Taking iron supplements

My GYN wants to schedule me for a fibroid embolization. :( I'm still trying to get my thyroid functioning properly first, as that is another cause for massive bleeding problems. :(

The ice crunching is a symptom called pica. I was crunching on Altoids mints like they were going out of style. Who CHEWS Altoids mints? One is usually too intense, but I was up to chewing 2-3 at a time.

As soon as I started on the iron supplement the Altoids craving disappeared in a day & a half. I still have 3 mint tins stocked up that I have no desire to dip into. :headache:

A woman in my office has pica and she chews about a tray of ice daily. She then started having the IV infusions which stopped the pica almost immediately and she felt better quickly. But then she could not "hold" the iron so she was getting infusions every few months. They also made her feel bad for a week after she got them (muscle aches/flu like).

She had they fibroid embolization this past Friday so I'll be anxious to see how she does.

I get the usual stomach problems from my iron supplement. I just stopped taking it a week ago to prepare for an endoscopy (iron can stain). And I find that the tiredness is pretty much gone so I probably won't start taking it again. I have follow up blood work scheduled for July so I was hoping to get off it then anyhow.

I have also been trying to increase my intake of iron containing foods.

My deficiency was initially caused by my bladder cancer. The tumor was bleeding heavily by the time I was diagnosed. After two surgeries, a bunch of chemo and still more follow up scheduled, the cancer seems to be under control. The doctors just think that it took my bones longer to start making enough red blood cells because of the overall shock to my system of the surgeries and chemo.

So hopefully once you treat the underlying problem, your anemia will clear up too!

Ooooh! Please tell me how she does.

You can even PM me. I keep putting off having it. From what I've read, it can take a full 4 months to really be up & about and able to lift heavy things. I keep thinking that can't be. Women who have had cesareans are picking up their kid in days. I live alone. I need to be able to lift a container of kitty litter & pour it, and do other things like that. :headache:

One woman in my office had it done a few months ago. She was on "rest" for one week and then during the second week, she teleworked from home. She came back to work and is ABSOLUTELY fine.

The woman who went out last week told me that she was told that she could not work for 7 days and then she would be back. When I see her, I'll ask how it is going.

Thanks. :goodvibes

no advice, sorry! I had been given by my dr. prescription iron, I could not take it. I have had to do the IV iron therapy for several sessions now. They cannot seem to get my iron levels up at all. Good luck!:wizard:

I'm sort of chronically borderline anemic... I've been taking a Feosol caplet daily, but during pregnancy took a prescription iron supplement. Actually, I'd like to get my GP to prescribe that same supplement for regular use as it did not upset my stomach or give me iron burps (irony?? ;) ) As far as the "backed-up" issues, I take a Cal-Mag-Zinc supplement every night (iron in the morning since you shouldn't take it with calcium) and that keeps me regular. (The Magnesium is the key).

Good luck to you. You're going to feel SO much better!

Thanks all!

I tried the supplement at night. Made it thru today, but my stomach was a bit queasy all day. Might try the Cal-Mag-Zinc, since I need the calcium anyway!

The only supplement that helped me was this one http://www.amztk.com/iron-vitamins I've taken this supplement and it hasn't constipated me even one bit! This was the only one that I was able to tolerate and the only one that actually got my numbers to go up. In addition these contain Vitamin C in it already which means I didn't have to add on any addditional supplement. Whoever I recommended this Iron to has also seen great results and it didn't constipate them.
