Team 'Ohana 2009: No One Left Behind

Hello 'Ohana cousins! Thanks for hosting another great mixer! Let's see ... I'm looking forward to Up, Harry Potter, Terminator, Night at the Museum - Hank Azaria is always a hoot! And while it's not a summer release, I'm also looking forward to Where the Wild Things Are. I'm on the fence about Angels and Demons - Tom Hanks wasn't the actor I pictured when I read the book and The Da Vinci Code.

I LOVE theatre popcorn and tons of butter - even better when the person making it layers the butter. Yeah, I've got a bit of a problem :) but I'm trying to be good about it. I went to see Star Trek tonight and didn't get any! Yay! Some of my other favourite movie theatre treats are frozen yogurt and peanut M&Ms.

I went to a drive-in a couple of years ago... I didn't like it as much as I thought I would. It was by the lake and on a hot summer's night so I missed the a/c a little.

Denise: You know, I don't often go in for bio-pics, but I think Meryl is going to step this film up a notch or two. (I'd say, "Bam!" Emeril-style, but that would be the wrong movie.)

Maria: Anderson Cooper make the top mom crushes list? Cool--I understand that; I think DOOD and I both have a crush on him. Of couse, I'd be severely tempted to leave DOOD for Anderson, so that might not count as a mom crush. Not that that's likely to be an issue. :lmao:

Jackie: Thanks for the recommendation on Night. (You, too, Richard!) The film looks like all the actors are having a great time--sort of like the Cannonball Run series of films, and that makes it appealing. And the previews for HP are stunning!

Mel: Wait, wait, wait...so your ideal movie-going experience is one where you're not really watching the movie? *Sniff, sniff* I sense another alien creature. And what must you think of me, who has a separate line-item budget for movie-going? :lmao: Naw, I'll watch films and t.v. shows, and do other things sometimes, too. But I don't need to tell you that seeing a film in a movie theater, fully immersed in the narrative, sights & sounds, is a different experience altogether. Or a drive-in, where the location with its distractions are the point.

Vicky: Isn't that the diffculty with adaptations sometimes? The film and its characters are never what we picture in our heads. I think part of the reason I adapted so easily to Harry Potter--another shout-out to those fans--was that I saw the first films before I read the series. It's hard to think of adaptations as separate entities. And I, for one, don't really like Tom Hanks much as an actor. I think he's a strong actor, and a likeable person(a), but I guess I don't care much for most of the roles he's been given. :confused3 Angels and Demons is more about the genre for me. And big thumbs up to Where the Wild Things Are.

That's the fun part -- you are grown-up enough to realize that this isn't ever really going to be an option -- so it's just fun, not an obsession (well, I guess it could be an obsession, but I think they have laws to prevent you from getting too close...).

Maria :upsidedow

Jackie: Thanks for the recommendation on Night. (You, too, Richard!) The film looks like all the actors are having a great time--sort of like the Cannonball Run series of films, and that make it appealing.

Debra, I think that's a really good comparison, only I'd say Night at the Museum is a better film than Cannonball Run, but they were both definitely fun to watch.

Maria: You like the same guys I do! I hate to tell you this, dear cousin, but when it comes to Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom, I will scratch your eyes and pull your hair out to win them from you! (Aside from that, I love you very much!) I also like Anderson Cooper, but not in a hot sort of way. Please bring back "The Mole"! It was one of my all-time favorite shows and he was the ultimate host.

About "Night at the Museum"....it looked a little dumb, but I absolutely HAD to see it because I practically grew up in that museum and knew it like the back of my hand. (AND I had to see if they showed my favorite(?) exhibit that I loved to hate -a huge wet and slimy looking worm - but they didn't!)
OK, it WAS dumb, and if you know NYC, alot of the stuff was inaccurate, but it was lots of FUN and Ricky Gervase always cracks me up. Plus Ben Stiller is kinda hot in a nerdy sort of way (it's all about the dark hair) so that was a plus. I look forward to seeing Night II because it's just going to be a fun experience. Plus, I don't know the Smithsonian nearly as well so I won't be bothered by any of the innaccuracies. Of course, there was the time that my 3 year old daughter got lost in the Air and Space Museum and I nearly had a heart attack........

