Swine Flu - General Discussion and how it affects Disney

Sorry, I have no idea how to do a poll...
But anyone going in May considering canceling their trips due to the current state of the swine flu?

I am a little nervous, I have no health insurance DD and fiance do, but last time while at Disney DD did get sick. Nothing major but she really WAS NOT herself. SO what happened if (God Bless us) if one of us did get swine flu while there? What happens? You loose out on your whole trip?

SO many things going through my mind, if it happened I would want to come home but yet I wouldn't want ot infect those on the plane....ugh...

I just want to go on vacation and have a good time and NOT worry about these things I am so saddened and worried right now :sad2:
:cool1:no we are not canceling,we leave in 2 weeks.Hopefully the parks will be empty.:woohoo::woohoo:

I was also speculating a lot of media hype...

Fiance actually said if i wanted to cancel to do it, which is not like fiance AT ALL!

Just worried about DD getting it because I feel I could take proper precautions but it is hard for a 4 yr old to not touch their face and stuff

Also, last year DD did get sick and I wipe down EVERYTHING due to her peanut allergy, as peanut proteins may be lurking everywhere. When flying I had her sit on a beach towel and I wiped down the seat in front of us, arm rests, etc and she got sick 3 days after our flight....I am so bummed :(

Going Friday-- not going to cancel. We will be washing/sanitizing more than usual, and wiping down the room/airplane tray/restaurant tables with antibacterial wipes. In the meantime, I am making sure to give my kids their vitamins, healthy meals, and enough sleep so that their immune systems are in good shape.

I'd be lying if I said I'm not even a little bit worried, but at this point, I don't see a reason to cancel our trip.

We leave Friday too...not going to cancel. We are driving down. See you all in the parks! :thumbsup2

I wonder how long these people in mexico had this before death occurs. Now that its showing up here in the U.S., I would like to see if we are under the same timeline or passing it.

Would not dream of not going. Been planning too long. We will wash hands and hope for the best. My kids are older 11 and 8 and we will probably talk to them on the way down about avoiding putting their hands near their face.

JGAZDA - Looks like we will be at Kidani the same week :) There is nothing that will keep us from checking in on May 9th.

I know! I can't wait to check out the pool and water play area. Did you see the pictures? No way I'm letting the news scare me out of that.

We are leaving Monday 05/04. We have no plans to cancel at all. Nothing will stop this trip now. As a lot of folks already said, there is a lot of unnecessary hype by the media right now.

Not cancelling here! We leave on May 23rd and can't wait! I figure I'm a teacher so I probably have a pretty good immune system! :rotfl:

My DH and I will not be canceling as we could get swine flu or any flu just as easy here at home at the grocery store, school, etc.

Yep, totally agree and that's what I said on one of the other swine flu threads - I could cancel, stay home and pick up here. We'll be washing hands lots more and using Purell a lot more but cancelling hasn't even entered our minds!

Is anyone else bothered by the suggestion that if a person has a fever and cough they should head to the ER? :confused3 DH's insurance sucks and we're talking a deductible of $750 - $1500 (out of network - ie at WDW) + 20% - 40% coinsurance. The ER is not an option for our family.

Yeah, I have the same concern, even at home. DH is self-employed and our health insurance is a catastrpohic-only plan, so running to the ER for every fever would very quickly become disasterous, financially speaking. Even for the insured, I wonder... In the past when we've used the ER, our insurance had to approve the visit before they paid (and they fought us tooth & nail on covering a visit when DS had 16 stitches, even though we were sent to the ER by our family doc). I wonder how many people are going to follow the advice to go to the ER over flu symptoms only to have their insurance refuse to pay because the situation is deemed non-emergent.

I think the economic consequences of this are going to turn out to be far worse than the medical consequences in the long run.

I leave on Sunday and I admit to letting the media get to me a little  I called my sister who is a nurse AND a hypochondriac and she is still saying she would go with me if she could, so that made me feel much better. She said she wouldn't go to Cancun, but that's about it. I'm still watching, but unless something very drastically changes, I'm going!

On a side note, I was WAY annoyed at the news earlier today. BIG headline, FIRST US DEATH FROM SWINE FLU. Took 'em awhile to mention that the person lives in Mexico and was brought here for treatment.

I was debating on posting this same exact thread. We leave next week and although it worries me, I do not plan to cancel the trip. I was wondering if anyone seriously did cancel due to this flu? We have confirmed cases in Michigan now, so it isn't like we don't have that chance of contracting it through the schools here. I am not downplaying this, actually I am the kind of person who panics, but I am putting it into perspective. They are calling this mild so far and we do lose 36,000 people every year to the normal flu. We have just as much chance of catching the regular flu if not more. I'm hoping for the best. Good health to all!!!!

When I first read this, I thought it was my daughter-in-law. They live in Michigan and are leaving on Monday for WDW. Hopefully, they and your family will be fine!!!!! The best of health to all!!!!! :)

We are leaving in 2 weeks, nothing is going to stop us from going either. They would have to literally close wdw, for us not to go! I am going to wipe down everything with clorox wipes, take all necessary precautions. I am a little worried about dd touching her face and putting hands in her mouth, but I am going to be all over her with purell and hand washing. I don't think the cases in the US are alarming enough for me to stay home, it seems everyone who has come down with this, has been to Mexico. Or have been in contact with someone coming from Mexico.

I know! I can't wait to check out the pool and water play area. Did you see the pictures? No way I'm letting the news scare me out of that.

Yes I have seen all the pictures out there, and can't wait to see it for myself. I have a feeling if given the choice my boys would just hang out at the pool all week. It looks like the play area is sort of enclosed which makes it easier to keep up with three crazy boys....

I have a better chance of survival if we go to Disney b/c at this point if I cancelled by boys and DH would kill me, and there is no vaccine for that. :rotfl:

We are going! My husband had a bad cold 2 weeks ago and I manage to keep myself and our baby healthy by washing our hands, spraying Lysol in all areas and using antibacterial hand wash. I spoke to our pediatrician and this is exactly what he told us to do. I am also bringing a carrier for my DD, so, that she won't be riding exposed in her stroller all day while at Disney. He also gave us a couple of meds, in case she starts coming down with something. If we don't feel safe, then we are staying in our villa and skip the parks :headache: We are also renting a car, so, that we can avoid the buses on this trip (I love riding in those buses!). We will also be at AKV and are looking forward to trying out the Kidani pool on Saturday!

Leaving tomorrow!!:yay:

We will be there Saturday. We wouldn't even think about cancelling. I just don't see it as a reason to.
