Good luck with your "not so simple" job.

Thanks!

Your fridge story brings to mind another point. The current cabinets, are, of course, not standard, so when we went to replace the Harvest Gold fridge 3 years ago ;) , we had to buy a shorter than average one because the hole wasn't tall enough... Now, we'll have a standard opening, and are still trying to figure out if we are going stainless or not (I posted a poll a while back), but the current fridge may look odd as it'll be much shorter than the opening, and the new cabinets will come out further and so be more noticeable.

Anyway, thanks again for the sympathy and good wishes.

I don't know who built this house, but I'd like to meet him in a dark alley some night. :headache: None of the original light fixtures were grounded (?), the light switches in the bedrooms all work outlets that are in places you can't have lamps (and no overhead fixtures installed), etc., etc. Simple jobs just never turn out to be simple, and even this kitchen, which we knew wouldn't be "simple" is more complex than it should be... Sigh.
:grouphug: I know exactly where you are coming from. DH and I say this about our house ALL the time. DH was painting DS's room and the previous owner had a boarder up, it was a cute, but I don't really care for borders. Dh started to take it down, pieces of the dry wall started coming with it. He had 2 use a whole thing of spackle to fix it:mad: In our powder there are 1 inch x 1 inch tiles on the bottom of the wall (the top is painted). They PAINTED the TILE! We are so afraid to touch that room, becasue we don't know what we are going to run into.

Just so you know, you're not alone!

Definitely NOT alone.... my condo has so many "questionable" components I don't know how it passed inspection for my purchase :scared1: Case in point - I went to switch out the flippie switch for the dining room chandelier for a dimmer switch. Inside the wall, I found not one, not two, not THREE, but FOUR live black wires all notted up together and attached to teh flippie. Paired with them were 3 white wires, 2 reds and a single ground that appears to be connected to NOTHING. I couldn't find an entry in my Home Depot book that looked like what I had, so I winged it. :rolleyes1

And blew up the dimmer switch.

I called an electrician who capped all the excess wires, while shaking his head and mumbling about teh idiot who wired this place. I haven't tackled anymore lighitng projects.

This sounds like ALL the wallpaper we've taken down... :) We took some down below our chair rail in our family room, and one section would come off fine, obviously put up over nicely primed drywall, but the next one over would be over another layer of wallpaper over UNprimed drywall, so that we were taking off all the drywall facing... Sorry about the bathroom, though!

Ohhhh..... I tried myself to replace the kitchen overhead and ran into the ungrounded ground wire, but not a bunch of live ones! ;) Then, D. replaced the outside front door lights and they weren't grounded, either... :rolleyes1

I am sure NONE of the wiring is up to code - we're scared to call an electrician for anything, because we're afraid to be told we'll have to rewire the whole house! :scared1:

Thanks, both of you, for making me feel better. This is actually our first house (big, but we knew we were having twins when we bought it) and we sometimes feel that we weren't smart enough. It makes me feel better to know that other people (smart people!) have the same issues. :grouphug: for all of us!

Oh CE you are def NOT ALONE. We are just about finished with a 2 YEAR, yes you heard me 2 YEAR renovation/addition.(Library is the last to be finished) It was HELL!!!!we lived in the house somehow and came across all types of "fun" stuff. Thank goodness all is new now but WOW it makes ya crazy.
Just try to think of the outcome. We are here for your venting.

I havent had time to catch up on this thread, but how was your driving trip??

I just need a small vent...

As you may recall, we are having our kitchen remodeled. We had heard before we went on our driving trip that it would most likely start on 8/9. I called yesterday to see if that was still good, and the "kitchen lady" at first said 8/13, but then said, no, 8/9. Fine. I got plastic totes and have packed up all non-essentials out of my cabinets.

She called this morning to ask if we could be ready by Monday! Sure... A little more panic, but doable.

So, I got into my lower corner cabinets this morning to dig the end stuff out (this cabinet is one of the things I'm most excited to replace. It's just an extremely deep cabinet with no lazy susan or access to the back.) That's when I notice the 2" PVC pipe running along the wall.

This is bad, because it comes from the sink and will interfere with the lazy susan and the pull-out pantry cabinet that are supposed to go into this space. :scared1:

I hurriedly call the kitchen lady, who is calling a plumber to come and see if it can be moved, if he can come before Monday, etc. :sad2:

I'm sure it will cost plenty, but the most upsetting thing is that it's there in the first place. NOTHING is easy in this house. When D. redid the upstairs bathroom by himself 4 years ago, we ran into these kind of weird problems all over. They had run the hot water heat pipe through the tub, for example, and we had to have it moved to the studs... Sigh.

Sorry for the rant, but I had to get that off my chest, and I felt that I might get a sympathetic ear or two here. :grouphug:
Oh- you're not alone. This is my 4th house we have bought (we move a lot) and I still have problems.
Case in point.......this week my 2nd heat pump blew up......that's 2 in the 6 months we have lived here for those of you keeping score.
The repair guy said "well, ma'am, you shouldn't have built a deck over the heat pumps--they can't get no air that way and it'll void your warranty if they find out..." :headache: :headache: :headache: Uh--I didn't build this house!! so no body tell the warranty people, ok???

I need a new favorite mug to drink my diet coke out of:lmao: . I now use a tall ceramic Hard Rock Café mug. I love this mug. No one else uses it, washes it or even looks at it for more than a moment. I want a Disney one. Here is were you all come in. Where in WDW is the best selection of mugs? It is going to be hard to beat the one I have but I will give it a serious try when I am down there this month.

My vote would be for the World of DIsney or the Mickey Kitchen Place, both at DTD. Good luck on your hunt:thumbsup2

We drove through NH, MA, CT, NY (slightly), NJ, PA, MD (barely), WV (barely again) and into VA before stopping for the night in Winchester, VA.
Glad you had a good time CE but you do realise I haven't a clue what all the above is don't you :rotfl2:

(.......and I just have the biggest cat--Jo is the one with the 34 EEEEEEEE):rotfl2:
Ooooooooooo :rotfl2:

Oh, NO! I didn't mean to leave you out! :)

Translation to British:

We drove from New Hampshire, into Massachusetts, then Connecticut, then a bit of New York (the state), then New Jersey (boy, do we steal your county names or what?), then Pennsylvania, then barely into Maryland and West Virginia, finally stopping in Virigina.

Boy, that's hard to type - I kept automatically typing the abbreviations whilst I was thinking of the names...

Are you back, Jo? Or, not 'til tomorrow?

Ooooooooooo :rotfl2:
Translation: CE drove through all the Yankee states (NH, MA, CT, NY (slightly), NJ, PA, MD)and finally crossed over the Mason Dixon line and was thankful to end up Virginia (although Northern Virginia's Southern connections are questionable!)

:lmao: :rotfl: Thanks!

I love it that people thought it was serious! :rotfl: :rotfl2: :lmao:
I know--I can't believe people are still posting on it! (dare you to start another one.......what would be controversial?? Space Mountain should be torn down....Disney should allow you to purchase the dining plan from any hotel ( I do think this would be great).......Pool hoppers should be shot on site.......
We should think of some more!

(Keep in mind I'm from the Midwest - this whole Eastern thing is still confuzzling to me.)