Jackie: we can have a "girl" date any ol' time!

Jen117: how ya feeling? Any first trimester symtoms got you down? What are the ages of your 2 other girls? Are they excited? (Good grief, I'm like the census taker.....)

Richard: I was just catching up on some old posts (from about 2 weeks ago!) and I think your friend needs to meet the Greek and give him some worthy advice. It's been 10 months since he asked for her hand, but that very hand is still without a ring (or cigar band , for that matter!) It will be very interesting to see what happens when this event reaches the one-year anniversary. I don't want to speculate, but it is not going to be pretty. Ahhh, love......

Ok, cousins, that's it for now......gotta go do some real work!

Hello Cousins!

Sorry I have meen MIA lately - things in real life have been really busy since we got back from Disney.

The Disney trip was awesome! The weather was amazing and crowds weren't too bad. The kiddos did a couple of the Kim Possible missions in Epcot which were really cute. We stayed at BCV, which we loved! We had great meals too. Can't wait to start planning for next year.

Debra - Great mixer question, as usual! :thumbsup2 I'm looking forward to Up, Night at the Museum II, and Harry Potter. I also just took DS7 to see Earth, which we both really enjoyed.

Nancy - I'm glad that you are doing well and back to work already. :goodvibes

Jen - Big congrats to you! :flower3: I also have 3 kids, so if you need any advice on how to handle being outnumbered by your kids, just let me know.

Jeanne - Thanks for those mini golf passes. They were put to good use during our trip. :thumbsup2

Maria - Are you looking forward to the warm weather we're going to have this week? Could hit 90 on Thursday!

Corinna - Congrats on the Groton race. I can't believe how hot it was that day. Gotta love New England weather.

Mel - The Dirty Duo looks like fun! Even if you DNF, it sounds like you and your DD had fun together. :)

Richard - Great race report. :thumbsup2

Jen B - Glad to hear that you liked the new AKV. We're thinking of staying there next year. :)

Hello to all of my other cousins as well! I hope to get caught up here (as well as in real life) very soon. I hope to be running a half marathon this weekend (Maria, will you be there?). I haven't been doing much in the way of training - that WDW trip really threw my training schedule off. I'm also having some IT Band issues. I couldn't even run 3 miles on Sat, so I'm not sure what the weekend will bring. I'm concentrating on doing the exercises that my PT gave me and resting and hopefully that will be enough. We'll see...:scared1:

Have a great week everyone!

Hi Julie!

Great to hear from you! I will not be at the Race to Remember, but Dennis will. Are you going to be wearing WISH green?

I can't wait for the warm weather! I'm actually out of the office Thursday and Friday, so as I travel from meeting to meeting, hopefully I'll get to see and feel some sunshine.

Maria :upsidedow

Hey Cousins... I did some biking today. I am trying really hard to stay active (it's hard!)

For census taking Jeanne... I am SOOOOO tired all the time. Knock me out tired. Otherwise nothing else but wanting to eat like crazy! I never had morning sickness with either girls... so knock on wood!

When the baby is born, my girls will be 6 and 9. Emma turns 9 in October. I know it's a big gap, but well, that's how it happened! I am a little panicky about starting all over with running, but maybe that will help me lose some baby weight. Heck, I still have baby weight from my 6 year old!!!

Too bad you won't be there. It would have been great to see you! I don't have a WISH shirt, but I will probably wear my WISH hat, depending on the weather. I'll try to keep my eyes out for Dennis, but I'm not sure I'd be able to recognize him after meeting him just once. Rob might recognize him though. Rob is really good at remembering faces, and he and Dennis spent a bit of time talking at the Pop meet.

I hope that you get to enjoy some of the nice weather we're getting! :goodvibes

Don't worry, Julie, we're just all super busy these days. Plus, I think FB has stolen some of our posts :scared1: I'm so glad the passes to mini-golf came in handy. I hate to see anything go to waste.

Speaking of WISH shirts, does anyone know when we will be having a new order? I've had my shirts for 2 years (13 events!) and they are starting to look a little raggy. I PM'd Carrie a few days ago, but she hasn't gotten back. I really prefer the older Alert T-shirt kind since they fit me (and John) so much better than the prettier Race Ready ones. So if anyone hears of an order going in, please let me know.

