just have to see those for myself next year! And it'll probably have to be next year as I am pencilling in Marine Corps Marathon for 2011 fall destination trip.

Calling all cousins, calling all cousins....

I've been a bad captain with the numbers and being restricted with the online time, but if you have yet to give me your August numbers I'll do my best to get them up by Friday.

Richard: Have I told you I'm so impressed with all the training and events you've been doing. Your Tour de Cure Bike Ride charity event sounds like such fun, and a worth cause indeed! And good training of course, being just a happy by-product. :thumbsup2 Great job working with your running partner, too. Thanks for the sponsorship link, too.

So, does this mean you're a go for the DL 1/2 in 2010 and MCM in 2011? I got confused by the numbers....so easy to do to me.

Maria: I'm so sorry to hear about Dennis' knee--what's the verdict. Bummer on the September events, too. I'm super impressed with how you always manage to hold things together with your various last-minute projects (btw, I understood what you meant by green boilers). And congrats on your grant getting funded--the work you do is SO important! Oh, and about Scooby-Do. Velma is Asian? Really? :confused3

Oh, and I love your determination to stick to a schedule and to workouts, even if that means doubling up on things. I think doing weights during BL is bound to keep you focused--the show can be so inspiring.

Corinna: 5 year medal next year for the DL 1/2? Oooh, I love anniversary medals. (Although I'm looking for a charity to give them away to--there's one out there for racing medals, I know.) I do think the TMs in DL are sprinkled with pixie dust.

Vigilant is such a good description for you, although I still say it takes 2nd place to hard-core. You've really worked it in so many ways this year than I'll see nothing but your dust this January! I can't promise to regularly read your WW online blog, but I love that you have one. :goodvibes

JenB: Sorry to hear about your stress level--and I think it's worse when it's random, for some reason. (Less control, perhaps?) But good news abounds! Great DL 1/2, WTG on your weight loss, and you've got a fun race to look forward to! :cool1: Oh, btw, good luck with the Philadelphia Distance Run this weekend!

Julie: Great news on finishing your first week of marathon training! :yay: And double-yay for toughing it out with a blister. I know how hard it can be, as I get blisters after every LR. That and the rain only makes it harder. (Btw, did you do the Honan 5k?) And thanks for the well wishes on the Disney Moms panel--not a chance for me, really, but I did enjoy applying!

As for me: Continued limited internet access. DOOD has volunteered to take care of the problem and one of the things we've learned in our relationship is not to take over when one of us says we'll do something. Even if that something is taking much longer than it should. :rolleyes1 And not to nag. Or ask too many questions. Not worth the fall-out. :rotfl2:

In other bad news. I've substituted XT for both my midweek runs, as my left leg has moved from tender to discomfort to pain--luckily, not when running, but after--in that outside ankle to calf region. So I'm taking a couple of days off. That, plus this week is a cut-back week (3/6 miles) so I'm hoping things will be fine. DOOD has the same problem, same leg, and we're running the same route, so I'm thinking there's a connection. DOOD has his first ultra (50K) this weekend in Youngstown, OH, so he's in taper and hoping it doesn't affect his performance. Then again, he's running with his much slower partner, so that will help (I hope).

In the bad news/good news department: We've decided to defer on Baltimore, due to conflicts in a tight schedule more than anything else. The good news is, we know this means we can at least come down for race weekend. Not sure if it'll be a POP century, weekend-only visit, but we're planning on being there! :cool1:

So, does this mean you're a go for the DL 1/2 in 2010 and MCM in 2011? I got confused by the numbers....so easy to do to me.

Debra - You embarrass me with all the kind words and flattery, which will get you anywhere in my book. As for DL 2010 and MCM 2011, let's not yet say it's a go, but a definite planned goal. I can't really bring up DL 2010 with DW until after the January trip now, can I?

Debra: if you are serious about a charity for race medals, here is a link to one that I think seems really nice: http://www.medals4mettle.org/ they take only medals earned during a race (will not accept "unearned" extras) and donate to them to people fighting their own battles against cancer-- as in "someone trained really hard to earn this and that person thinks you deserve it more for the tough battle you are fighting" kids particularly like the Disney ones

Aloha, Cousins!

How's it goin'? I'm having a great day -- up a little late, but still got my TM run in this AM. I seem to be doing really well with the organic food. I like it! I don't miss all the sugar substitutes in my yogurt, and the produce literally does taste better.

Unfortunately, Dennis does indeed have a torn meniscus. He's supposed to see a surgeon Oct. 2, and then they'll schedule his surgery. He's very hopeful he will have it soon so it doesn't interfere with training. He has such a good base, I think he could easily miss a few weeks and still have a fantastic time.

I should have said Velma was Asian-American, she presented as a typical American teen Velma version. I was also trying to figure out who the intended audience was -- the commercials were Fisher Price and Barbie, and the show content had mild sexual situations (Daphne grabs Fred and kisses him, etc.), and was followed by Total Drama Action, which is definitely aimed at Tweens. It was an odd combination.

