Teachers

he hates activities, group work, etc. Anything that sounds like the new buzz words. But like I said his classes do well.

wow, I didn't know that anyone still wrote out gradebooks and attendance records. I do planbook and gradebook on the computer.

Here's how many times we take attendance each day:
8am - Scantron sheet
9am - Scantron sheet
noon -Scantron sheet

White paper - handwritten
Yellow book - handwritten
Red book - handwritten

Then, at the end of the month, we also have to check our records with the computer printout from the 3 scantron sheets.

So yeah, that's SEVEN times EACH DAY we have to notate the attendance PER CHILD.

I'm also working on a blog. I am hoping that these two things together will meet my technology requirement.

How about a Webquest? That might work well too.

I did a Webquest in one of my Technology Education courses, and I am doing one on my own for teaching interviews.

Webquest would require bringing in the laptops and group learning. Not things he likes.
But this is what happened today. He suddenly decided to use the computer and the projector for with it today, when I was using it 8th period. He never uses it. When it was a half hour from my class the computer started acting funny. I thought, well ok if it goes I can use the overhead projector and sheets. It would be bad but I could wing it.
Well, then the overhead stopped working too. Turns out we blew a fuse. I didnt' get started until fifteen minutes into a 40 minute class, plus I was all flustered. I am thinking sabotage to keep me from using the tech.:)
Either way he kind of proved his point by saying see, you can't count on technology. I recovered but it was very difficult.
I was thinking of printing the notes and making a photo copy for the kids. This way I could focus on the lesson, use a power point or video clips instead of having to spend all of my time watching to see who is getting all of their notes done. The power point didn't work too well because I couldn't advance the page because some students are very slow with their note taking.
oh, and I get this red blotchy thing that happens on my neck, chest and sometimes face when I get flustered. I deliberately wore a turtleneck just in case. I'm so glad. I bet it creeped up onto my face.

Why. Do kids get up and leave class randomly?

Good luck! We just got 2 student teachers in 2 math classes this week.
My placement wasn't ideal, either. I was handed Pygmalion and was told, "Teach this." Blech. Then when I had my second placement, my mentor teacher welcomed me, then left to get his car detailed. I had no lessons planned as it was my first day. I think I had them write me a letter about themselves, just so I had something for them to do. Then I planned a unit to start on a Wednesday (the day I was "taking over" the class), and I was making copies for the teacher on Tuesday and came back to find him teaching my unit. I was SOOOOOOOOO angry.

Don't worry too much about student teaching. Plan for how you want things to go, have a back up, and remember, when you have your own classroom you can do everything YOUR way! My first year teaching was joy after my student teaching placements, and though I complain, I love my 7th graders.

I have been a full time substitute for 8 years and had numverous field placements for school. None have been this bad. Plus I'm worried because in my content area they are telling us we need an A to get interviews.
Plus I'm in this biggest loser contest at my gym so no ice creak, cupcakes or alcohol. I think I needed a glass of wine tonight.

Oh and because of the way my coursework has been spread out it's been 6 years since I had US history two and I"m spending all my spare time now reading about the cold war to prepare for the next unit.

Wow Tiggeroo - that's some tough stuff!

Why. Do kids get up and leave class randomly?

Well, I'm sure there's a handful around the school that do, but that's not the reason why. The reason is that they want to be sure it's entered into the computer correctly!

Wow they completely don't trust you to do basic adding or take roll. That is just sad. Most schools I've been in do not take paper roll at all. Once on the pc.

Hate to tell you this.. but a 4.0, double major two cert person can't get interviews! (yes, this is me) I have two BA's (education and writing).

I have had one interview and I have sent resumes to about 50 positions. I am looking in three counties in my state. I have certs in elementary and middle school so I can go from K-8th grade. I have urban and surburban experience, 5 years of subbing, and 3 + years of special ed.

I have actually applied to corporate positions using my writing degree as a base. I'm at a point where a contracts administrator looks great.

My student teaching was bad. It was in a very bad area plus a lot of racial problems and a tough CT.

Sorry to hear about the technology flubs. It happens. You can't let it get to you, and you can do it. I can say that if I can survive student teaching (and get an A) you can to! It was the worst experience and I am stronger for it. I can't tell you the response I get when I talk about where I completed my student teaching... I get a lot of "That must have been hard" or the horrified look!

I know job hunting is tough. I am trying to be cautiously optimistic. 50% of NJ teachers are supposed to be retiring over the next 3 years. Some jobs will be gone due to attrition and budget cuts but some must open up. Also, my kids are all in college now and dh's location is very flexible with his work. I can and will move if needed. That's an advantage right now. Almost our whole evening coursework is being devoted to job search. We are creating digital resumes and portfolios as well as paper, having mock interviews, going to career fairs, working search engines, etc. So this seems to be one strong component of our program.

My evening seminar class (Rowan) was the same thing, resume, portfolios, mock interviews, etc.

I'm hearing from a lot of retirement aged teachers that they thought about retiring and aren't going to do it because of the economy . I've heard from many 30+ yr. teachers that said they won't leave unless they are "dead at their desk".

The job market for teachers has changed drastically in the past year-- I take that back in the past 6 months or so.

I interviewed for a position in Burlington County. While waiting there was a girl from BERGEN county also interviewing who drove 2.5 hours to get there! I commented that she drove far and she stated that this position was the only one in the state and she would drive 5 hours round trip every day if necessary.
