klacey1 said:Well, I'm very upset. I did my taxes with TurboTax's online services (always have, never had any problems). It said I should receive about $714 refund from the state of New York-- right what I expected. Now, Friday night, I get a bill in the mail from New York State for $152, saying my return indicated I was a resident of New York City and therefore owed New York City taxes!!!!
I have never been a resident of NYC and poured over my refund-- I worked in NYC in 2012 but NOTHING indicates I lived there!!!
I'm just sick over this. I've been on hold with TurboTax for 40 minutes waiting to talk to someone, although I have a feeling they'll tell me that I'll have to take it up with the NYS tax department. Not sure who screwed up here, but the NYS tax department isn't open until Monday! I'll be worrying about this all weekend! No, it's not life-changing money for me, but I AM owed that $714!! I want to know how this kind of error happened-- especially because the TurboTax website is still indicating NYS accepted my return and I am due $714!!

We get some of it back from credits for a few things but typically our return is in the high 100's. This year we received almost 500 but that is because they did a refund to all taxpayers because of a "lost fund that was found". We also get taxed the following year on last years refund so getting a refund is not really that great. For us with state is a good thing just not to owe.

No. Do not mail it if unless it is formally rejected. Otherwise the IRS will flag it as a duplicate and may consider it an attempt to claim a 2nd refund. (Fraud).
The IRS lacks both common sense and a sense of humor
When I lived near Cleveland and worked there I had to pay a tax to Cleveland city. In theory because I drove in their roads. Perhaps something like that?