I just finalized my dining plans for WDW. We are getting the meal plan, which we don't usually do, so I have to be sure to get all my workouts in or I'll be paying for 2 seats on the plane going back.

Jen117: glad to hear morning sickness is not an issue for you. It seems to me that your girls are the perfect age to be a helper to mommy.....gotta train them right! :thumbsup2

OK, so in my opinion.....and I realize people will differ with this.....I think both the Gilles from DWTS and Adam from AI got robbed. I realize that at this point it's really nothing more than bragging rights, AND the folks that won are also talented, but I think both people that came in 2nd were by far superior to their competition. How does everyone else feel?

Sunny's working on updating the front graphic to include a wheelchair racer, cyclist and walker. We're trying to wait until that's done because we have to add the copyright mark now and every change in the graphic costs us a setup fee. I'd still really love to find a new vendor that can fit everyone so we dont have to have two separate orders.

Totally agree. I didn't watch the dance show as much, but from what I saw, I thought Gilles was pretty fabulous. As for Adam...far superior talent, but I think it's a good thing he didn't win. Now he doesn't have to make that first lame Idol-sponsored album and can do his own thing. Both the Kiss and Queen songs he did were amazing. And I think Brian May still has it, but Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley might oughta think about retiring :scared:

Not to mention Rod Stewart - is he ill? I am also an Adam admirer, though nothing against Kris. I think he had a corner on the tween girl phone block, though, which is HUGE. He was too cute to lose.

Sorry I've been away so much, so long. Life has taken over a lot. Still training, still losing. My father in law was visiting last weekend. The weekend before that I got to see my sister's graduation in Las Vegas. I am including a few photos from my run on the strip. Before that, I was doing follow spot for a play and in the middle of the run of the show, had my trip to Massachusetts. I think I posted something about that and how hot it was, so that, in reverse, kind of catches up what I've been up to, I guess!

Oh, and I got to see Star Trek twice - once on that first Thursday night and again yesterday on the IMAX screen. WOWIE wow. But I must say this: I feel like I spotted more questionable story/writing things the second time through. It will be interesting when this thing comes out on DVD.

In Las Vegas, we stayed at the Luxor. It was nice except for the massive Transformers ad on the front of the pyramid.

It was warm that morning, but I made it as far as the Venetian before I turned back!

P5090855_2.jpg

I also have a bit of a crush on Anderson Cooper. He's the most adorable newscaster on TV.

And finally I am thinking strongly of doing the DL Half this year. Have not registered yet, but am waiting for some hotel quotes from Kira! :goodvibes

Am also thinking of doing the "Hearts and Minds" 5K this weekend at como - it's part of the same series as the "Challenge Obesity" race I did earlier this spring. It's a race to honor those recovering from traumatic brain injury or other neurological problems. Given last year's concussion, I thought it was just the race for me! Only thing is, how is it going to impact my "long run" this weekend. After all, I have a 10 mile run in a little over a month. Crazy.

I need to go back and catch up a little now that the frantic cleaning for my FIL is over.

Hi 'Ohanamates,

I haven't had a lot of time for DISing or training lately - just the usual sick kids, dance recitals, birthday parties, sick kids, etc, etc, etc
I did finally get to the gym yesterday after almost two weeks with no exercise. This is the longest I have gone since last summer with no activity. Hopefully I'll be able to get back into the groove again.

Debra - I'm on FB too - but of course you know that. I'm still trying to figure it all out - which other cousins are there?

Mel - An Ohana meet on marathon weekend would be fun. We still don't know where we're staying yet. The past three years we've opted for POP - so probably there again.

Julie - I'm glad you had a great trip to the world. My girls are looking forward to trying out the Kim Possible Missions. I tried a few of them by myself when I was there for the Princess marathon. I wanted to test run it before we all did it together. I'm still not sure about how well they will share one Kimmunicator.

Jen - Congrats on number 3! :dance3: Also, glad things are looking better with your brother and family.

Richard - Congrats on your race - loved reading your race report!

Corinna - running the Vegas strip looks like fun. We stayed in one of the pyramid rooms at the Luxor. The slanted elevators always surprised us when they first started moving.

