Team 'Ohana 2009: No One Left Behind

Just poking in to see how things are going with the Cousins, hope all is well and everyone is healthy....... :woohoo:

Been slow here, eh? Good thing, as I've been pressed for time... Hopefully I've got things under control now. (Hmmm, seems like I've been saying this since September. :goodvibes)

October 1! It's time for September numbers, cousins! :rotfl2:

Jackie: I'm so impressed with all your training. I love that you and your DH have been able to train together, and you're getting so speedy! :car: And the fact you can do 10 miles of hill work, followed by speedwork speaks volumes about how you've progressed this year. Oh, and I totally understand your 2010 goal. Same way with me--I love my walk breaks on the long distance, but fear I've become overly attached to them on short runs.

Maria:
The SIL I like...
:rotfl2: Is she going to hang with us WISHers? On the course? (I bet you leave her in the dust.) Or at the POP meet, other meets, afterwards? Okay, so what I'm really asking is, are you making time for US? ;)

Robert: Been meaning to say I love the kilt.

Jeanne: I'm glad to hear your DL 1/2 and training has been going well in spite of everything. How cool about NYC--the private dinner and 5K sound like a lot of fun. And remember, you will have the time of your life in NYC in just a couple of weeks. We need the bib number to cheer you on! :cool1:

Wedding news....Wasted? You? Nawww, you'll just be glowing with pride and joy at your DD's wedding. And what better way to celebrate the union of your DD and the Greek than with a few toasts of tasty beverages? (Yeah, take pictures early. With such a large wedding party, you're going to need a few drinks. :rotfl2:)

Richard: I know what you mean about the deals coming out a little late. It worked for me and DOOD, luckily, because it came at the right time of our reservation-making anxieties. (And your OKW sounds like a lovely retreat.) Oh,oh, oh! Congratulations on your weight-loss numbers. We're so very proud of you! :yay: (P.S. You're an athlete through and through and I wouldn't listen to that inaccurate for athletes BMI chart anyway.)

Corinna: Yay for all your continued successes! Just saw your numbers for September. Tuckered me plump out.

Jen: Pregnancy Update? With pictures, please!

Julie: Only three days at OKW? Awww, can't we convince you to stay a little longer?

Jack: I miss you! We cousins need to sponsor a social hour, don't you think? :woohoo:

As for me: Booked at POR for 1/6 - 1/13. Did my b2b runs this weekend of 7/14, then had shin splints on Monday. Added a new PT freelance gig--thanks Mel--that might keep me busy, depending on how ambitious I am.

I need dining recommendations for marathon weekend. Anyone have any favorites? We're thinking about Boma on Friday night, although I'm worried it will interfere with the POP meet. We're kind of open on things, because this year DOOD's parents aren't coming (although he hasn't told them this yet--coward. :lmao:)

Oh, I almost forgot. Below is a picture of DOOD from his 50K Ultra. And the other pic is of Josh Gad, who's co-starring in Love and Other Drugs, the film that started filming in Pittsburgh last week.

Hi Cousins!

Today was the Twin Cities 10 Mile, which is the last 10 miles of the Twin Cities Marathon. It's also called "The Shortcut to the Capitol." The weather was the best they've had for this event in years, apparently - low 40's, mostly cloudy, slight breeze that was only really cold on top of the bridge and the last big hill. It was a challenge to decide what to wear - I ultimately opted for tights with a running skirt over the top (first time I've worn tights since last winter!), a sleeveless shirt with a running jacket over the top and gloves. There were a few times I wished I was wearing shorts, and a few times I was glad I was wearing tights, and several times that I took the jacket off and wore it around my waist and almost as many that I put it on again. I think I got it about right for me, but maybe shorts and a long sleeve would have been better. :confused3

It was incredible, actually - the way it worked was I parked in St. Paul and they were running busses from two hotels over to Minneapolis. My friend/acquaintance who is coming along to Disney for the half marathon in January, Lysa, was also doing this event with her running partners and another friend, but she and I had not planned to meet up. However, as I was stretching a little in the hotel lobby, there was Lysa! Crazy that we'd park at the same hotel at the same time, but it was great. I met her friends, one of whom I knew slightly from college, and another of whom was in corral 4 with me - Lysa and her partners are faster and were in corral 3. I rode the bus with them and was glad to have someone to walk me through the metrodome pre-race hoopla. We finally headed out to the corrals and Kirsten and I decided to head to our corral (it was 5 minutes to the start time!!) while the others waited in a line - you know what kind. Apparently they eventually gave up on it and joined their corral before the start.

