Team 'Ohana 2009: No One Left Behind

Good Evening, Team Ohana!

Ok, this has been a mixed bag weekend. I did all my workouts and ate really well -- except for last night when I enjoyed a clam plate and twizzlers. I'm regretting it now. I guess I'm just grateful I stopped last night and haven't had anything scary today.

This week's weight loss was .6. Not exactly stellar, but good after my two "3" weeks. I'm hoping to do well this week, but it's an odd work week, so time will tell. I'm out of the office and at others mercy for lunch a few days, so it will be challenging. On the bright side, I'm really feeling like I'm in a workout groove. :thumbsup2

Richard -- You had to go and mention the Kitchen Sink...ice cream is a wondrous creation, isn't it? Congrats on your race. Even with the cramps, it sounds like you are pleased. I am impressed you can identify individual muscles! :worship:

Debra -- I haven't even thanked you for the last postcard! You are spoiling me! Ok, so it's going to be interesting with SIL and BIL. She has walked one 5K, and her dh runs about 3 miles when he runs, which I gather isn't on any schedule (yes, this is shades of the Greek). They do not do any exercise per se, but are naturally thin. I think they took one look at me and decided if I could do a Half, they should be able to do it in half my time (not that they would say it out loud, they're not rude or anything). When they decided to join us, Dennis made it clear we are each running our own races (he doesn't want to be bogged down by them). I'm going to run my own race, too, and it will be interesting to see where we each come in. I don't know what they put on their registration, so I don't know which corral they will end up in. I'm also not sure how the "partying" will work out. They are coming over from Tampa, and I'm not sure which of my nieces will accompany them. They still have two girls at home, 18 and 10. If the 18 yr. old comes, we might actually go out and do something. If not, we will be probably be "partying" at the Magic Kingdom or somewhere similar -- maybe I can talk them into one of the Parks that serves alcohol...::yes:: Good luck with the boxes. Our attic runneth over...

Mel -- The Dirty Duo looks like a blast! What a great thing to do with DD! I'm glad you enjoyed the day, even if you DNF. It looks like one lap was plenty! :goodvibes

JenB -- You forgot the most important part of your trip -- we need details on date night! No, not that kind of details -- where did you eat? What was completely yummy? The Foodies want to know! :rotfl:

Jen -- party: Congratulations on your newest little miracle! I'm sorry we'll miss you on marathon weekend, but we'll have an ice cream toast to you!

JenG -- That sounds like a great race! I wish you a wonderful experience! :cool1:

Before I forget, Dennis is also doing a Half next weekend. It's called the "Race to Remember", and has a great route through downtown, over the salt and pepper bridge to Cambridge, and back to Boston. It benefits the families of fallen police officers.

Ok, gotta run. A great night to all!

Maria - I think perhaps you misunderstand, my comment was not about having great-looking leg muscles, but that the cramp was so severe that overlapping muscles were no longer overlapping, and was obvious just by looking at it.
As far as the ice cream goes, we understand each other perfectly!

"A good film is when the price of the dinner, the theatre admission and the babysitter were worth it." ~Alfred Hitchcock

By now, most of you have figured out I like movies. A lot. Perhaps an unhealthy amount. Nevertheless, I think it's fun to talk about movies, especially now that the summer season has started. Wolverine has been released, so has Star Trek, with many more big blockbusters soon to come.

So this week's mixer topic is, predictably enough, summer movies!

What summer movies are you looking most forward to, and why? Also, how do you like your summer movies?

Feel free to talk about how you choose your flicks: based on directors, your favorite movie star, a beloved genre? And what is your ideal movie experience? Midnight movies or matinees? Chain theaters or independents? Drive-ins? What about the movie-going extras? With or without snacks? Buttered popcorn or chocolate?

Oh Debra, movies are so very special to me also. I miss the big screens and the balcony. When I was young like 10 years old young, my parents would drop me off at the theater that was showing double features instead of hiring a sitter. That way in the summer when I was out of school I watched movies instead of going to day care. I watched a lot of what are now classics like, Bob Hope, Jerry Lewis, Dean Martin and Frank Sanatra. I watched a lot of cool Si Fi to, as well as all the war movies and the westerns.

I knew back then that I was going to be a military man and fight our nations enemys, I would follow in the footsteps of John Wayne and Clint Eastwood. For a boy growing up in the 50s and 60s going off to the high adventure of war was as good as it could get.

I also wanted to be a secret agent like James Bond or a gunslinger in the wild west but you can't have it all.