JenB - Glad to here that you like Kidani Village. We'll be staying there this summer. Any advice, recommendations, pictures to share?

Maria - My SIL is also doing her first half marathon next Jan at WDW. She has just begun her training and is doing great. It's fun to hear her excitement for this first race.

:rotfl2::rotfl2:Scott Baio/Shaun Cassidy:rotfl: - we must be the same age

Jeanne - I'm glad that you were able to finalize your dining plans. I still need to do that for our summer trip. When are you visiting WDW?

Ok, need to get to bed. the plan is to get up early and get to the gym for some biking and weights. We'll see - sleep always sounds like the better option when the alarm goes off.

Actually, they set it up so that it beeps every few minutes and whoever is holding the Kimmunicator has to give it to the other person. Both of my kids had plenty of time holding it. I had thought about having DH & I split up with the kids so that they could each do a mission on their own, but they wanted to do it together. I'm sure your girls will have a blast. When are you going?

Debra & Ohanian cousins- Just a drive by posting wishing you all a nice Memorial Day Weekend. Hopefully nice weather where ever you are.
Please take a moment and give thought to the meaning of the Holiday, and be safe where ever you travel! :thumbsup2

Jack- (Team Hakuna)

Belated Happy Birthday to Jen and congratulations on #3.

Corinna-- It looks like you were enjoying yourself in Vegas.

Kathy-- I can answer for Jeanne when she will be in WDW as we are there at the same time and will be dining with her and John for alot of meals. Next week at this time I will be landing @ MCO & Jeanne arrives on Sat.

JenB--- I would like to stay at Kidani Village, but DH doesn't like it at AKL as it was so far away from everything. The only way I will get to stay there is if I tell a little white lie and say when I went to make a DVC reservation the only place open was Kidani Village. I was tempted to do that for my Oct trip but chose SSR instead.

Julie-- So glad you enjoyed your trip to WDW. Anyone this week has had to deal with excessive amounts of rain.

Jeanne-- I will look at what size my old WISH shirt is and you can have mine since I have only worn it like 2x. Maybe while we are at OKW we can get in a power walk together one morning since we haven't walked together since ToT.

Debra-- I am more than glad to walk the ROAR race for you, as you are one of the fortunate ones who survived that terrible disease. I hope in the future that more focus is put into getting awarness out there about Ovarian cancer, just like has happened with Breast Cancer. In my job, I unfortunately only see those women whose disease has progressed and now have a terrible prognosis. Women empowered can do wonderful things, look how far the Susan Komen Foundation has come from a women who started something to honor her sister.

I need to get some books together for vacation. I read so much while I was recovering that other than that James Patterson book, I haven't read anything else since getting back to work. As for movies, we usually go once a year at Christmas time and just wait until the DVD comes out. I just watched Marly and me. Would like to see Angels& Demons and Night at the Museum.

Still working out at the gym. I tried an interval class on Wed and my legs were like jelly all night. It was quite the workout and different from other things that I do. So may add that class to my weekly workout.

Hope everyone has a great Memorial Day weekend. Thanks to all the Vets who have served our country.

Nancy

Happy Memorial Day weekend, everyone!

And thanks, Jack, stopping by to remind of us of the importance of the day....:goodvibes

A little pre-race support for the following cousins on their races:
5/24, Run to Remember 1/2 Marathon, Boston: Dennis and maybe Julie
5/25, Hearts and Minds 5k, St. Paul: Corinna (maybe)

Facebook Members: Kathy asked, and it's a good excuse for a roll call. Who's on FB and how might we find you, if you desire to be found? (Some of you probably have work friends, etc., so you might want to stay incognito!) I'm on...just look under D.K. Peterson. (I'll delete this in a few days because of some of that desire to be incognito myself.) I will friend all cousins, 'Ohana and others.

Okay, so Night in the Museum goes in the Netflix queue....

Richard: A film that's better than Cannonball Run??? Blasphemy. :rotfl2: (I actually showed a clip from CR in an American Humor class. So sue me.)

Jeanne: Oooooh, The Mole. DOOD and I loved that show when Cooper hosted it. I guess I go for the grey-haired men, considering DOOD's luxurious locks and all. But you and Maria should just step back if Johnny comes across our paths.