Kirsten and I discussed pace and splitting up when the time seemed right, but it was her first 10 mile, she was running at a pace that was comfortable for me and it's truly kind of nice to have someone to run with and share the sights of the course with. Including a woman who ran off into the woods and must have thought she was more concealed than she actually was! :rolleyes1 So I stuck with Kirsten, even though I could have pushed the envelope a little more on my own. I was nervous to push it, though because I had heard there were a lot of hills on this course. Well, there were, but really, the hills where I run every day are a lot crazier than the hills in St. Paul. That's how it seemed anyhow. Also, I wanted to save something for the RFTT next weekend - I knew if I pushed it, I'd need a lot more recovery this week.

We stuck together until the last 1/2 mile - when we saw the capitol, we started our kick - it turned out I had a little more than Kirsten who had been pushing it all morning, I think, but then - ambulance. Can you believe I actually stopped in the last stretch because an ambulance wanted to cross the race course? "Don't get hit by an ambulance." That is my new motto. Although, if you're going to get hit, an ambulance is not a bad choice, as it carries immediate assistance.

I finished strong, happy and under two hours, which was what I had wanted. I have felt a little badly the rest of the day about how good I actually feel - because I didn't really race this one hard, my body has felt like I woke up early but I haven't asked anything unusual of it.

Kirsten was thrilled with her time. She had been hoping to come in under two hours, but had not anticipated coming in nearly 10 minutes under! For me, it was not a 10 mile PR (this summer I ran one in, I think 1:45, but it was flat and I was wiped out after) but sometimes it is OK not to actually strive for a PR, right?

I can definitely see why this is known as America's Most Beautiful Urban Marathon - I only ran the last 10 miles, but they were lovely. Beautiful trees, the river, the grand old homes of St. Paul, finishing at the capital. A lovely course, and one I hope to run again sometime.

Debra, I hear ya on those September miles/minutes - I made the mistake of making up a stopgap training program for this 10 mile based on the mileage I was training with at the END of the DL Half program. I ended up kind of exhausted and am threw in some extra rest at the end of the 10 mile plan just so I get to the start line feeling good. I knew I had the distance, but I needed to make sure I'd have the energy!

Also, CASH is not an actual theater professional, though he wanted to be and wants to be. He is truly good enough, but is stockier and doesn't have those leading man looks, so it was rough in his 20's to get cast since the character roles tended to go to the more seasoned, mature actors. Now that he's older, it seems like he might have a better chance. This group we work with has aspirations of becoming semi-professional, but so far is all volunteer.

Hello Cousins,

Just time for a quick hello. I promise to catch up with everyone later in the week.

Maria - We did not do the Honan race. As Marcia Brady would say, "Something suddenly came up." I hope that we can both do it next year. It would be great to meet up there. How is Dennis' knee?

Corinna - Great race report. Thanks for sharing! It sounds like a beautifully scenic run. Love the new motto. Mind if I borrow it sometime?

Debra - Yes, only 3 days at OKW for our Jan trip. Although I'd love to stay longer and get to know my cousins ever better, we're leaving the kids at home and that's long enough for me to be away (and I'm sure my parents - the babysitters - would agree ;)).

Rob & I ran 11 miles in the pouring rain yesterday. Thank goodness it wasn't cold. I realized that it's not the rain that I mind, it's the puddles. I'm not the most coordinated person in the world, so I can only imagine how I must have looked as I was trying to weave in and out and also jump over the puddles on the sidewalk. I'm sure it was a sight. :rotfl2:

I'm off to get the kids' uniforms ready for tomorrow. I'll be back soon.