I love adventure movies like the Indiania Jones movies, I like nthe X Men movies and really enjoyed the Wolverine. We are looking foreward to seeing the Angels and Demons movie this week.

Movie Lover Panda:hippie:

Maria: Congrats on the wt loss and good workout groove  anytime the scale goes down it is good, those .6's add up. If you must know, we ate at Saana, the new restaurant at Kidani Village-- the food is mostly Indian based-- we got an appetizer of breads and dips: naan and some other yummy flat bread with hummus, cucumber riata, and coriander chutney-- the chutney was spicy but good. We split a sampler type dinner with tandori ribs and chicken with rice. The meal was really good with a great view of the animals as we ate. After dinner there was the most beautiful rainbow I have ever seen extending over the entire AKL Jambo House-- it was amazing. I tried to take pictures but they don't do it justice. Of course I thought of my cousins while eating a No Way Jose as well (no real mystery were those extra pounds came from...)

As for movies: I love sci-fi so we are excited to see the new Star Trek. I'm also really excited about Up because I have this soft spot for Pixar films. We rarely get out to the movies so any flick with popcorn and air conditioning is good by me popcorn::

On the subject of movies....DH and I have two theaters that we frequently visit. One is a big 16 screen theater, the other a small independent theater with only two screens. We actually like the smaller theater better, but sometimes they aren't showing anything that we're interested in. We did see Cars there however! We always get popcorn and a soft drink. Sometimes, we'll even make that our supper!

The movies that I'm looking the most forward to this summer are, in order, Star Trek (hope to see that this weekend) Angels and Demons, and Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.

Debra you don't know what you've gotten me into...
I'm a huge movie fan. I've already seen Star Trek (twice, and the new Captain Kirk is my new imaginary boyfriend) and Angels and Demons. Both were good.
I'm looking forward to Up and Night at the Museum 2, but I'm most looking forward to....
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (It's my favorite book in the series).

Hoping to see Star Trek (Only Once Jenn :goodvibes but really want to see Night At The Museum II with my wife. How cool would it be to work in that Museum?
I enjoy fun movies, Sci-Fi are nice but I really enjoy laughing
:lmao:............

Just a quick "drive-by" posting for me on a busy (and to be a very late) work day.

I'm wanting to see Star Trek, Up, and Night at the Museum II this summer. I've already seen Star Trek twice and may go see it again. I'll likely only see the others once ( at least only once before the DVDs come out.

Hello to all my dear, dear cousins......and visitors as well!

So sorry for being MIA.......I just can't seem to get my act together these days. There's been lots of travel lately....first Nashville, then MI for a combo fun/business meeting over an extended Mother's day weekend, AND in less than 2 weeks we'll be at WDW with Nancy and her crew. It's all good, but it means I have lots of real work to catch up on and that translates into alot less time for DISing.

Jen117: Congratulations on the anticipated blessed event! Hmmmm, marathon weekend.........he/she can be the newest member of the WISH scream team! Can we get a t-shirt that small? So sorry you won't be joining us at the races, but expect you back in full form the following year! Also happy belated birthday to you. I think I remembered the event on your FB, but gotta give you your props here too.

JenB, Richard and Mel: Congrats on your recent events.......sorry you each had to deal with some adversity - weather, cramps and just plain muck!

Nancy: glad to see you posting again.

Maria & Richard: Please don't spill any Star Trek beans.....I fully intend to see it soon. I've heard it's quite a great flick, but here's a question: Will I still enjoy it even though I don't know much about previous Star Trek films/series? I'm way more of a Star Wars fan myself.
Speaking of movies, we saw Angels and Demons yesterday. It was good, but I really wish I had read the book beforehand. It seemed to move so quickly. And we finally saw "Monsters vs. Aliens" the weekend before.......was it the Wooly Bully part that reminded you of me, Deb? I was looking for a wasted middle-aged woman, but couldn't find any! :rotfl:

What movies am I looking forward to this summer? Probably Transformers II (or whatever it's called), Up, and Night at the Museum would be among my top choices. And I have an idea for a future mixer question: how about we discuss some of our favorite not-so-well-known movies? We all know and love the big blockbusters, but what about all those lesser known films that are pure charmers? I've got lots of those!

That's it for now, folks......hope to be back again SOON!

Jeanne - I will spill no beans for you. However, knowledge of previous Star Trek is not needed. You could miss a few inside jokes, but it seems they wrote the script to include picking up new fans from ground zero.
Enjoy!

Hey Cousins... We spilled the beans to the girls and they are beyond excited, especially Emma (she will be 9 this fall!). They are sad about no marathon weekend tho!! Mel is on my call list, so she will let you all know when and where it happens, tho Magic Kingdom is doubtful!!!!

