we currently are second seating for the April 3 Dream sailing. Main dining was full at time of booking and we are currently on the waiting list. I was just wondering your prior experience with this. have you normally had success moving from second to first dining? Does the waiting list automatically move us when available or do I need to be checking to move us manually? I guess I am just surprised because we booked our first cruise 5 months out and had no issues getting first dining. Thanks

Couple of suggestions. Call DCL (or your TA will do this, if you used one) once a month to "confirm" that you're still on the wait list. Sometimes you'll get a sympathetic CM who will go ahead and make the change. Increase the calls in the last month, if it hasn't come through yet.

If you're still on late seating when you actually check in at the port, go to where the dining changes are being handled (it'll be noted in the Navigator you get in the terminal where/when this is) and make the request again.

Most times these steps will get you changed. Sometimes not. But, since you're so far out from your cruise, I think you have a very good chance of being switched.

We've been moved from late to main seating 5 of the 6 times we've been on the wait list, but I never did the calling thing. It just showed up on the reservation one day that we had Main seating.

We are sailing February 4th. We booked it the beginning of May and got on the wait list for main seating right away. Just yesterday I got word that we were off the list and now Main seating.
Someone told me they keep blocks of seats open in Main, and fill them in increments as the date of sailing draws nearer (not sure if true or not). So it does pay off to get on the wait list. Good luck!

As the space in the dining room is roughly divided between main and second seating, they book a percentage of main seatings before only allowing second seating as an option. Once the second seating roughly equates to what the main seating has, it will open up again. Rinse, repeat.

And to think... 4 years ago I was all set to put down money to cruise, but didn't because it said only second seating was available. That was a non-starter with my young boys. They would have loved it, I think. If only I'd been on DISboards then and known.

We are also on the waitlist for main dining for our January cruise. I'm hoping we get switched because it's too late for my kids as well. I'm also hoping that being Platinum will help too!

We are 2 for 2 for the waitlist. Had to book late dining because that was all that was available. Put in request for main. Received it as cruise drew closer.

We're 4 for 5 times being waitlisted. We cleared the list anywhere from 3 months out to a week before the cruise.

I cannot remember exactly when we got it both times, but it was definitely within that time frame. If I recall they sent an email saying booking confirmation that looks like the original booking confirmation but has main dining on it instead of late.

Information given in this thread is not correct to my knowledge, all available seating ( bar a small percentage to cover late concierge bookings), is available to book, from the cruise release day. Blocks are not kept back or released , in a balanced way MAIN/LATE and I have never seen that even suggested before.

A small amount is kept for concierge who will get thier request if main or late whenever they book, that's it.

When Main is sold out, it's sold out, what people booking may see is that cruisers do cancel, and move reservations on, this typically occurs near paid in full date, thus may give an impression of a new release, but it's people who had main no longer going and thier reservations released back.

It's not block by block in equal amounts, really unsure where that idea gas ever come from.

If you wait list, it is looked at but not pro activally, so call DCL every so often, around PIF date is good.

Restaurant managers have the lists uploaded three date before a cruise, they allocate them then, they can move some tables around, so can at times squeeze a bit more in in main if thry need, Main is most popular with young families, late with adults only if adults with high teen children who eat at 8pm at home.

3 times we were put in late seating...........We like to eat earlier and requested the Main seating. 2 times we got it and once we did not. The time we did not get it , it was a late booking, so we wer not surprised.

You are 100% correct. Just got a confirmation email yesterday and didn't understand why since my balance isn't due. Sure enough they switched us to the main seating. Thanks for tip. :)

But, I'll point out, that it doesn't always work that way. Most of the times we were switched, I only found out about it by checking online. We didn't get an email notice.

You should give second seating a chance if you've never done it. If you're skipping the show that night, then the time when people are getting ready for first seating is a prime time for the pools and slides. In fact the only time I regretted late seating was in Alaska because, being east coast people, it was way, way late for us by the time dinner was over.

I used to think that second seating was too late, but two of the last three cruises we specifically asked for it and we requested it for our upcoming cruise. I liked having more time to do stuff during the day before having to go to dinner - you can skip a show if you want and/or are running late, but skipping dinner is kind of a bigger miss for us. When the kids were smaller, we insisted on a late afternoon nap and we at a later lunch to hold us off. It worked out really well for us also because their attention span during shows was great, they weren't tired. We maximized as much as possible our time on the boat, so we did a lot of ship exploring after dinner which was great and helped with digestion :) over all, I prefer late dining now. Point being, if you end up stuck with it, you'll still have a great time and will probably find a way to make it work for you. Good luck to you!

We took a chance on our first cruise and went with the Second Seating and it worked out so well we are doing it again for our next cruise.

I think there is a great chance you'll get your request. We were wait-listed (party of 4) for main dining when we booked for this October and I got the word we were moved about a month later (June). You'll receive an email stating your reservation has been confirmed just like when you booked, but under dining it will say "Main".

I've also heard you can head to guest services to request a change when you board, or even during the cruise.

We're traveling with a 1 and 4 year old, and their "witching hour" hits about 8:00 so the late dining would have been a nightmare. :) The 1 year old still isn't the best at sitting still for more than 30 minutes, so we may be a buffet family this trip. Which is fine by us.

We booked our cruise less than 3 weeks before our sail date and only 2nd seating was available. With 2 young children this was almost a deal breaker for us but we decided to take a chance, figuring that worst case scenario we'd eat at Cabanas for dinner (it was our 1st Disney cruise). We were put on the waiting list. I called to check back once. 8 days before sailing, I checked online (I had been checking several times every day) and we had been moved to 1st seating! I couldn't believe it! We were super happy about the switch! We never received an email confirmation, had I not checked online, we wouldn't have known before hand. We were a family of 4.
