Swine Flu - General Discussion and how it affects Disney

we are going. while its a concern in the back of my mind, i am not goin to cancel my vacation because of this

Still going and leaving next Sunday :) Can't wait! It's our boys' first "surprise" trip and it's been nice not to hear them ask every hour "are we leaving tomorrow??" :)

we leave on Friday and while I would be lying if I said I wasn't worried, I see no reason to cancel our fun Disney trip because of it! I plan on just washing my hands and my sons hands very frequently! And I am bringing lots of Clorox wipes to wipe anything I can down, esp. the hotel room, high chairs in restaurants, etc! Best of health to everyone! :-)

We are going in 2 1/2 weeks, and we are not going to cancel. I live in Houston, TX, and I have more of a chance of getting it here, than I do in Flordia. I woke up this morning to hear a little 22 month old passed away from the swine flu in a hospital in Houston. He was from Mexico, and his parents brought him here for treatment. Several of my customers I work with on a daily basis are from Mexico, and go back all the time. I am starting to get a little nervous about catching it! I am not afraid at all of traveling, but if was going to fly, I would wear a surgical mask at all times.

3 weeks, 2 days to go for us. I can't wait, and I'm not planning on canceling at all. I'll keep my ear out, but I'm thinking within the next 3 weeks we're going to have a pretty good picture of where this thing is going.

We leave tomorrow and while we clearly aren't canceling, I'm planning on being a little more vigilant than normal. We already got a script for tamiflu for each family member so if heaven forbid someone gets sick, we can avoid a hospital trip. We've had Noro from Disney and realize that germs/viruses are everywhere all the time, but this is serious.

I know some people are insisting that the media is sensationalizing this, while that is the case to an extent, I also think there is a fair amount of under reporting of undiagnosed cases.

Nothing is going to stop us! Not even the media hype.

I had a "friend" contact me about it the other day. Someone I don't talk to all that much try to make sure I knew about it. I believe nothing would make this person more happy for me to not go.
Sad how some people are like that.

We leave on Saturday. It's in Michigan and Indiana so I think I'll be safer in Disney then at home cause at I'm home I'm surrounded by it!

I can't believe all of you are still planning on going?!?! especially any of you who plan to be there May 1-8. You should definitely cancel your trip.
In fact, as reported over on the Swine Flu thread, I read from an "insider" website that Disney will likely be cloing down for May 1-8. ;)

Please, for your own safety (and my desire for shorter lines) cancel your trip if you plan to be anywhere close to Orlando May 1-8.

We leave in 7 days! WooHoo! :woohoo:
No thoughts of cancelling, and as other posters said, I can get sick here too.
There is one confirmed mild case about 40 miles from us, soooo......
Anyway, think of it this way, you have more of a chance of getting killed or injured in a car accident ON Disney property (although I hope no one becomes another statistic on this one!)
There have been 3 vehicle related deaths in the last month alone in WDW.

Oh heck no!!! We are going and we're going to have a great time.

This Swine Flu crap is getting on my last nerve lol!! The media is freaking out over it AHHHH. Try not to worry about it too much. It's not worth it. You will have yourself so freaked out that in your head you will make yourself think you have it.

Remember the Sars and Anthrax scares around sept 11th, yeah well the media scared the crap out of me that I swore up and down that I had Sars. Months later I finally realized it was all in my head lol.

I just plan to do what I always always do. Use my hand sanitizer and wash my hands.

Keep your plans and have a great time in Disney. Just don't make your self sick over this.

Well said! I am already tired of hearing about it, the media is making a big deal about this. It just a different strain of the flu and yes it has killed people, but as another poster said, it is estimated that around 36,000 people die each year in the US from the flu.

Everyone just needs to treat this like flu season in the winter....just use common sense, wash your hands, cover your mouth when you cough and sneeze, etc.

Maybe one good thing will come out of all the excessive media coverage......people who don't practice the best hygene will be a little more aware and take precautions to slow the spread.

I will definitely be leaving on Saturday morning and enjoying my week at Disney with my family!!!

I was debating on posting this same exact thread. We leave next week and although it worries me, I do not plan to cancel the trip. I was wondering if anyone seriously did cancel due to this flu? We have confirmed cases in Michigan now, so it isn't like we don't have that chance of contracting it through the schools here. I am not downplaying this, actually I am the kind of person who panics, but I am putting it into perspective. They are calling this mild so far and we do lose 36,000 people every year to the normal flu. We have just as much chance of catching the regular flu if not more. I'm hoping for the best. Good health to all!!!!

We leave this Monday and I will say I am a bit nervous! We were in Disney this past December and all got the stomach flu even though we used the gels, etc. I just went to Target the other night and bought Lysol wipes and gels again. I plan on washing down the hotel room and hands contantly, but we are not cancelling! You can pick up anything from anywhere. Oh, I am also wiping down the seats on the airplane. Can you bring wipes on the plane?

We have 11 days until we leave for WDW. We are not going to cancel our trip. We will be doing a lot of hand washing and using lysol. Hopefully, we will have a great time. It's alot better than sitting home worrying about catching it.

ok I may be the only person that thinks this way but I just may move my trip (3 weeks) to another time...maybe..I just do not think it is worth the risk to my dd3...she is my world! With all the people from all over I am a little freaked and I would never forgive myself if she did get it...I have not canceled yet but I will not rule it out.I hate that the media is doing a 24/7 fear thing but I also do not want to stick my head in the sand either...I will see in a couple of weeks I guess:sad1:

These are lottery winner levels of infection here in the US. You basically have a better chance of being killed by a drunk driver or getting struck by lightning at this point. I would venture to guess that we all have a better chance of catching regular influenza than this.

All the people in Mexico who died probably did so because of the air quality there which is horrible. Plus the fact that Mexico city is 20 million in population,

36000 people die every year in the US from regular influenza. That s 100 a day! This whole topic in reality is blown way out of proportion. And remember the stress of worrying can lower your immune system so quit worrying!

By the way, my family and I will be there Saturday!

3 deaths ON Disney property in the last month alone due to vehicle accidents.
I'll take my chances on the flu and just keep washing our hands.

Notice my ticker!! :woohoo:

My DH and I are keeping a close watch...we have had no discussions of canceling. We are taking a wait and see approach. Hopefully they will have the results back from that one expected Case that was in WDW soon.

We're leaving for WDW on May 23rd - and "cancel" isn't in our vocabulary! Take precautions and practice good hand washing techniques & maintain personal hygeine. And have a great time!!
