Team 'Ohana 2009: No One Left Behind

Hello team, I hope everyone had a good weekend. Great job to everyone for your March miles/min

Richard: congrats on the PR :cool1: It's nice to hear you had a good weekend-- you deserve it.

Nancy: I'm so thrilled to hear you are doing well and getting moving. Congrats on all of the weight loss too. :lovestruc

I finally dug out of work and had a chance to relax a bit this weekend. Friends from college came to visit this weekend with their adorable 9 month old, so we hung out and caught up with them. We also bought a drum set for our Guitar Hero wii game and spent a few hours rockin' our with friends :rockband: The boys had poker night on Sat and the girls spent the evening watching movies popcorn:: We saw Run, Fat Boy, Run-- it really made me laugh, I think I was in the right mood for it.

I'm off to exercise and watch some Amazing Race-- I'll catch up with everyone at the mixer tomorrow.

Debra - I am leaning to the half IM, but it is more expensive and requires travel...although it is a half IM!!! No, I didn't eat any crawfish, I just can't get past the smell--technically I could get past it if I wanted, but I really don't want to. Although I will try to post a picture of the crawfish plates that each runner got.

Corinna - It was a fun race, and I like the photo you posted about. It's always nice to see someone who can smile while running.

Maria - Thanks, and yes meeting her was awesome!

:rockband::bday:party:

Happy Birthday Debra!!!

On the Mixer topic, my favorite non walking workout is an hour of sprinting in the pool. I go to the 5' side and sprint with high knee lift down and back, every 4th lap I go backwards and every 10 min I stop for 20 dips at the pool corner.

Training Panda:hippie:

Good morning O'Hana!!!

Happy Birthday! PD to all who need it! And hugs to everyone!!!!

I have lots of things that I do for cross training. Not all at once, though. I switch up when things get stale.

Bellydancing (makes me feel graceful and sexy!)
Pilates (makes me feel like I might someday have a flat stomach even though I didn't have one even when I was a teenager!)
biking (Lots of fast miles!
Bender Ball ( svelte)
stability ball (In control)
tried Salsa dancing. My version should have been called salsa falling!
Walk Away the Pounds. (Nice change from the TM!)

They all make me feel great for different reasons!

See ya! Connie

:bday: Debra!

My favorite kind of cross training is my Dance for Musical Theatre class.
My strength training class has a unique name aMazing Muscles (and yes it's always capitalized strangely like that).
I also do Zumba and Pilates.

Variety is the spice of life, so they say. (But don't ask me who they are, although I suspect they work for McCormick. :confused3) With that in mind, this week's mixer question is:

What types of XT do you like to do, and why? What are your old favorites and new discoveries? What kind of XT would you like to try?

For me, the triathlon disciplines of swimming and biking are somewhat forced cross-trainin activities. I really do enjoy the variety of a triathlon, but I am a runner in my heart. I have also been getting into weight-lifting as an additional training activity lately, it has helped tone my arms and legs...not so much for the big stomach yet , but they say Rome wasn't built in a day. I would also like to try yoga for a change of pace, but don't have the time for a regular class.

Debra - What would McCormick put into a package of the "spice of life"? Is that a Soylent Green forerunner?

Oh, and thank you for letting us experience the greatness that is Debra.....

HAPPY BIRTHDAY !!!!!
:banana::flower3::yay::love::hug::love::yay:

Debra Happy Birthday! I will drink a scotch in your honor (tough, I know, but someone has to do it. What--YOU want to do it? Alright, I suppose since it's your birthday!)

As for XT, if I'm not....
-jumping to conclusions
-pitching fits
-driving people crazy
-flying off the handle
-jogging my memory
-hopping mad
-kicking back-throwing my weight around
(No wonder I'm in so much trouble!) ;)

....I can be found biking and swimming in what is becoming a more scary concept of doing a tri.

Maura

It's Mixer Monday!