Hi Team!

After talking over some of our January trip details with my DW, we decided to upgrade the 2 nights at POP to POR as we have always like the moderate level resort and have never stayed at POR. We'll still be at OKW for the first 7 nights. This will easily be our longest trip to WDW, our previous longest is 6 nights.

I have now bought our air tickets with a recent drop in prices again, maybe they'll still come down but I always seem to lose playing that game so I bought at a price lower than I was willing to pay previously. Now I have air tickets, hotel rooms and park tickets paid for, plus most of the spending money set aside. This should be like our first trip when we had everything set aside ahead of time and had extra money at the end of the trip (in spite of our attempts to spend it on souvineers for everyone) and not like the last one where the credit card was needed before trip's end. I believe I have crossed the point of no return regarding setting up this trip.

I am entering the busy part of my running season for the year, with 6 events in 13 weeks beginning this weekend. :scared1: Then again, I (quite literally) signed up for it. My biggest worry is injury, which could force me to miss multiple events. Fortunately, I have been generally injury free for a while; unfortunately, I am nursing a sore muscle in my right thigh from this last weekend which felt sore Monday morning for no apparent reason, which means I'll do an easy week leading into this weekend's 10 miler and hope it heals up...especially since I am less than 3 weeks from my main race event of 2009 on October 25. I am looking forward to getting some decently cool weather soon. It has cooled off but it is still (81º at 915 this morning as I write this).

Corinna - Good report, maybe your next tag should read "will stop for ambulances"!

Julie - I think you can be excused for the short 3 day trip away from the little ones, plus that's 3 days more than I was there last year.

Debra - I enjoyed reading the 50K report, made me remember the monstrosity that was my first (and still only) 50K event. WHen I posted my Spetember numbers to the spreadsheet I noticed my big increase pover the last 2 months as part of my Half-Ironman preparation. I have discovered that I really enjoy the time I spend trining on my bike, especially my new (as my wife referes to it) "fancy, schmancy" bike.

Jeanne - With my own daughters being 19 and 21, your wedding updates always catch my attention, although my DW is already plotting to give my girls a check and point them to Vegas when the time comes!

Jeanne - I'm glad your health issue has been resolved and that you're back on track. How's the wedding planning going? I LOVED the comment your DD made to the photographer. Of course, I'm sure there's no truth to that whatsoever...:rolleyes1

Richard - I hope that you enjoy both of your resorts for the marathon trip. We love POR. We used to stay there all the time before we drank the DVC koolaid. :rotfl:

Richard – congrats on the weight loss and also the paid for vacation! Two great victories.:thumbsup2

Julie – Wow! Great job running in the rain. :umbrella:I still haven’t been brave enough to try this – I always resort to the treadmill if it’s raining. I think that one of my biggest fears for the Jan. marathon is rain.

Jeanne – Your family sounds so fun!:dance3: I’m sure the wedding will be wonderful – can’t wait to see the pictures – it was so kind of your daughter to ask the photographer to get some great shots of you!

Corinna – :woohoo:great race report, great results, great job! I’m glad you were able to meet up with some friends before the start. I’ve never done a race alone – I’ve always had WISH buddies to pass the time with before the start of a race.

Debra – We’re still debating where we’ll dine at the World in Jan too. We love :love:Boma but won’t eat there the day before a race. We both suffer from Boma Belly :tilt:the day after we dine there. We’ll save Boma for a day after the race.

As for me... We're sort of getting back into a routine here. The girls activites keep us busy in the evenings. I've stuck to my Goofy training plan as much as possible this month. I'm doing a half marathon in Ohio on Sunday. As I read Corinna's race report it reminded me to check the weather for the race. It says it will be a low of 41 and a high of 51. A little chillier than we've been use to during our training. I think 55 is the perfect temperature for a race but this sounds a bit cooler. I need to rethink my clothing choices. I've only raced in warm weather - I'm not sure what I'll wear.

