Ok so we met with my oldest DD's teacher today to let her know about our Dec trip she was very excited as it turns out she to will be at WDW the same time with her hubby and thier kids. The thing that strikes me odd is that there was no letter to the parents to let us know there would be a sub teacher for those 2 weeks while she is away on holidays but yet some people on here are being given a hard time about taking their kids out of school so what gives. If it is good enough for the teacher to do then it damn well is good enough for teh parents to do IMHO. Oh and her kids are 14 and 16 not that it matters at all.

What school board do your children attend? Some boards are very strict about taking time off during the school year - your board must really like their teachers!

It's the Old "Do as I say, not Do as I Do!" ;)

Gee, that's really interesting, since TVDSB is-like all Canadian Boards-STRICT about taking time like that. I have a couple of friends who were nailed in the JetsGo fiasco, and their emergency return flights got them back the day that we went back to school. They were both raked over the coals, had to pay their supply teachers AND lost pay-even though the flights that had been booked were no more i.e. they had planned on being back before the end of the holiday and were left stranded. I even know of teachers that have won trips, went through hoops, and then were denied. EA's on the other hand have lieu days that they can use as they wish. Teachers do not have that, so it is really UN-BE-LIEVABLE that a teacher would be taking a 2 week vacation in December-when interviews are scheduled. I'd give my eye teeth to do that, but-like all teachers-will wait until I am retired.

My best friend teaches in the Peel Board and is as crazy about WDW as we are. She can take time during the year but she woulnt be paid for it. So she goes duing March break and lives with the crowds.

Mmm, yes, that's very unusual. When I taught it was "don't even consider it". I remember friends going through huge hassles to get away on a Friday afternoon...One of the things that makes me NOT want to return to the classroom, having to pay full fare and face the crowds!! Ds is in gr 1 and dd will start in a few years, but the words of my ex-principal ring in my ears so I won't mind taking them out--family time is important!

I sympathize with teachers who are restricted in taking holidays during the school year. It is however, their job and the 'hours worked' are what they signed up for. I know that substitute teachers do their best but the education is not the same as the continuity of the regular teacher. I do think that some leeway should be there (ie an extra day here or there) but two weeks at a stretch is pushing it, especially when she will have two weeks off at the end of the month.

Debbie the teacher is new to the school and to the Thames Valley board apparently as we have never seen her at the school before and my sister who also works for the board has no idea who she is. All I know is that she is very excited about going away and loves to travel (not just Disney). I didn't get into details about how she managed to aquire the time off or anything else it is not my concern. My sister has also taken time off in Dec to go on holidays and she works for TVDSB with the developmentally challenged kids.

Wow I'm shocked too that she could take 2 full weeks off. I have several good friends who are teachers in Kitchener and I believe they get 2 "personal days". I would imagine this would be all unpaid time for the teacher.

Both my parents are teachers - now retired. They never took time off during the school year for vacations and even when they needed to take a day off - ie caring for us when sick or PaDay etc. we never left the house in case we were "seen"!
Maybe this new teacher had some special allowance written into her contract? I'm sure many teachers would love to know how she managed this!

Well our DD brought home a letter from teh teacher regarding the teacher going on holidays apparently it was arranged at her other school and it was allowed to carry over to this year at DD's school. I would imagine it is unpaid but that is really none of my business and I am not about to ask her.