My XT consists of Yoga and the Exercise Bike. Yoga is offered at work, and the Exercise Bike is in the basement, so it's pretty much a no-brainer. I also like to do dvds, when I can move the Wii crowd out of the living room. I think the wii mote is surgically attached to ds's wrist...:goodvibes

I guess I'd like to try the elliptical, but that would involve a gym, and I'm not ready to go there yet. :scared1:

Back in the dark ages I took aerobics and body sculpting classes, and I really enjoyed those. I'm just bulkier and less outgoing now. That was 60 lbs and a pregnancy ago...:rolleyes1

Maria :upsidedow

Thanks, everyone, for your birthday wishes. At this time last year, I was at the Poly enjoying my 40th. This year, I'm in rainy Pgh, making jambalya and DISsing. (Guess I have to wait at least until my 42nd to claim that I deserve a yearly WDW birthday trip. :rolleyes1) So if I can't be at Disney, I'm delighted to be with my WISH friends.

Corinna: I love that picture of you in the 5k. You do look happy and you're so photogenic. :goodvibes I always look like I'm about to die or to kill the photographer. Crossing my fingers on the cultures!

Maria: I didn't even know you were having knee pain. No wonder you've been struggling a bit. I'm so glad slowing down has helped you continue to train. Er, consistency. :teeth: (And you do know you don't HAVE to post a goal, right? I'm just a nag at heart.) And a big woo hoo on the loss! :woohoo: It's a 3 smiley post!

I'm so glad you've got the workplace yoga. I see as it a gateway class into a gym and the elliptical, the machine that I both love and love to hate. And 80s aerobics classes here. With a leotard, tights, and big hair, as I've confessed to before. :sad2: I drew the line at wearing eye liner and lip gloss while working out, though. :rotfl2:

Denny: Maria's post reminds me. We absolutely have to have a group chat about Lost as the season ends. Mel, catch up with the series!

JenB: OMG, I can so see you and DH rocking out to Guitar Hero! I just see you two as this really musical couple who (and this isn't meant to be derogatory) embrace their inner rock stars!

Richard: I've never understood crawfish, but I was raised in the north and have been a veggie most my adult life. But I think the idea of creating this running community, post-race, via a healthy (ier?) food is just great! And dude! (Not to be confused with DOOD :lmao:) When did you post your link to your blog? How have I missed it? :confused3 I love new reading material, and yours is so interesting. (Plus, the title just say it all.) Oh, and Soylent Green. I thought I was the only person here who knows that film! :yay:

I've always imagined you triathletes--yes, you are one, even if your heart is with running--as triple threats when it comes to XT. And weight-training on top of that. No wonder you don't have time for a yoga class.

Dave: Ah, your pool sprints. You've talked about these before, especially going into last season's racewalk training. They serve you well and have allowed you to both rehab and get faster. Great idea! :thumbsup2

Connie: A special PD to you. I just read Hakuna Matata's thread, briefly, and will try to get over there to say hi. Just PM me if there's anything I can do. Those terms you use to describe your XT: feeling sexy and svelte, etc.? You'd make an excellent salesperson. And salsa falling just made me laugh!

Jennifer: Wait, wait, wait. I didn't know you had a Dance for Musical Theater class? I knew about Zumba and Pilates, and that you took a ton of exercises classes. And that I want your core strength, too. But the dance class? Wow, sounds like fun! What's your major?

Maura: I think we both deserve scotch. I might even take it with a splash today. ;) Your XT list:
As for XT, if I'm not....
-jumping to conclusions
-pitching fits
-driving people crazy
-flying off the handle
-jogging my memory
-hopping mad
-kicking back-throwing my weight around
Hilarious! That's pretty much my work life (and my personal life, if I admit to it.)

And your tri training is going well, right? I hope, oh how I hope.

My response to the mixer question:
My XT interests tend to go in cycles, depending on what I'm attempting to accomplish.

  • Right now, I'm focused on weight-loss, so I do a lot of elliptical. It's sort of my go-to exercise for burning a lot of calories relatively quickly and keeping my HR up. (It's also the way I lost 50 pounds a few years ago, so I tend to return to it when some of those nasty pounds track me down.) I tend to add elliptical training to another workout, like after a TM run or before weights. I'm working on liking the weight training, and know I need to do more of it.
  • I've also become a big fan of Pilates. When I stick with it, I become more flexible and my core gets stronger. And I do dream of the flat tummy.
  • Strangely enough, I love the rowing machine. Maybe it's because there's never a wait for them at the gym. But during the summer I also like canoeing, so maybe there's a connection there. During the summer, though, the rowing machine will fall to the wayside because I hope to be in the canoe. With a picnic basket and a bottle of wine.
  • It's been a long time for either of these, but I keep meaning to return to yoga and/or tai chi. I like the illusion they give me that I can be graceful, plus the mental concentration.
  • And what would I really like to do someday is learn how to swim. Yep, that's one of my dirty secrets. I can't swim, and so I both admire and envy all you who do.