:goodvibesHave a great week cousins!

Hellooooo, October! Glad to see some cousins posting here. I'd love to hear a RR from Mel, who I know did fabulous on her duathlon! :thumbsup2

Corinna: Great RR for the 10 miler--I haven't done the Twin Cities marathon, as I wasn't a runner back then, but I have spectated on several parts of the course. It is very, very lovely (especially as I've never been treated to the sights of people using the woods in less-than-perfect cover )! And now that I'm running I hope to do the race sometime, especially as I much prefer cooler weather. Love the ambulance motto. It deserves a place on a running shirt! And I especially love how fast you're getting. All that training is paying off, and you'll be leaving me in the dust at the half. (That's okay, I'll be happy to eat your dust.)

Thanks for the update on CASH. I know you two are really involved in your theater scene, and figured it had to be an avocation at the very least. I'll cross my fingers that the group goes semi-professional, for both of you. I see marquee lights in your future!

Julie: Kudos to your for running 11 miles in the pouring rain. I'm sure the sight people saw was of dedicated athletes--the kind that make people who are not-so-subconsciously jealous shake their heads and say, "She must be crazy." Because, of course, they're jealous of your determination. No blisters from wet shoes, I hope? I'm disappointed by your quick trip to the World, for selfish reasons, but do hope you have another, more leisurely trip coming up? With the kiddos, naturally? Oh, and any tips on building requests for POR would be appreciated! :thumbsup2

Maria: Julie's post reminded me...how's the plans for Dennis' surgery progressing? Not to mention your own training, etc., but I thought I'd ask about him for a change.

Richard: Okay, so NOW you've made my day. You're going to be at POR! :cool1: It'll be our first stay there, too, which is one of the things that appealed to me. (That is, if was stay on-world; see my post below.) We haven't bought out airline tickets yet, but hope to do so soon. It's that balance between jumping on things too soon and getting slammed, or waiting too long and getting slammed. I'd be one dead amphibian in the Frogger universe.

I hadn't done the numbers with your events....6 events in 13 weeks??!! :scared1: I hope you're planning lots of easy-mileage days, just to avoid the risk of injury. Be particularly careful of that thigh right now because I know you have big plans for your race on the 25th. With all the XT you've been doing--on and off that fancy-schmancy bike, I have no doubts you'll do well if you can get to the start injury free. What kind of taper are you doing for that one?

Kathy: Good point about Boma belly. I may have to reconsider, quickly! (I can make ADRs tomorrow.) I like the range of veggie options, which means I can graze to my stomach's content. Unfortunately, at Boma my eyes are never bigger than my stomach. :cloud9: What's your October half? I like a nice 45ish degree day myself, as I'm a sweat-er (and not the nice cashmere kind, more the pilly, raggedy kind), so your forecast sounds good. Are you doing to do layers that you could toss? That's what I'd recommend if it's your first cooler-weather race.

As for me: Did my LRs this weekend--only 4 and 8.5 miles--before remembering we had a 5K fun run on Sunday. So woo hoo, we did our local ZooZilla 5K after my b2bs. I didn't PR, not even close. My legs weren't that tired--surprise, surprise!--but it was a very hilly course for a 5K as the zoo is nestled in the hills. What do you expect. It is Pittsburgh! (I'm curious as to what the elevation actually was--one day I'll remember to download the Garmin numbers into their program.) Anyway, we earned t-shirts and "free" admission into the zoo for the race, so I think it's a keeper of a local event! :yay:

In other news, I received an email from my MIL asking if we'd be willing to share a two-bedroom off-world rental for the January marathon week. Apparently, DOOD STILL hasn't gotten around to telling them that this isn't going to be an extended family trip. Harrummppph. Maybe she's soon to be my ex-MIL. :lmao: Nawww, they can come to Disney whenever they want; I'm just not hanging with them. :rolleyes1

Hey, Hey, Hey Debra! You just need to tell the family you are already staying with friends (i.e. me!) instead of rental house.;) I know what you mean by the airline tickets, I usually miss the low price boat. This time I saw prices jump and thought I missed it, then thry came down and I grabbed it at a price I was OK with.