I know DH is dying to see Star Trek, Emma is dying to see her love Zac Efron in 17 again, and well, I haven't really thought about seeing a movie. It's so sad that I rarely go to the movies anymore.

The good thing is that the girls have rekindled their relationship with their cousins and my niece is 13... BABYSITTER!!! These are my brothers kids, whom some of you may know has been a bad bad bad family problem. Things are different these days and I have talked with my brother twice now.

Good Afternoon Team Ohana and Visiting Cousins!

The summer movies I have been anticipating are Star Trek, Up, Night at the Museum, and Harry Potter. I loved Star Trek, and I'm hopeful for the others. I think they will be fun, but the reason I really anticipate the last 3 is that I can see them with ds, and they're good mother/son activities. The older he gets the more creative I need to be. I was thrilled to have a new Star Trek movie, and Zachary Quinto is my new "mom crush".

My favorite way to enjoy the movies is on my couch -- so that usually means Netflix. I just like the option to stop, get whatever I want, and watch whenever the mood hits me.

In the theater, I like for there to be other people, but not too near me and not noisy. My favorite movie treat combines those two icons, popcorn and chocolate. Try mixing milk duds in with your popcorn. That is seriously decadent. I like matinees, because I'm fully awake. At night there's always a chance I'll nod off...I remember drive-ins, and if I could find one we'd go. I've recently discovered the Director's Hall at the theater (leather seats and staff to bring you concessions, plus better sound), and I have to say that is a great way to watch a movie.

DH really, really doesn't like to watch movies, so it's rare I see something that isn't aimed at the Tween set.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Maria :upsidedow

Hey Debra!!! :wave2:

Movies for the summer I am looking forward to seeing:

Star Trek
Wolverine (Hugh Jackman, need I say more?)
UP (Disney/Pixar!!)
Angels and Demons
Night at the Museum II (I loved the first one)
Public Enemies (Johnny Depp!)
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

That's all I can think of.
Believe it or not I am not a big popcorn fan. I think its because I worked at a Movie theater while in HS and college. I have to make it and clean up after it and so I kinda got a bit sick of it! I do enjoy a good Icee and some snowcaps.
I love stadium seating and I sit right in the middle about more than half way up, the best seat in the house!

Tracy

Jeanne: Transformers II? Really??? THANKS for the suggestion. You know I love it! Your mixer question will go into the mix--hah!--after you get back from your trip. It sounds like you're too busy to be on here beforehand (reliably), I don't want you to miss posting because I selfishly want to hear your recommendations, and I'm trying to vary the silly with the more serious prompts. I'm going to miss you (have been missing you) when you're on your trip, but look forward to the stories.

P.S. Wasn't there any hard-drinking women in Monsters v. Aliens? I could have sworn there were.... :rotfl: Naw, it was "Wooly Booly." Just a little something that made me sit up and go, "Hey!"

Dave: I can so see you and Indiana Jones! Especially with the whip. :teeth: I also love the Bob Hope road films, Dean Martin & the rest of the rat pack, and even Frank Sinatra's overall acting. (I was surprised by his talent in The Manchurian Candidate.)

JenB: I'm really looking forward to Up, too, and not only because it's Pixar (although there is that). It's the only animated feature to open for Cannes. 'Nuff said.

Mary: I have the same experience with the chain theater v. the independents. Sometimes I just don't want to see another art house film (which is what shows at my independent). Unfortunately, the smaller house seems to have better popcorn, so what are you going to do? :confused3 :rotfl2: Let me know how Angels and Demons is, when you see it. I'm curious but probably won't get to seeing it until June.

Jennifer: Ooooh, you know what I love almost better than movies. Movie fans! :thumbsup2 Harry Potter makes my short list and it's one of the films I'm definitely seeing in IMAX.

Jack: I didn't see the first Night at the Museum, but every time I see the previews for Night II, I giggle. And DOOD is a little worried about me because it's EVERY time. So, should I watch the original? (I know it seems a silly question, but II appealed to me much more.) Jennifer, Richard, Jeanne, and Tracy: weigh in on this one, too!

