Teachers and Parents - Homework Question

Don't have kids yet, but I've been talking to my dh about what to do with homework. You see, my parents made me do my homework in absolute quiet - and I firmly believe that, as a result, I now can't do my work unless i have quiet - I get distracted easily. My dh, on the otherhand, was allowed music and can do his work with other things going on. So we were wondering, what is the actual recommendation for kids doing homework? Quiet, soft noise, what?

I always did my homework with noise or TV. I let my kids do their homework where ever they want as long as it is done properly.

i could never do it in the quiet---thats because i had a lot of cousins ,and we would all sit and do homework together, so it was anything but quiet!
Now, im in college, and still need the tv or radio on when i do my work

I think it depends on the individual. Maybe your parents made you do homework in absolute quiet because you wouldn't get it done without distractions.

It depends on the kid and the homework. DS needs it to be pretty quite when he is doing math. Soft music is ok, but if we are taking, making dinner, etc. he gets too distracted. The twins can do their homework anywhere. You will figure out what works when the time comes just like you will figure out that one type of discipline doesn't work across the board for all children.

I think parental preference--but just like a sleeping baby--to always have complete quiet--or too much noise.....then it becomes a necessity later on.

I needed quiet--but more b/c I am easily distracted. I can get work done with sound--just takes me longer.

So far our son can not do homework with the TV on, he watches. Music is a different story. He can get stuff done when his favorite music is playing. This year starts the bigger homework assignments so I'll be monitoring again to see what is required.

So far no TV is allowed for obvious reasons. As far as "noise level"...absolute quiet does NOT exist here...

I am a student, and I can do it anywhere. I like music going, or background noise, but I don't need it. I am the same with any kind of work.