Between events I'll mostly be doing easy mileage, and will continue the cross-training. I would like ot set a 10 mile PR this weekend, but it is no longer a priority, as my new priority goal is to stay healthy doing the 10 miler. The HIM goal is to finish, the SA half goal is to have a good time and honor Allison as her Dad and I both run it (albiet him much faster! he is fast enough to possibly challenge for an AG award!!). The Dec 6 half marathon goal is to PR and the Goofy goal is to get "Goofy" with y'all and to finish!!!!

Now what it this "taper" thing you speak of?
Seriously, the taper for the HIM started last weekend (other than this Saturday's 10 mile run) and involves 30 minute weekday limits and no more than half the race distance on long bikes and runs (ok, more like 60% distance), except for the swim where 30 minutes gets me 1500 out of the 2100 yards.

The thigh is feeling better each day, so the chances are looking good right now.

Hi Richard,

I did a tiny bit of research -- the recycling department at WDW is called "Environmental Initiatives". If she contacted that department, they might be able to tell her how much is produced, since they are tracking the percentage that is recycled...

Good Luck!
Maria :upsidedow

Richard: I just googled "Disney waste management" and a ton of articles came up. It should have the information you need.

Richard: I just googled "Disney waste management" and a ton of articles came up. It should have the information you need.

Maybe my problem was using Yahoo to search, lots of articles, but noone seemed to have the right details, and using the word trash just ended up with lots of stuff on Push the Talking Trash Can.... Thanks!

Hey Team!

I have an off topic question to help my daughter for a school project. My oldest daughter gave a presentation in speech class about hidden feature of Disneyworld (hidden Mickeys, utilidoor system, ...).The teacher asked her to followup with some information about the amount of trash generated by either the Magic Kingdom or all WDW parks each day.

I am surprised, but so far we have had difficulty finding out this information. Any ideas?

Oooh, semi-academic questions on Disney. Me, me! I can find out, me!

For quick informal answers--if that's what your DD's instructor wants--check out the following:

Stephen Fjellman's Vinyl Leaves (1992, but still the bible of academic tomes on WDW). Chapter 10 includes a brief section on "Waste Disposal" and says WDW is capable of handling up to 50 tons a day. The sources is available on Google Books, page 194. I have a copy of the book at home, so I can look it up if you'd like.

Another book, Married to the Mouse: Walt Disney World and Orlando, is by Richard Folglesong. I don't remember it dealing with any stats, specifically, just an overall look at WDW's impact on Orlando.

Also, here's a couple of quick links to related concerns that might help address the instructor's questions:

Vacation Days Magazine, in an article based on a behind-the-scenes tour, says 23 tons a day in the MK alone.

This article, from PhysOrg and dated earlier this year, gives the number for all the parks and resorts (worldwide, excluding Tokyo) at 298,000 tons for 2006. Those numbers are also reported by Ecoseed.

Your DD could also check out Disney's Environmentality materials and in particular its WDW's Environmental Overview, which talks about its recycling and conservation efforts. The PR talk cloaks the nasty numbers, but Disney provide some hint at scope.

Now...I really must get back to writing. Don't you just hate writer's block?

Oooh, semi-academic questions on Disney. Me, me! I can find out, me!

Um, Ok let's try the anxious young lady in the back with the sunglasses...

;)

Seriously, thanks for each of you Debra, Maria, Jeanne. You are each so sweet for helping out. I know many other would have chimed in given the chance.

Debra, I am glad to say I found one of those articles, not too bad for an old guy whose only presence on clooege campus for a long time is to drop off my daughter.

Good morning cousins and happy Friday.

Sorry I've been a bit MIA-- I've been lurking and trying to keep up, but time to post just hasn't been happening. Debra: I love your vast knowledge of Disney trivia, I also think the question itself was pretty cool.