Jen: Good news--no, great news--about the girls' excitement for the new baby AND your renewed relationships with the family. (And beyond the babysitting potential!) You and DH deserve a movie date-night soon. Because come January it might be the last one you have for a lonnnnnng time! :sad2: (for no movie-going) :yay: (for the baby)

Maria: What is a "mom crush"? :confused3 I understand the idea of a crush, but the mom part confuses me? I love matinees--some people, not too many, and discounted tickets--and Director's Hall/Premium seating. And one day I'll tell you about the milk dud incident. But my big question is how can your DH not like movies??? Truly, that befuddles me. In my world, he's an alien creature and I feel like I should view him with suspiscion, circling around him and with my nose twitching just a bit in alarm. :lmao:

Tracy: I want to work in a movie theater--sounds like fun--even if it comes at the expense of losing the popcorn love! (Mmmmm, can't imagine, but I'll take your word for it!) I'm definitely seeing Public Enemies--and not only because of Johnny Depp. (Although I might have seen every film he's been in...I'll have to check.) And I generally follow your stadium seating rules for best view in the house. Love the stadium seating.

As for me: I anticipate seeing all the films y'all have mentioned and then some. I'll probably see Terminator: Salvation this weekend, for example. I'm probably most looking forward to Up and Inglourious Basterds this summer. What can I say, I run the gamut to family-friendly Pixar to the profane funniness of Tarantino.

For summer blockbusters, I like the chains, with the stadium seating, functioning air conditioning, and IMAX screens. When I'm not bringing my own snacks in, I like Raisinets and a diet soda, occasionally a popcorn. But my favorite theaters are the independents with balconies. And once a season, I like to do a double feature at a drive-in. There's just something about making an evening of the movies at a drive-in: pulling out the blankets and picnic, watching families play frisbee before the show, not being able to quite understand the dialogue....

And the drive-in is nostalgic for me, too. The first movie I remember--Sleeping Beauty--I saw in the drive-in. Drive-ins were part of my growing up experience. And DOOD re-proposed to me at the local drive-in (double feature of The Simpsons Movie and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix). Good times.

OMG, I can wait for Meryl Streep in Julia Child

Debra -- A "mom" crush is a crush -- but you're either an experienced mom or old enough to be one and so it's not an "I can't sleep without kissing the Scott Baio/Shaun Cassidy posters on my wall since one day I will be his wife" crush (yes, laugh, but you know you've been there). It's a "He's a total hottie, but of course I adore my family and wouldn't actually leave them for him" crush. :thumbsup2

Top "mom crushes" on the Family Fun site include Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt :lovestruc, George Clooney, Orlando Bloom , Anderson Cooper, Will Smith, you get the picture. This year's bonus crush was Barack Obama, but that's just creepy to me. I can't bring myself to crush on the President of the United States. :rolleyes1

I agree, my dh does oddly seem to be an alien, perhaps that's why I was so attracted to him :rotfl2:

Debra - LOVED Night at the Museum. Not usually a huge Ben Stiller fan, but all three of us laughed out loud many, many times during the movie. Definitely recommend it!

Maria - Matthew McConaughey, Patrick Dempsey, Derek Hough...

Jeanne - Maybe we need a movie date, since we can't seem to get together for anything else!

My summer list... still need to see Star Trek, want to see Angels & Demons (liked the book, though since I have a horrible habit of forgetting the book within hours of finishing it, the movie should be fresh since I can't remember what happened in the book!), would love to see Night at the Museum 2 and Up, but absolutely must see Harry Potter. Prefer the chain, since the variety is better, and must have the popcorn and coke.

Jackie

personally, I put M&Ms or SnowCaps in the popcorn. They're best if the popcorn is fairly warm so the chocolate gets all melty.

I'm not a huge fan of going to the theatre...don't like sitting still for that long and not getting anything else done. I rarely just 'watch' TV or movies...have to be doing something else as well. I also couldn't believe $6.50 for a matinee when we saw Star Trek...seriously??? I like the rental concept (and now Netflix) where you pay less for everyone to watch...and I can be doing 6 other things. Yeah, I never said I was normal. ;)

I'd like to see Wolverine, Harry Potter, Up, Angels and Demons, apparently all the standards. I would definitely see Star Trek again...likely to be one that we buy on DVD when it comes out. Read Angels and Demons...I liked the book better than DaVinci Code.

Does the mom crush include, 'he's really hot,but I'm old enough to be his mom"?

I didn't see the first Night at the Museum, but every time I see the previews for Night II, I giggle. And DOOD is a little worried about me because it's EVERY time. So, should I watch the original? (I know it seems a silly question, but II appealed to me much more.) Jennifer, Richard, Jeanne, and Tracy: weigh in on this one, too!

Debra - I was never interested in the first Night at the Museum but I happened to catch it on DVD with family and liked it a lot. It really is a very fun movie and I recommend it.
