Swine Flu - General Discussion and how it affects Disney

3 deaths ON Disney property in the last month alone due to vehicle accidents.
I'll take my chances on the flu and just keep washing our hands.

where and when and how?

Not sure if I believe this, you know how rumors spread most are lies.
Or if this would be Disney covering up bad news.

I dearly love Disney, but I will cancel if this gets worse. This virus may mutate and could become a real killer. Please don't say cancel is not in your voculabary. A week at Disney is the best, staying alive is better. We do not leave until May 23, I'm in wait and see mode. If my family might be in danger we will stay home. I know we all get tired of the news heads crying wolf, but we do need to keep a watchful eye and take action if necessary.
I saw one brain trust on CNN last night saying he could come and go to Mexico as often as he wanted and no one could stop him. Sort of made me wish his family would all catch the flu from him. Sometimes we just can't do everything we want.

I respect your opinion, Sammielynn. However, this virus is disseminated throughout the country already. I'm not saying this to cause any undue anxiety - it's just a fact. It's been established that the poor toddler who died in Texas was in fact, infected and in this country, for 2 weeks before he succumbed.
No matter where you are, you should be using preventative measures to avoid catching any communicable disease. You won't be safe simply by avoiding certain areas of the country or necessarily by avoiding crowds. We are all in danger of contracting any number of far more serious diseases every day. The best we can do is live our lives to the fullest and be prudent.
"Cancel" is STILL not in my vocabulary! That may change, of course - but it won't be because of unnecessary hysteria. (And I'm certainly NOT accusing you or anyone else on the boards of this - I blame the sensatiional nature of the newscasts!)
If you just consider the current guidelines listed by the CDC you can make an informed decision as to whether travel to WDW is right for you & your family. IMHO to even think of cancelling a long planned vacation - especially one that is fully paid - is quite premature at this juncture!

I know of 2 of these that are true. There was one person that ran into a bus near the Contemporary Water Bridge and died, and there was just another one recently at like 2am where someone died. I'm not sure about the 3rd.

I wonder how long these people in mexico had this before death occurs. Now that its showing up here in the U.S., I would like to see if we are under the same timeline or passing it.

The so-called "Patient Zero" in Mexico was sick late March/early April (and fully recovered by the way).

The latest info I've heard is that the incubation period is less than 7 days. And the info from pp re: the "ground zero" patient is right on.... The problem now is to determine how the virus made the jump from animal to human host.

Ok, you're confused. It would be the military enforcing martial law. I'd like to see you go out there and try to place one of the military under "citizen's arrest". I'm not making this up, really. Look it up.

Now, I believe we're a long way from something this drastic..I was merely pointing out that it's a possibility.. A very very small one, but possible.

As far as the shot, I don't think they can force you to get it..But, first off, why on earth wouldn't you want it? Secondly, while they might not force you to get a shot, they most certainly can enforce a quarantine..Again, this is all info you can look up, should you want to educate yourself.

Be that as it may,,,is military "GOD" himself? I also cant see it happening as the USA would go belly-up (broke) as I said before if businesses were forced to stay closed till furture notice. The feds wouldnt want that...
I could also see Disney handing out surgical masks at the gates and telling patrons they must wear them,,,..Wont happen...

I'm usually a total hypochondriac and both my bf and I have asthma, but I'm trying being cautiously optimistic about these events. We leave on the 18th and as long as we aren't ill and this hasn't made a huge turn for the worse, then we will stay the course. The only worry I have is that my seasonal allergies (so bad right now ) and hideous coughing will freak out my fellow airline passengers since most people seem to be in freak out mode right now. I just got the third degree in class from some know it all that I shouldn't be there since OMG a dry allergy cough that i've had since the start of pollen season and mild sneezing into tissues is totally the same thing as swine flu and i must have it.

Yeah, I have the same concern, even at home. DH is self-employed and our health insurance is a catastrpohic-only plan, so running to the ER for every fever would very quickly become disasterous, financially speaking. Even for the insured, I wonder... In the past when we've used the ER, our insurance had to approve the visit before they paid (and they fought us tooth & nail on covering a visit when DS had 16 stitches, even though we were sent to the ER by our family doc). I wonder how many people are going to follow the advice to go to the ER over flu symptoms only to have their insurance refuse to pay because the situation is deemed non-emergent.

I think the economic consequences of this are going to turn out to be far worse than the medical consequences in the long run.

For the past few days, my DS3 has had a fever and coughs. I normally wouldn't take him in to the doctor for something like that (I don't believe in overmedicating kids), but with this swine flu scare, and the fact that we live in (gasp!) Texas, I took him to see his ped. yesterday. They had some precautions they took, like keeping him separate from the other kids waiting. It turned out just to be a sinus infection. The doctor said that with the kids who have the swine flu, there is no mistaking it. They are just miserable. So you don't need to feel panic and rush to the ER if you are just having minor flu symptoms, if you have it, you will KNOW. According to my son's ped. anyway.

Foxnews is "speculating" that the WHO is going to raise the level
from 4 to 5. Apparently, they are holding a news conference shortly.

We'll see.

If you listened to any of the pressers, though, you'd realize that the WHO level is now meaningless to the USA since the virus is already here. The level 5 is an indicator to other countries that they now need to be extra-prepared because there is human-to-human transmission in 2 different regions in the world. I'm guessing this move was made because of the new cases found in Germany and other places in Europe.

It has no bearing on the severity of the actual strain.

One of the stories I read on Cnn.com yesterday had experts talking about masks. They said masks are only useful for stopping the spread of the flu if an infected person is wearing one. It won't keep you from getting the flu if you aren't already infected and are wearing one.

Not for me, because my family is driving down but my older sister and her youngest are meeting us there in the middle of the week and they're flying. I work here at the University of Maryland and I'm surrounded by labs so I picked up two for them for their flight. My sister has Lupus so her immune system is already weak, and I do not want my sister catching ANYTHING that will put a damper on any of our vacation. My sister + ANY illness = NOT A MAGICAL VACATION!

Ditto! It is far more likely you'll be hit by a car crossing the street the day before you leave for your vacation.
