Swine Flu - General Discussion and how it affects Disney

Is anyone else bothered by the suggestion that if a person has a fever and cough they should head to the ER? :confused3 DH's insurance sucks and we're talking a deductible of $750 - $1500 (out of network - ie at WDW) + 20% - 40% coinsurance. The ER is not an option for our family.

We leave in 15 days, and this is putting a damper on our vacation that has been in the planning stages for 6 years! Hoping this goes away soon!

we also leave in 15 days and I don't know if we should cancel our trip or not :sad2:

Sorry, I have no idea how to do a poll...
But anyone going in May considering canceling their trips due to the current state of the swine flu?

I am a little nervous, I have no health insurance DD and fiance do, but last time while at Disney DD did get sick. Nothing major but she really WAS NOT herself. SO what happened if (God Bless us) if one of us did get swine flu while there? What happens? You loose out on your whole trip?

SO many things going through my mind, if it happened I would want to come home but yet I wouldn't want ot infect those on the plane....ugh...

I just want to go on vacation and have a good time and NOT worry about these things I am so saddened and worried right now :sad2:

My DH and I will not be canceling as we could get swine flu or any flu just as easy here at home at the grocery store, school, etc.

We leave in 10 days and there is no way we are cancelling. I have stocked up on hand sanitizer, clorax wipes to wipe down the room when we get there, and we will try and keep our kids from putting their hands in their mouth and around their faces.

I think the media is hyping this whole thing way too much (look at all the threads on here with the conflicting info), if you get sick while at Disney you may not even get symptoms until you get home, though I have heard different reports the CDC is saying the incubation period is 4-7 days. Do what is best for you and your family, and take precautions to keep yourself from getting sick.

We're still going! Hopefully things will be better or no worse by then. Who knows what the next two weeks will bring. Either way, I'm probably safer there then at home working in a medical/respiratory/sepsis ICU!

To those of you planning on soaking your hotel rooms in Lysol, PLEASE DON'T. Sanitation is good, but extreme sanitation is really harmful to some. Have a little consideration for those of us arriving after you, who may have health problems aggravated by walking into a noxious cloud of cleaning products. Honestly, right now, I'm not overly concerned about the flu itself, and my trip is in 27 days. I'm terrified of what I'm going to encounter when I first walk into my hotel room.
These are lottery winner levels of infection here in the US. You basically have a betterr chance of being killed by a drunk driver or getting struck by lightning at this point. I would venture to guess that we all have a better chance of catching regular influenza than this.

All the people in Mexico who died probably did so because of the air quality there which is horrible. Plus the fact that Mexico city is 20 million in population,

36000 people die every year in the US from regular influenza. That s 100 a day! This whole topic in reality is blown way out of proportion. And remember the stress of worrying can lower your immune system so quit worrying!

By the way, my family and I will be there Saturday!
During week 12 (March 22-28, 2009), influenza activity continued to decrease in the United States.

Seven hundred twenty-two (16.8%) specimens tested by U.S. World Health Organization (WHO) and National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (NREVSS) collaborating laboratories and reported to CDC/Influenza Division were positive for influenza.

If you check out the CDC web site and look at the regular influenza page, it says how many cases they have been every week, and also how many each season. As you can see above - in just one week in March, there were 722 cases (again, this is regular flu, not Swine flu) - just to put it all into perspective. Yes, this could turn into something worse, but please don't panic - just be prepared.

:worship: Easily the best 2 posts on this thread. They bear repeating, many times over.

I was debating on posting this same exact thread. We leave next week and although it worries me, I do not plan to cancel the trip. I was wondering if anyone seriously did cancel due to this flu? We have confirmed cases in Michigan now, so it isn't like we don't have that chance of contracting it through the schools here. I am not downplaying this, actually I am the kind of person who panics, but I am putting it into perspective. They are calling this mild so far and we do lose 36,000 people every year to the normal flu. We have just as much chance of catching the regular flu if not more. I'm hoping for the best. Good health to all!!!!

Considering there are only 7 deaths worldwide from this, I'd say our chances are good. We are still going May 11-18.

From the WHO http://www.who.int/csr/don/2009_04_28/en/index.html

Swine influenza - update 4
28 April 2009--The situation continues to evolve rapidly. As of 19:15 GMT, 28 April 2009, seven countries have officially reported cases of swine influenza A/H1N1 infection. The United States Government has reported 64 laboratory confirmed human cases, with no deaths. Mexico has reported 26 confirmed human cases of infection including seven deaths.

The following countries have reported laboratory confirmed cases with no deaths - Canada (6), New Zealand (3), the United Kingdom (2), Israel (2) and Spain (2).

Further information on the situation will be available on the WHO website on a regular basis.

WHO advises no restriction of regular travel or closure of borders. It is considered prudent for people who are ill to delay international travel and for people developing symptoms following international travel to seek medical attention, in line with guidance from national authorities.

There is also no risk of infection from this virus from consumption of well-cooked pork and pork products. Individuals are advised to wash hands thoroughly with soap and water on a regular basis and should seek medical attention if they develop any symptoms of influenza-like illness.

Definitely not canceling. Personally I think this is a lot of media hype.

Oh heck no!!! We are going and we're going to have a great time.

This Swine Flu crap is getting on my last nerve lol!! The media is freaking out over it AHHHH. Try not to worry about it too much. It's not worth it. You will have yourself so freaked out that in your head you will make yourself think you have it.

Remember the Sars and Anthrax scares around sept 11th, yeah well the media scared the crap out of me that I swore up and down that I had Sars. Months later I finally realized it was all in my head lol.

I just plan to do what I always always do. Use my hand sanitizer and wash my hands.

Keep your plans and have a great time in Disney. Just don't make your self sick over this.

Check out our ticker - with 4 days to go we're not even entertaining the thought of cancelling. Like a PP said, we could contract the disease just as easily here at home in Maryland, while visiting the grocery store or the local Red Robin. We're already the kinda of family to keep up with our hand washing and hand sanitizers, Lysol and Clorox wiping down of everything that isn't nailed down. So we'll just step it up a bit more, but us cancel?

NO WAY JOSE!

T.

Nope. We leave next Fri. and have no plans to cancel. I'm concerned about the flu, but I have other, more likely, things to worry about that can kill me. I have a deathly allergy to yellow jacket stings and they are stirring now so every time I walk out into my own yard I could potentially die. Puts in in perspective for me. I figure I have less chance of getting swine flu than dropping dead in my own yard. At least w/swine flu I can wash my hands and not touch my face, etc. There's some element of control of my destiny. Insects are a lot more random and there's less I can do, esp. since yellow jackets build in the ground and I can't even see the nest to avoid it. I just take precautions when I can, spray what I can see, and the rest is out of my control.

My only other choice, in either case, is to stay inside and live in fear, which I refuse to do. Sure, I could go to WDW and get sick, but I could also go out to mow the lawn and drop dead. It will be what it will be and I'm not going to hide from life. I'll just take the precautions available to me, act sensibly and hope for the best. But I refuse to hide in my house. There's always something out there that may kill me or make me sick and I'm not going to miss out on life because of it.