It's good to hear things seem to be going well all around for team Ohana.

I've been doing well and plodding along with my Goofy training. I did an early long run last night to sneak it in before my weekend getaway for Race for the Taste. My planning could have been better because I did not start the run until 9:00pm and planned for 13 miles with a .5 mile walk to warm up and another .5 cool down. This is all well and good but at a 12 min per mile pace I was up until midnight running (on TM in the basement) then was too wired to sleep for another hour and a half. Let me just note the lack of quality tv on at midnight :happytv: I'm happy to say I got through the run ok, but I am tired today, there may be a nap in my future as I do laundry in prep for my trip.

Hey guys. Sorry to be MIA, just lots going on in the fall as usual.

Duathlon went well. It's a 2 mile run, then 13 mile bike, then 3.1 mile run. Worst part is the soft sand on the beach going up and back to the finish. It's really been hot lately, inappropriately for this time of year. I'm blaming that for my run times being slower than last year, even though I was better prepared. I did take quite a bit of time off the bike leg though, so my overall time was 10 min faster than last year. I still won the Athena division for 40+ because I was the only one to enter. That makes me Athena champion for 2 years in a row! I have a friend who won the 39 and under Athena group though that ages up next year. uh oh ;)

Here's pictures:
Siesta Key Duathlon Pictures

I've had some Goofy training crises. DD6 has soccer on Sat mornings now so I'm working my longest run around that. The 9:30 games will be tough. Really, really wondering why I registered for this :confused3

ooops...teenage crisis, needs band equipment, gotta run.

Mel, nice job taking 10 min off your time and winning the Athena 40+ division! :thumbsup2 Love the pictures. Running in that soft sand looks quite challenging.

Mel - Great job on the duathlon! Don't they know they need to schedule soccer games around your runs? DH is having the same problem. He coaches a U12 boys team, and his games have fortunately been 10:30 or later as our runs have gotten longer. There were a couple of really close calls though, particularly the one where the game balls were in my car when I had a 20 mile run and the game was at 10:30. :rolleyes1

Richard & Debra - We'll have to get together for a run and/or meal, since we're at POFQ and just down the path. We arrive around dinner time on 1/6 and check out 1/12. I think we're planning to have dinner Saturday night at the food court at POR, but that's always subject to change!

Kathy
- We're doing Boma for breakfast this trip. We'd actually be happy to eat there multiple times, but it's becoming a post-5K tradition now.

Corinna - Great race report! Sounds like you had a good race all around, and saved enough for this weekend as well.

Richard - I've already offered DD the wedding buyout option. She, however, has the entire wedding planned already, as well as the honeymoon (at WDW, where else?)

Debra - If DOOD doesn't step up to the MIL plate, one of us may have to. We could bombard her with emails from strangers saying "You're not wanted. Stay away!" Would that be subtle enough? Fortunately, my inlaws aren't fond of WDW, but they do have an annual convention that meets in Orlando the same time as marathon weekend. Last year they kept trying to schedule dinner with us, and I conveniently had plans for every night made well in advance. Maybe they could share with your inlaws? As for dining, we're going to try Portobello Thursday night - never eaten there before (anyone have any experience?), and we're returning to Artist Point Sunday night for our celebration dinner. We had such a good experience there last year that we're trying again - never a good idea, since it's almost always a letdown, but the wine has to be good regardless. After 39.3 miles, I don't think I'll care! Other than breakfast at Boma, those are the only ADR's I'm making, unless I sneak in a late lunch at Kona on Monday. Gotta make that call this weekend!

I need to get in the shower - DD should be on her way home for fall break, DH should be on his way home from soccer, but the dogs are finally tired from their romp and crashed at my feet and it's QUIET. :ssst: I NEVER get quiet moments. I thought with DD away at school that there would be more of those, but between DH and 2 dogs... Just finished a 10.5 mile very humid run and it feels really good to just sit and DIS for a few minutes!
