Our house has been on the market for 6 months next week. We only signed a 6 month contract with the realtor, and we've decided that we'd rather not renew or extend the contract.

Is there a normal procedure for taking a house off the market or do I just call the realtor and ask her to take off the lockbox and mail us the keys or have a friend pick them up? I'm currently living on the other side of the state to attend school, so I'd rather not do the drive to meet her in person, but I will if I have to. Thanks!

I would agree with you, but it should be done in writing, either e-mail or fax. First I would talk to your friend about willingness to accept the keys and look at the house. I would say something to the effect of:

Thank you for your assistance over the past six months. At this time we have decided to remove the house from the market and will not extend or renew your contract. Please contact "Y", a friend of mine at XXX-XXX-XXXX to meet you at the house when you remove the lockbox and turn the keys over to "Y", who will go through the house with you at that time to see that there has been no damage.