Ok, who's excited about the changes coming to WDW's FantasyLand?! I am such a kid, but I can't wait to eat in Belle's restaurant! I'm going to "Be Their Guest"! And I'll meet you guys for a ride with Ariel! Under the Sea! :yay:

JenB -- What a great organization, that's good work! :goodvibes

Richard -- Is everyone going to DL 2010, I can't be the only one left out... Hmm....

Debra -- Note to self, it's hard to hold the weights if your crying while you watch BL. Wow, the first show was a tear jerker -- and a wake-up call. It is very motivating! :thumbsup2 I'm sorry you won't be able to do Baltimore, but so very happy you'll be at WDW!

Corinna -- I know your blog is helping you and tons of others, too! What a great thing to do! I'm going to be excited to sport your latest creation, the BL Fall Challenge clippie! You're a talented Cousin! :cutie:

Julie -- Did you find a sitter for the Honan? I'm sorry we're going to miss you, but I'm sure if you go you'll have a great time! :cool1:

Ok, back to work. I'm going to eat my lunch early today since I have a 12:00 meeting...much better than being hungry! Oh, and the office is providing lunch, but I said, "No Thank You", so I could stick to the food I brought. I know that's not a big thing, but it was for me! ;)

Maria :upsidedow

Richard: Ahhhh, you're a wise man, to wait until after January to make more Disney race plans. Like a panther you are, stalking the opportunity and waiting to pounce at the right moment. Me, I just make a blanket announcement to DOOD that I want to do all Disney races and keep reminding him until he gives in on one. It's a lot of work, and I've got no pride. But hey, whatever it takes, right? :lmao:

JenB: YES! That's the one I was thinking of! :cool1: Thank you, thank you, thank you. As a cancer survivor myself, this charity really appeals to me. And I should have known you'd be hooked into ones that would send medals to kids. You're right--who better to receive them?(Don't get me wrong, folks, I like getting the bling. I just don't like the clutter in my house.)

Maria: SO sorry to hear about Dennis' torn meniscus and upcoming surgery. I didn't realize one could recover from that so relatively quickly. And I do think he has a strong base, so I'm sure that's a factor. As for the Scooby Doo movie, I wouldn't have thought they'd try to go with such a wide demographic? I wonder if TPTB were thinking of the nostalgia factor?

WTG with the early lunch--much, much better to go into a meeting on full stomach, assuming such meetings don't upset your tummy. Hopefully, food coma hits and any annoying things pass right over your head. :rotfl2:

As for me: If you're on Facebook and friends with me, you know I've highly recommended Zombieland. If you're not, you know now!

Debra...if you need help posting numbers, just let me know

Richard...diabetes is what brought me to running and ultimately led to finding the WISH team. My great-grandmother, grandfather, mother were affected. My blood sugar was creeping up which led me to the whole weight loss/running/racing thing. Thanks for what you're doing for the cure.

Anyone have recipe suggestions to get a family of confirmed non-vegetable eaters to eat the darn things?

I'm doing okay with Goofy training. The b2b aren't too bad so far. My ankle is holding up well, but starting 9 miles tomorrow. Generally, 8 and above is when I start feeling it, so I'm encouraged that the 8s I've done so far have been pretty benign.

Can y'all believe it's Sept already?

Mel - Not only is it September, it's more than halfway over! Time is flying!

Richard - I'm with Debra. Fortunately, DH agrees with me and my Disney obsession, so if I were to announce now that we were doing DL next year, he'd just nod and say ok. He just shows up at the airport or in the car at the designated time and lets me make all the travel arrangements.

Maria - PD for Dennis's knee and hopes for a speedy recovery. I think we need to plan a trip to DL to join the rest of the cousins next August! DH has never been, and I keep telling him he needs to go...

Julie - Two words. Body Glide. Regardless of the forecast, my feet are absolutely smothered in it.

Debra - Hope the leg recovers quickly (DOOD's too!) Sorry about Baltimore - that one keeps coming up on my "I'd like to do someday" list, but so far I haven't been able to work it in. 2010? 2011? Bill and I really liked the city when we were there. Good luck to DOOD on his ultra. My brother did those for a while, but it was before I started running. Now that I'm running, I find it even more amazing!

As for me - I managed to skip all my workouts this week. Somehow DH and I just couldn't connect on our schedules, and we didn't bother to run solo. We're doing 10 miles tomorrow with the group - all hills. I'm really excited about this run - it's the first time in 3 years that I've made it to this point in the season without injury and been able to run in this particular location. On the home front, DD's boyfriend's grandfather finally died Monday morning, so we went to the funeral Wednesday (mainly because DD said she wanted us there "for her.") She had just a couple of minutes to talk to us after the service to tell us she was spending the night at his house - so much for our plans to spend the afternoon with her! We had a really ugly conversation the next day that ended in her hanging up on me after telling me if she had to choose between his family and ours then she'd choose his, and we haven't spoken since. Add to that a feud with our neighbors over who's responsible for the copperhead that bit his dog. It's been a great week! There's no telling how long I may be capable of running tomorrow - maybe I should join DOOD in his ultra...

Jackie