WHAT??? The Greek still hasn't given DD a ring? What's with that? I'd want to be a fly on the wall for that one-year engagement anniversary date. :lmao: (Not that I'm one to judge...I considered my engagement to be its own destination.)

Your trip is coming up so fast! Where are you eating? Food porn, food porn, food porn! (It's PG-rated. :lmao:)

Julie: I didn't realize that there were Kim Possible missions at Epcot. Sounds like a lot of fun (I enjoy the show). I saw your post about your ITB issues and the race, and I'll answer here as well. I'd probably bow out at this point, unless you think you can do the distance walking. I wouldn't want to risk further or more severe injury--I'd say, "I's not the last race I'll have the opportunity to do."

Jen: Crossing my fingers for an easy, no morning-sickness pregnancy! And that your cravings are healthy, or at least not too disgustingly strange! :rotfl2:

Mel (and Sunny): I love that the new graphic will be representative of all our athletes. Thanks, as always, for your hard work on this. :worship: And for the ice-cream contest link. I'm definitely doing some brainstorming.

Corinna: Love the pictures! You're always so photogenic. You HAVE been busy, but it's so cool that you haven't let it interfere with your running and weight loss. I admire that and envy it, frankly. :cool1: How was ST on IMAX, visually. That's how I wanted to see it, but we live within walking distance of a regular theater, so...

Have you decided whether you're doing the DL 1/2 yet? It's so tempting. And your "Hearts and Minds" race is such a good cause. It sounds as if the whole series is well thought out and well supported.

Kathy: First, congratulations for getting back to exercising. I think it's harder the longer you go. My body forgets the benefits. Or my mind lulls it into thinking there are no benefits... I had no idea you and Mike were at POP last year. Apparently there were lots of folks I never saw? That's what happens when you travel with ILs.

Nancy: I can't imagine how difficult it is to work with patients with such prognoses. I'm truly one of the lucky ones. And I think you're right--women working together can really make a difference in our health care (and other issues)! YAY for trying a new class and mixing it up! No wonder your recovery and weight loss have been so phenomenal!

As for me: Let's see...took a rest day on Thursday and XT today. Tomorrow is a LR. I snagged two passes to an advance screening of Up, which will show on Wednesday. It's perfect timing, since DOOD and I are out of town next weekend to go to Stratford. This weekend's film is Terminator Salvation. I gotta get me a little angry-sexy Christian Bale.

I've been reading Orson Scott Card's Alvin Maker series and a non-fiction book, The Ten-Cent Plague: The Great Comic-Book Scare and How It Changed America. The former isn't quite what I expect from alternative history, but still enjoyable. I just finished Walter Tevis's Mockingbird, a speculative fiction classic. Next up is Berlin, a graphic novel by Jason Lutes, to be followed by S.G. Browne's Breathers, a zombie novel. (And that will be followed by Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, currently on the NYT Best Sellers list.)

Oh, yeah. DOOD and I signed up to do Baltimore this fall. I'm doing the 1/2, he's doing the full. We should finish about the same time. :rotfl2:

Hello cousins......glad to see lots of posts again.

Kathy: I will try to find you on FB and we can be friends. I think I have everyone else that is on Ohana and has a page. I was just thinking how Nancy really needs to get a FB account.......I hope she doesn't mind that I have SO many photos of us together on my profile.

Nancy: doing a power walk will be nice. I'm starting to stress out about having the meal plan and questioning my decision to get it. It's gonna be hard for me to keep it all under control with the "one price for all" mentality. I'm usually quite disciplined the first few days, then blow it all to pieces and end up being disgusted with myself. I was thinking about resurrecting my old pedometer and using that as an incentive to work it off. When I used it at WDW before I always aimed to get 20,000 steps/day which was slightly under 10 miles for me. I know it's a vacation, but I can't afford to gain any more weight.

Happy Memorial Day weekend everyone. Thanks to all our vets and servicemen out there. No big plans for us, just a little golf and perhaps catch a movie. It will either be Star Trek or Night at the Museum. I just saw that they are coming out with "My Sister's Keeper" next month. Now THAT was an awesome book! I hope they stay true to the story.
