Taxes on free dining plan?

Did anyone else get charged taxes on the free dining plan? My TA gave us a quote for our package with free dining and the price is slightly higher than the cost of the package for just tickets and hotel only and no dining at all. My TA told me that the dining plan is free, but Disney still charges taxes on the dining plan. Anybody else experience this?

I guess it would be like when I redeemed loyalty points for a hotel room (not Disney) a few years back. I got the room free, but I had to pay the taxes based on what I would have been charged for the room. There is, after all, an assigned price for the plan, so it's not difficult to calculate the taxable amount.

I wasn't charged for any additional taxes. My plan cost the same with the free dining as it would have if I had booked just the room and the tickets.

I booked by FD package directly with Disney. Then went to WDW's website to compare price and it was exactly equal to the website price, minus the FD. Disney didn't charge me tax.

I am not completely sure, just guessing, but perhaps it depends on the state you live in. I work for a company that sometimes offers free stuff, or discounts and depending on the state the person lives in we may or may not have to charge tax, even though it's technically "free".

I added free dining to an existing room and tickets package yesterday. My package price did not increase - it was exactly the same. Therefore, I did not have to pay taxes on the dining plan.

This has been my experience for all 3 years that WDW has offered free dining.

I would challenge your TA on that one.

Uh.... even when you DO pay for the dining plan, it's not taxed. There's a few taxes on the resort portion, there's a tax on the park tickets... but there's no tax on the dining plan. Look it up.

:cutie:

I'm curious about this too now! Because the price the CM quoted me at the beginning of the call was 4067.00 and at the end, it was like 4102.00 or something. I didn't think about it until after I hung up and with free dining I wasn't gonna quibble over it, but now ya'll got me wondering. . .hmm? Could it have been tax?

Could it have been insurance? It is $59.95 per adult.

I didn't get it, in fact I'm going to either have to call and add it on or get it from another source but I want to insure the trip. That was a thought though! It's only like 35 dollars so like I said for free dining I'm not complaining! I just wondered about it again after reading what the OP wrote.

Curiouser and Curioser!

like the other poster said the ddp isn't taxed when paying for it so there wouldn't still be a tax even though the cost is free.

The other amounts must have came in somewhere else. Like having miskeyed something to start with or a ta fee added at the end when it all gets totalled up.

Op - tell us about your trip and maybe we can figure out where the extra came from... Need to know exactly what you are getting for tickets and how many nights at which hotel and how many adults (10 and up) how many children (3-9).

By they way unless you specifically asked for no insurance then had them double check that there was no insurance, I wouldn't count on it not being there. It is automatically added and even if you tell them no insurance it sometimes gets forgotten about.

Thanks! I looked at my ressie online and it says 'no insurance' so that was right anyway. But you're right before in the past it has just been added on to quotes i've gotten!

Maybe you were pricing a standard view online but with the free dining only water view or preferred room (you didn't mention which resort) was available

you could give me your specifics (number of nights, type of ticket and how many days, which hotel, adults, children age 3-9) too laren and I can try to figure out where the extra came from. Since yours is directly from disney It should be rather easy. Those ta fees i'd have no way of knowing. But disney's stuff is pretty straight forward.

We have 4 adults, 1 child(4), 1 infant(1 year), 2 standard rooms at Pop Century for 8 nights, with 9 day magic your way tickets with park hoppers on the Stay, play, and dine package(the free dining). When I figured out the quote with the tix and everything above without the dining I came up with roughly 2,775.13. My TA says my package price is 2,794. When I questioned her about the slight price difference she told me Disney said they charge taxes on the free dining, or maybe she meant the free dining package? Now, just to be clear I know this is awesome that we're getting free dining and I am NOT complaining. I just wanted to know from all of you wonderful people out there if you got charged for taxes too. I don't mind paying the extra $20, I just like to know what my money is going for ;) Also, we do not pay for a TA. They get a commision from Disney for selling us the trip. Thanks to everyone who has responded and who tried to be helpful to me!! Oops, I almost forgot, we specifically requested No Insurance.

I called back to add the insurance to our package- and asked the CM while I had her on the line, she couldn't explain it she said she'd never seen a package go up from the first screen to being on hold to being completed in one call. So I don't know where my 35 bucks went but frankly, I'm getting free dining I don't care! :rotfl: Perhaps it's just good to mention it so in case it happens to anyone else they can ask about it at the time.

The only theory the CM had was that the other CM might have had something in there wrong or changed something. But I don't know LOL

When I price out on disney 9/1-9/9 1 room pop 8 nights, 9 day hoppers, 2 adults, std room, I get 1280.34. When I price 9/1-9/9 1 room pop 8 nights, 9 day hoppers, 2 adults, 1 child, 1 infant, std room, I get 1513.66. If you add the two together you get 2794 - as you were quoted.

Although TA's get commission they sometimes come up with ways to get some fees from you. My aaa agent last year tried to tell me after the fact that I had to pay a $15 mailing fee for my documents since I couldn't pick them up. I found out about this fee when she called to ask If i wanted it put on the same card i had put my deposit on. Some aaa's charge that as well as a booking fee. My new one charges neither. These small fees are pretty negligable but could that's just the kind of difference you had...

Thanks beth_cam! I re-did the figures and came up with the same price. I'm beginning to think my TA didn't know what she was talking about when she told me I was being charged for taxes...Imagine that! :rotfl: I'll watch out for those hidden fees...so far(besides this erroneous statement my TA made) this agency has been pretty good. Since I've never been to WDW I just figured a travel agency was the best way to go...that is until I found the Dis  Maybe next time I'll just do everything myself ;) Thanks for your help though!

With the changes in the dining for 2008, how does this effect tax?
We have free dining in Dec08. When we eat at Disney, I am under the impression that we will be given a "fake" bill to be able to pay the tip in accordance with the amount. Is that correct?
thanks in advance

For 2008 there are still no taxes charged, not when it's bought (if you pay and it's not free dining that is) or when you use it at the restaurants. You are right that you will be given a fake bill which will show your total if you had paid for your meal and tip breakdowns of 10, 15, or 20 percent if I remember properly.