As for me, personally: Yes, my b-day today and I really do appreciate all your acknowledgments! Doing nothing special, though, until DOOD's birthday on the 23rd. Just a busy schedule right now. On the upside, DOOD got me a couple of cool little gifts: He renewed my Pittsburgh Filmmakers screenie subscription (more movies, discounted cost!) and got me a gift membership to D23. I was all excited there, because I thought he was hinting we'd go to DL for the September Expo. Apparently, though, he was unaware of that perk. So now I need to inform him of what precisely D23 is that it's worth the membership fee. Would've been cheaper to get me that Wii.... :rotfl:

Richard:

P. P. S. You lost 44 pounds. I knew you'd lost a lot of weight, but I didn't know the number. Congrats. I think you look great, and knowing the work you put into it is just icing on the cake. (Non-caloric, of course. :rotfl2:)

Just out of curiousity I did the math, and now I will do the really shocking thing and post the actual numbers.:scared1:
My current weight (as of several days ago, anyway) is 219, which is the halfway point between my high of 263 and my wedding weight of 175.
So I guess that means, 44 pounds down and 44 pounds to go!

I only linked to my blog earlier today, good catch! Although, I hardly think it's exciting reading, but you never know if I may meet an Olympic champion or something.....

Just a quick drive-by for now...:car:

Happy Birthday Debra! :bday:party::cake: I hope you're having a great day! If I had bourbon in the house, I'd drink some in your honor. :drinking1

Richard & Corinna - great race reports! :thumbsup2 Thanks for sharing.

I'll be back soon to catch up with all of my cousins.

Just popping in to wish Debra.....

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!

party:party::cake::cake::cake:party:party:

(It's been a crazy day....post more tomorrow)

I'll join in the Happy Birthday wishes party:

As for my XT I'm a bit unconventional...

I use the elliptical a fair bit (more since DH hurt his foot during the marathon and we bought one for home-- I'm with you Maria and if it involves going to the gym I'm much less likely to actually do it)

DH and I play racquetball to change up the exercise and have some fun. This was actually our prime source of entertainment in med/grad school-- the gym was close and free, so we spent lots of time playing.

Dance Dance Revolution on workout mode is great to get my HR up and again DH and I play against each other, nothing like friendly competition :rolleyes1 We actually have the game setup using stepmania on the pc and it can do grouping of songs that play continuously, no resting in between to choose a new tune. We do 20-30 song sets on crazy hard and really jump around. :yay: for a different 45 min workout.

Happy Monday all...

:bday: Debra!!!!

XT for me is a long bike ride on Sundays, trying to get up to 15 miles to be prepared for future duathlons. On Tues, we go to the Y, where I ride the stationary bike for 30 min, then do circuit training for 30 min. There is a swim class on Tues that I'm thinking about taking.

We finished season 4 of Lost, just trying now to catch the end of the current season so we can catch up on season 5.

We have a new member of the family. Meet Lola:

DSC05781.JPG

She's a 1 yo Aussie from Aussie rescue. I think she looks a bit like Jackie's doggie. She's meant to be a companion for DD6. We have two border collie mixes already, Lucy who is 14 and Katey who is 9. Tigger, the cat, is NOT impressed.

Mel - She is just adorable! My oldest has planned for a long time to eventually have a dog named Lola. Whenever she mentions it I go into song, altering Barry Manilow..."Her name was Lola, she was a show dog, with yellow fur all over her...." and it gets worse if I ad lib from there on spoofing the Copacabana lyrics, plus I have zero or less singing talent.
Then again, isn't it my job to embarass her anyway?

:rotfl: we hadn't even thought of that one! We're still stuck on the Kinks. "Met her in a club down in north SoHo where they drink champaign that tastes just like cherry cola...L O L A...Lola"
