Sylvanian Families

DD is going mad for this, everytime she sees it on the tv she is begging me to get it for her....

BUT its sooo expensive.

What would you suggest is a good starter kit?

I've seen the cottages but they come with no furniture and i would have no idea where to start or what furniture goes in what house.

So any advice would be appreciated.

We don't have any of it - my girls have never asked for it.
It does all look pretty sweet though, how do you feel about starting her off with some from ebay? As it's such an investment, why not buy a good condition second hand set to see if she likes it.

When I was younger my parents started me off by just buying a family of animals to see how much I played with them.... I loved mine so much they bought me the barge for Christmas, and I saved my pocket money for about three months and bought the restaurant.... I'd recommend buying her the little family first and seeing how much she likes them (It was obvious I loved mine to death when I made them a shoebox house, matchbox beds, etc....).... Then maybe get her a slightly bigger set later on?

She wants the house lol, the starter house is £26.99 but only comes with a table and chairs and 1 animal.

I want to get her some stuff for her Birthday, just no idea where to start.

I did look on Ebay but i dont really know what im looking for

We are coming up to car boot season. When I was a kid I really wanted this stuff and my mum bought me a ton of it at car boots for pittance. Obviously it's luck of the draw but you might just be lucky and find some bargains.

It's actually not cheap on ebay either usually - even the second hands sets tend to be quite expensive. My dd loves Sylvanians - we bought her the starter house first then fortunately she got given a load of Sylvanian stuff by a friend whose daughter had grown out of it.

Some of the sets like the restaurant or bakery are a similar price to the house you mentioned, yet they tend to come with more items. They are sooo expensive though - my dd is now after the Grand Hotel ...

Molly loves this series but she has had hers from birthday/christmas money or as gifts.

Her first item was the windmill nursery which comes fully furnished but you could then buy extra rooms for it and other little sets that compliment it (typically I can't see it advertised now so maybe its discountinued!)

The other 'large one' she has is the Fairground House.

It comes with a few pieces of furniture which is all that would fit in it anyway so you are not lumbered with empty rooms to fill. Again there are extra bits you can buy later if you/she want too

Personally I'd try and steer her away from an empty house to a shop, hospital or school which will come already with all she needs to start playing.

Grief it is expensive though

My older two weren't interested in this but my youngest was ~ we started her off with a barge which came with loads of odds and ends plus a family. She then used to save her pocket money and Christmas/birthday money to buy more families and furniture. We then bought her one of the houses one Christmas that was being discontinued and so got it half-price.

My niece who is now 28 had lots of the original Sylvanian items 20 years ago and now badly regrets letting her mum get rid of it hence we have packed all DD's up in the loft.

Me too, i'm 24 and used to have quite a lot and my sister had even more than me but they're long gone now along with loads of other older toys that have made a comeback I'm glad my auntie has kept the old Topsy and Tim books that were originally my cousins' as they've since been used by me and my sister and now my cousins' kids and the older stories are way better than the new ones

Sylvanian Families are just lovely My neice who is 14 has a great collection and I was hoping to be able to purchase some from her for dd but she wants to hang onto it. We have a local toyshop which has a great range but it's so pricey, so I'm thinking I may just buy a bit at a time and pop it away for xmas. I guess it's great for family and friends to be able to buy for dd.

Got a great bargain today, sleeping beauty vanity head and table half price in tesco direct. Just need the room to store it until she finally gets it

I totally agree the nursery is a good way to start, DD (7) has the hospital that comes with lots of tiny pieces .
I always put the families on Christmas or Birthday lists.

My DD has quite a lot of this - house, conservatory & all the furniture etc. At nearly 10 she now feels too old for it

I remember wanting a set but it was too expensive!! my friend had it all, the great big school and houses and lots of families I used to love playing at her house!! lol
